Lets remember that pilots are human beings and not keep putting them on a pedestal and treating them like gods, they pay the ultimate price in the short term if it goes wrong, but also remember that in the longer term we all pay the price as it has been pointed out, insurance rises, gate prices rise and probably even worse the media hysteria goes into the “these old planes should’nt be flying mode”.
I woner how the meeting went at Duxford today with the local villagers, any one know?.

[B]I too have seen too many crashes, just like to ask for a factual answer please,no hysterics just facts,Of the highly publiicised crashes,p38,mossie,buchon,p63 ,firefly,Rolls royce Spit at Woodford etc,if the aircraft had been 500 to 1000 feet higher how many of them would have had a chance to recover or at worst turn a fatal crash into a pancake with survivors?
buchon
Which Buchon crash are you referring to here?
Yes i was,it was a publicised incident,i have no idea of the cause of the crash as i have never seen a report about the incident,if you have perhaps you can enlighten us.I was trying to get across the fact that there have been many crashes involving different planes and for different reasons.
I appreciate that very little can be done with mechanical failure and even misjudgements on landing but i do wonder about some of the manouvres where the planes seem to be too slow and too low,all i asked was if anyone had studied the incidents and whether had the planes been higher they would’ve stood a more fighting chance of recovery.
I was not picking on the Buchon at all,i had a memory of these aircraft that over the years i had seen display and we have since sadly lost.
Somewhere down the line someone will have to look into these incidents before someone who could’nt care less about vintage flying gets into power and decides enough is enough.
Instead of criticsing me what would YOU do to ensure the planes stay where they should be,up in the air.
Don’t forget that we are in a minority, the average person on the streets could’nt care less whether they fly or not.

In the past fifteen years more warbird/historic aircraft have been destroyed on the ground in hangar and/or museum fires. If this is your preffered destination for these machines (which will be the result if severe restrictions are placed on their operation), then we must expect far fewer of them to be around in fifty years time than if we continue the current healthy discovery, recovery, restoration and aerial display scenario that most of us enjoy.Take a moment to consider why these privately owned aeroplanes have so much money spent on them.
What fires in the UK?,how many have been lost then:confused: It’s also nice to see Rob Ant taking this discussion seriously with sarcasm.
Whatever we all think it may go out of our hands in the future anyway,on ceefax this morning the local villagers around Duxford are supposed to be meeting up with Duxford P163 on bbc east ceefax, i daresay if they shout long enough and loud enough against the flying some sort of comprimise will have to be reached.
🙂 ive sent you e mail,cheers:)

I wonder if the aircraft could be allowed to do Aeros but bottoming out at a higher altitude to allow for any unforseen problems, i wonder if anyone could analize the hieghts and speeds of each and just see if there is a buffer zone of survival, cheers 🙂
trumper,
Robin has an ad on P33 of the November FlyPast, or try his website at http://www.robin-smith-aviation-art.co.uk
Geoff.
🙂 Thanks all,it was definately him ,i recognise the flypast picture [his painting, not the magazine]with the Hurricane in it.
He told me it did’nt have a Hurricane in it originally but it was a welcome addition:D
A very nice man to talk to,im envious of anyone with the abilities to make something look so nice from a flat bit of paper/canvas and some marks and colours:D
Cheers:D
🙂 I love aviation art, alas ,children and lack of space curtailed my collecting, keep the information links with artists coming very intersting stuff.
I had a lovely chat with a smashing artist at the flying legends this year,i could’ve sworn his name was Robin Smith but possibly not.
If anyone has a copy of the F/Legends programme and if it lists the trade stands he was on the hangar side of the main walkway.
Many thanks 😀

I did get billed by DHL over a DVD delivery from Amazon.ca, which I ignored. They then started sending letters threatening action over my overdue account, so I finally paid up the VAT and customs duty elements of the invoice (having checked th amounts against the declared value of Amazon’s invoice first, I may add). In fact, these are legitimate charges if I am importing goods into the UK, as in this case. I did, however, tell them where to stick their £10 ‘Administration Charge’, and have heard nothing since
Can you remember how much that was in comparison to the cost of the dvd?,was it a percentage of the cost of the dvd or a set amount.
If the dvd had been available in the UK would it have been comparable still in price, many thanks:)
😀 just watched the R Mears Heroes of Telemark,my hat goes off to them,as well as all those that served, amazing achievements and people:)

I can’t remember who raised the point about why the BBMF won’t fly with non BBMF aircraft but whoever it was absolutely hit the nail on the head, in fact the BBMF actually publicly stated a few years ago that the decision was made because they are not sure of the quality of the pilots they would be flying alongside. I seem to remember the Lancaster flying into North Weald at the old Fighter meet with BF 109’S Black 6 on one wing and Black 2 operated by O F M C on the other,i’m certain i had it on video i took there but i’m trawling through them to find it,maybe someone else has some pictures of them, cheers:)

I wouldn’t give up on it coming out on region 2 DVD. There’s a series called ‘The High Life’ that was shown ages ago that we’ve been waiting years for on either video or DVD, and it’s finally been released on both! (Anyone ever see that one? Very funny series) So PoC may yet get it’s chance.
Is the high life the one about the scottish airway, air scotia with a daft english pilot and Shona Spyrtle [or something] and the 2 camp air stewards,i thought that was very good:D
🙂 Does anyone know if P o Cake is coming out in region 2 dvd at anytime,i thought it was fantastic:D
IF you haven’t got Hurricanes you can’t have Hurricanes, end of story:D
I spoke to one of the Panton brothers last year during a visit for the engine run ups and he said that it would’nt take too much to get her airworthy but they were not in any hurry to do it.
As he pointed out ,god forbid, it crashed ,what would their memorial/museum be without a live taxying Lancaster.I would love to see it fly BUT i would be happier if they could get hold of another taxying airframe first,i doubt that that would happen though.
How about concentrating on getting MORE airframes from museums into a taxying conditiion,at least we may get some rarer airframes “live”,sounds and sights to behold,Me 110’s ,He 111,Halifax,there are so many dead airframes tucked up in museums.
If they had open days at these museums where they ground ran the engines and taxied them several times a year ,well i would pay to see them:)
