Canada to withdraw from F-35 programme

    https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/canada-F35

Justin Trudeau, the newly elected prime minister, follows through on his pledge to cancel the country’s planned 65-plane purchase, Canada becomes the first country to reject the fifth-generation fighter — and the first industrial partner to withdraw participation in the program.

Such a move would reverberate across the globe, with all remaining partners forced to pay higher prices for F-35s.

For Canada’s supply base, the stakes are high. Many Canadian companies have spent years building components for the new plane and stand to lose as much as CDN$11 billion (US $8.3 billion) in work over the life of the jet.

On the other hand, the new Liberal government argues that an open competition for Canada’s fighter-jet replacement would more than make up for the loss of the F-35 business.

    Impact to F-35 Partners

In 2010, Canada committed to buying 65 F-35s on a sole-source basis as the replacement for its fleet of CF-18s. Two years later, then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper paused that purchase amid accusations that his government had lied about the true cost of the fighter program.

The F-35’s future in Canada has been called into question since Trudeau’s sweeping victory in the Oct. 19 election.

Trudeau has promised to pull out of the F-35 program and to move quickly on replacing Canada’s aging CF-18s with another plane through a competition. He has said that Canada does not need a stealth fighter for its defense needs and that the F-35 is too expensive.

In Washington last week, US Lt. Gen. Christopher C. Bogdan, F-35 Joint Program Office chief, said the remaining international partners can blame Canada for a $1 million price increase per jet if Ottawa scraps its 65-plane buy.

    What’s next for Canada?

Canada’s decision to drop the F-35 was mixed with politics, as the cost for the fifth-generation fighter had dogged Harper’s government. But Trudeau has positioned the argument as one of necessity, emphasizing that Canada should focus more on homeland defense than power projection with its new fighter buy.

Richard Aboulafia, an analyst with the Teal Group, points to Trudeau signalling he’ll withdraw Canada from military operations against the Islamic State group as proof that the new government is focusing inward, rather than outward, with its security decisions.

“It was form fitting function — it’s not about if it’s a good fighter, but, rather, if this is a role Canada should have,” Aboulafia said. “The F-35 is the perfect plane if Canada is going to be part of coalition warfare. If they just want something that provides air protection for sovereignty, something else fits just fine.”

Gene Colabatistto, group president for defence and security at CAE, the largest Canadian-owned defense company, agrees that the primary mission set Canada needs to fulfill is the sovereignty mission.

The question now becomes what jet will fill that mission.

Trudeau has previously suggested that the F-35 would not be considered in any competition, but even if it were invited back in, it seems an unlikely winner. Any new competition immediately becomes a plum prize for jet producers, as there are few large-scale fighter procurements expected in the next few years.

That is the biggest mambojambo i’ve read in a long Time.
does not make Democrates more Israel friendly..

Its “mambojambo” because your reading comprehension is lacking. Who said the democrats are more friendly? maybe you need to take more reading class

Just because Republicans has their crazy tea-party Cristiano’s on their side,

    I know. I just don’t get it.

most Jews are democrat and they make up a large number of that party. if Bernie becomes president, he’ll obviously be pro-Israel because he’s Jewish.
most republicans are christian, they want to prevent the end of the world so they feel they need to protect israel.

thus both parties are pro israel.

Is a little cute nice bird…but is a demonstrator o a prototype? Its intakes seems to be very small, probably supercruiser is not a goal?

Paint it yellow and I would call it Tweety.

its a demonstrator the size of a gripen, thus the small, seemingly fixed? intakes.
the engine is significantly higher up, you can see if you follow the red line, the bottom of the engine and fan blades begin at the top of the intakes. perhaps if it was enlarged, some of the blades might be exposed.

I give the Japanese credit for producing their own aesa and putting their own engine in.
unlike some jets where fanboys say its the greatest thing that will be produced, but still relying on imported engines and paper radars for the foreseeable future.

I have read of the J-6 being used in the Indo-Pak war, Iran Iraq war and Ogden war as a CAS platform, but that seems very unlikely since the J-6 was a pure interceptor
it was armed with 2-3 cannons and 2 IR homing A2A missiles perfect for a low tech interceptor for third world countries
but in the A2G role it is woefully underequipped with only 2 hardpoints carrying a total of 1100 lb only ! why on earth even the most low tech airforces use it in the CAS role ?
or am I missing something ? did it have other hardpoints in the CAS role to carry other weapons ?
I have seen some PAF versions with small rocket pods inboard to the tanks on each wings , even with this plus lets say just 2 x 550lb bombs its still a poor platform

fighter jets, when they get obsolete, degrade and pick up more ground attack duties. Look at the all sorts of Mirages, F-4, F-16, etc
CAS has higher attrition rates, easier to use something already on the way out.

thats pretty cool, I found this picture of how a PAF J-10 would look like. the quality of the cg is awful but I think the colors are right. It will probably take time as China will need to downgrade and make a “monkey” model for PAF to prevent the US from learning the best tech.

I remember when the first j-20 images came out, all the Russian fanboys were screaming “no bays”
    years later
    http://defense-update.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/j20_armed-e1364337514174.jpg
the J-20 is proven to have functional bays and is entering mass production.

the pak-fa on the other hand, main bays never opened (maybe can’t get it working right since they riskily chose a tandem bay configeration instead of a proven side-by side bay with s-ducts).. and no one knows what those pods are which some people still believe are supposed to be smaller bays lol

Russian engines.. soon to be replaced by..Russian su-35 engines.

China can sell the jf-17 to Iran directly. it doesn’t need Pakistan’s permission as it’s not their design and there’s little they can do about it. China is rapidly expanding links to Iran as we speak and they sold jets to Iran in the past.
With the Russian economy in doubt, military spending decreasing, and Chinese production of domestic engines, it’d be wiser for Iran to buy J-10s and J-31s instead.

Iran and Russia are becoming best buddies.
Russia is showing more and more alliance with Shiites. This is obvious because Sunni leader, Saudi Arabia is growing more anti Russia because of this.

also Chinese domestic engines are so good, they have to buy entire Su-35s just to “borrow” the engines for their J-20s

So – sorry to say so – sit down again and do Your homework at first before posting such a BS.

No twin engined plane has DSI. JF-17 and F-35 are single engined planes that have DSI.

JF-17 is excellent, has DSI. Gripen don’t have DSI.

hmm, but then Flanker and Pak-fa also doesn’t have DSI..what are you trying to say?

Chinese forums have been buzzing with rumors that two engines — the medium thrust ws-13 (J-31, FC-1) and the light thrust ws-17(first I heard of the designation) for the L-15 — are entering full production.

don’t worry too much about it as Pakistan can’t afford it.
instead check out this thing about carver and tejas. admittedly the CG is pretty awful, but its worth a read
