That isn’t what the English version says,
‘Studying the possibility’ =/ a done deal.
There’s also the question of what sort of access Russia has asked for. I think it unlikely in the extreme that Russia would have asked for permission to conduct combat missions out of the base, & even more unlikely that such permission would be granted. There’s the little matter of EU membership, & the Common Security and Defence Policy.
The article also says
permission to conduct combat missions?. Cyprus is going to use politically acceptable language in begining.
If Russian settled in airbase they will use it with full autonomy and Cyprus can do nothing about it. Cyprus realizes only Russia can provide economics and military protection.
The USSR broke up in 1991. Now Russia is back. Besides, Saddam was a Sunni who was put into power in Iraq by America to take on Shi’ite Iran.
I highly doubt Saddam was put by America as he was part of baath party. but he got money from persian gulfs arabs. so his policies were influenced by them.
The same thing happened to Egypt decades ago when Egypt was allied with Soviet Union. but millions of Egyptians got jobs in Saudi and Saudis spent billions to islamize that society. so that alliance break apart.
You compare apples with steaks.
a) In 1991, Russia was in ruins. Nobody knew if it would even break further apart. Today things are… well, slightly different.
b) Russia never disagreed with Desert Storm, or the consequent no fly zone In fact, Russia had voted in favor of all UN resolutions against Iraq. Today Russia does disagree, not because they admire Assad or love the Syrian people, but because of interests.
In 1991 it was failed leadership of Gorbi that failed to capitalize on crises. Russia with right leader at that time could have encouraged Syria/Iran to back Iraq against Saudi. this would have prolonged the conflict with all the associated benefits of higher oil prices & money printing for war effort.
Even if tomorrow they back down and allow Assad’s overthrown, it will be because they will have gotten something else in return, either in Syria itself or somewhere else. Has been happening in international diplomacy between superpowers for centuries.
I dont see there is anything left for bargaining with west. Russia primariy goal is higher energy prices which only can be ensured by instability in Middleast.
Yeah, thx for proving my point. The Su-35S have added capabilities over Su-27SM, thus increase in weight.
i only mentioned that poorly designed planes gains weight with added capabilities. Su-35 is not part of that group. It will always have 2 tons extra fuel over baseline Flanker in air and still maintain higher TWR. so its weight cannot be more than Su-27SM.
We been through this a Gazillion times allready.. 🙁
Jet fighters do not get lighter by the years of service, but rather heavier, just like millitary aviation history has shown us.
What i would kill for to know, is exactly how large the Su-35S central fuel tanks are on NTOW. Its a given they are larger than the Su-27SKM Version due to several reasons.
On Su-27SM, it is approx 5600-5700kg of fuel upon take-off.
Only poorly designed fighters are getting heavier when more capabilities are added. 8800kg is alot of non-afterburnig thrust when you consider EJ200 is 6100kg. 44% difference in non-afterburning thrust.

what do you know about maintaince of latest Flankers?. Not the Flankers licensed 15 years ago to China.
In past 30 years what kind of BVR missiles India M2K carried and what HOBS missile with HMS sight?. what about consistent training in air to air combat. how about external jammer, IRST and electronic scanning radar.
M2K is thoroughly outdated platform with obsolete engine. it wont have any accleration under external loads. It is too short range for strike. There are too many crashes of M2k despite being small fleet. Su-30MKI fleet is closing on 180. and 272 figure is going to reach around 2017. Just look at Irkut annual revenues.
According to Knaapo the fueled weight is 24’600kg (2xR77 + pylons set to 400kg, 2xR73 +pylons set to 300kg), normal fuel is up to 8’000 kg so we end up at 16’600kg or more. According to http://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/su-35/ the weight is 18’400. The first number is depending on typical internal fuel.
I might be wrong, but if Pak Fa weighs in at some 16’500 kg it is fenomenal (and its not unlikely if the Su35 actually weighs 16,6 or so). Suddenly the 15,5 tonne figure doesnt feel like an impossibility, even though I will remain skeptic untill I get solid information from Knaapo or Sukhoi.
If Su-35 is heaver than 16.5 ton class. it wont have 3600km range on internal fuel. that figure is not easy to achieve with too heavy fighter & powerfull engines.
11 ton MIG-35 has 2000km range on internal fuel of about 5 tons. F-18E has 2390km range on 6.5 tons fuel. (about 15 ton fighter).
I think 15.5 tonnes is a bit low. It should be pretty close to the Flanker series. Maybe a little bit lighter. But 15’500 kg? Whats the user/source?
why would 15.5 tons low?. Su-35 is around 16 to 16.5 tons. (otherwise it wont have substantially different TWR than legacy Flankers considering its fuel capacity). This higher TWR is from Paris airshow.Su-35 plane is taller and bigger.
Su-30MKI suppose to lift heavy jamming pod. and Its radar is long range electronic scanning with higher top speed for platform. 1 or 8 JF-17 dont matter if they are from same airbase and in same area. FC-1/Rafale/J-10 need external fuel tanks so far easy to detect.
Even the Syrians admit that Israeli aircraft violated their airspace during the bombing raids.
During 2007 the Israeli Air Force were deep inside Syrian airspace to bomb the building at Dair Alzour.

From Syrian Government letter to the UN.
No EA-6B Prowlers were lost in combat during 1991. You are probably confused by A-6 Intruder combat losses during 1991 in Iraq?

Your link says fighters fly low to be un detected. since the close distance between two countries it is far easy to get undetected unless already notified.
US has rule out military solution. Arabs will be disappointed.
Hypocrite much?
so you believe that top speed PAK-FA is limited to Mach 2. Mach 2 will be its supercruising speed. There is no point in developing another engine for that. Not every statement is to be believed especially some thing from 2004 when Russia was short of money and looking for partners. This is 2013 and each invididual prototype will have alot of improvements in material. Those days of limited capability plane is over.
Whilst serching around for PAK-FA info I came across this which entirely supports what i’ve been saying all along – that Mig-31’s rarely race round at Mach 2+ but instead cruise in subsonic mode for the vast majority of the time.
12.2004
“Mikhailov said that the mach number has reduced with 0.15 “M”, set in the tactical and technical characteristics of the job rate of the new aircraft. “
“For example, given a description of 2.15 m, so that the aircraft was flying at such a rate, but the number – 0.15 leads to the need to strengthen the tail/stab, and increased weight of the aircraft,” – said the commander in chief.
According to him, “the analysis of aircraft such as the Su-27 and MiG-31 shows that the aircraft, though able to fly at around at these speeds, but they rarely do.”
“Only a few test pilots flying at such speeds, it involves hundreds of problematic issues to strengthen the tail and has a bad effect on the other characteristics of the aircraft,” – said Mikhailov.”
This is most likely disinformation. No one upgrade aircraft unless there is big difference in performance. and especially anything regarding future aircraft.
Says former VVS Fuhrer. 🙂 We have been through this, look it up.
Public statements are most likely disinformation just like that press release was about rcs from India side.
Not all bases are under seige and airforce is more consolidated. There not much defection left. as i said this airforce will operate. They could be replace by Russian or Iranain technicians/Pilots if there is shortage of qualified staff.
The large-scale protests in Brazil of late don’t bode well for a timely resolution of FX-2, and indeed lend retrospective credence to excuses offered for previous delays.
Time for FAB to start shopping around for second-hand M2Ks?
This protest could also impact KC-390 numbers and this thing will end up being more costly for export customers.
