Sorry to be a party pooper Mr Seller but it doesn’t matter a jot if the engines are in ‘perfect condition’ without corrosion without any recent paperwork from an authorised Merlin engine rebuilder no one would be allowed to install them into an aircraft to fly. The CAA will simply not approve of an Merlin engine thats been in a crate for ? number of years to be used (even the military would be to less than keen to use an unkown engine). As an overhaul is in the region of £80-100k it does knock some of the percieved “value” of unkown quantity engines down. A friend of mine recently obtained an imaculate 224, still in a Packard crate for a fraction of that price.
It’ll be worth what someones prepared to pay but a £50k start for an engine to sit in your hall or garage is some ornament!

The ‘Welsh’ 2 seater apears not to get out much but thats only because its not seen down south very much. When applying for airshows the organisers take into account transit costs. When they have several well known Spitfires based at Duxford and now North Weald to choose from why bother with something based in the hills? Indeed one show organiser simply said “dont bother applying old boy, we get all our Spitfires from Duxford you know” – as it was he still had PT462, via Duxford and therefore at a greater cost. Was expecting a request for a flypast or two with Carolyn similar to the P51’s but there was no follow up from the display team – you’d have had a least 2 then!
I must comment that for a first time (major) show it was a super effort, indeed many established shows could have learned a lesson or 2 from Walney. Everyone involved on the organising side was helpful and enthuseastic – I didnt encounter a single jobsworth all day. There were a few hiccups but nothing serious, fab display venue and I believe that proveded all parties involved, sponsers, council, airfield management, etc a plan for a bi annual event will be set up.

They dont want anything listed as it detracts heavily from the asking price – sod history, how much will it make!
West Raynham is not the only site that the MoD cannot seem to quite get around to with regard to having buildings listed.

When asked about the non appearence of the 2 seat spitfires over the years at Legends the answer was “they are not seen as proper Spitfires…..”. I find this strange as during their single seat wartime careers they all saw combat so I feel that more than qualifies them for a slot – there were more than a couple of aircraft flying about with NO combat history but thats ok apparently.
Furthermore when asked about a formation slot for the four 2 seaters currently available at ANY Duxford show I was told that “there would be no public intrest for such an event…….”
Having said that Im sure they’ll want all 4 at the Sept show even if they wont have them flying as a “four” – we’ll have to see.

He left a tremendous legacy, however all to many of his airframes are now in the US. I was fortunate enough to be in one of his that returned to the UK a while ago today – many thanks for a tremendous restoration at a time when he was a leader in the rebuilding of Spitfires in the UK.
    RIP

NavEx – the cream teas were fabulous, they insisted I have at least 3 as everyone else at Sealand seemed to have eaten that many.

I felt sorry for the guys with the fuel bowser as they rushed up all expectant that at last they could perform some refuelling only to be told that we were ok! With a look of utter dispair they turned and slowly walked back to the bowser.

Any sign of the pics from BCSL chaps, you did have my good side.

Errrrrrr aviation – sensible labour rates???

HFL were advertising their aircraft at £1.3m, the only one which has sold recently was the Mk9 to the chap in Canada with the Disney millions (name has just escaped me) but I doubt he paid more than £1m. The others, nice as they are are still at HFL and have been for some time. The Mk16 (fab), 18 (Griffon) and 14 (Griffon) are all great aircraft but they dont capture the imagination as much as say a Mk5 or even a 9.
The 5 that is currently under restoration will I believe fetch a very good price and will be snapped up.

Engine rebuilds depend very much on type and number of replacement bits, in most cases budget for £100k (and keep your fingers crossed). US rebuilds Ive heard tend to be cheaper (say $120k) but do you get the quality of a MH or Retro job?

What an attractive Chipmunk that silver one is, flown superbly I heard! Not sure why that red one keeps appearing all the time!
Anyway – the Chipmunk duo – stars of the NW end of the Moth Rally.
ps I did my best to eat thru all the spare food!

With what I remember of some of his posts re his flying exploits I wonder what the U.S.A will make of him. I hope he’s matured as a person and if so all the best to him – I still wonder – does he really exist?
