Without doubt the worst airport I have ever had the misfortune of going through on a Sat afternoon. Make sure you’re their early (not really an issue if its a package holiday), and get airside – you may find yourselves stood behind 2 flights of Russians awaiting visa’s to be stamped after your check-in in the shed, and have spend half an hour in the security que!

You’ll certainly be in for a laugh, although limited views can be obtained from the airside windows.

Hi, does anyone know why Jet2 sent Boeing 757 G-LSAD down to jersey today from Manchester as LS6555? Also why G-CELR went down to Jersey from EDI as LS049P. I wasnt aware Jersey could handle B757’s????

G-CELR routed EDI-GLA (posn), GLA-JER (Loaded), JER-EDI (posn) – not a direct posn to JER.

    G-LSAD routed MAN-JER (loaded), JER-MAN (Posn).

    Both as mentioned ad-hoc charters.

    Hi Gareth,

CIA I would say isn’t too differant securitywise. Fair variety of mainly lo-co traffic, but it’s also worth bearing in mind it is a join mil base which has quite a lot of Goverment movements. Might be an idea to drop Wannabe Pilot a e-mail as I’m pretty sure he was there recently.

As soon as an incident is declared at an airfield, Eurocontrol will issue a Zero-Rate slot application, basically meaning that any aircraft waiting to depart to, in this case Gatwick, will have their flightplan suspended until further notice, and therefore that are unable to depart for LGW. You would have two options here, first would be to cancel and refile to a differant destination. This often happens with BRT flights into MAN when a restricition is put into place due fog, so only operators whose aircraft can land in 200m for example are allowed to depart. If LBA is clear they can flightplan to go here. This makes sure that each airport has the capacity to accept any inbound flights that are re-routed, as say for example LGW was closed, and everyone was intending to divert to BOH it wouldn’t be able to cope. With a re-routing you would also have to change alternates and therefore have sufficient fuel to divert away from a potential problem. (eg if it was snowing in the North of the UK you may have to change your alternate from Manchester as a worse case scenario to Gatwick or Prestwick -this would be based on their forecast’s being workable). The second option is to sit an wait it out – it’s unlikely to be known straight away how long the airfield will be closed for.

Most operators will have commercial preferances as to alternates which usually means they hay have another representation there – either logistically, engineering or even a base. On a small scale Manx2 would usually divert to Blackpool from Leeds, even if closer alternates of MAN, DSA or HUY were available, whilst Atlas Air’s primary divert from PIK may be MAN rather than GLA or EDI.

In terms of aircraft that are already airborne they would obviously have to divert. LHR would be a virtually no go area, due it’s heavy traffic flows, and parking problems once you get down. For larger operators it would be unlikely that would get there aircraft all in the same place, so Easy may share between BOH, BRS and LTN for example, BA the same perhaps also utilising STN. Charter operators and Long-haul operators are more likely to head towards BHX and MAN. Those coming from Transatlantic flights would be flying past these airfields and may simply be able to land, refuel, and await an improvement (and as mentioned above most would have a representation here). Some operators (as mentioned above by RDC1000) may even make the choice to divert back to origin (such as BA’s Shuttle flights or Other regional operators) to protect the onward flying programme, and the pax could then be re-accomodated later, or coached to the destination.

Also – best remember that if it was LGW, BOH would be closed overnight (it opens for short periods for the mail operations which are worked around controller rest), as could MSE. If it was LBA you’d presently loose the options of MME, DSA, BLK, and LPL simultainiously at certain times of night!

There are so many differant scenarios and complications in any given circumstance that it is hard to predict how any given day will fall!

. What this means for the respective airlines and naming remains to be seen…

… and more to the point – the staff. Fingers crossed that they all get kept on.

I believe G-BRYY (or alike) was your poorly Dash-8 – he ended up in LBA due to the MAN weather as well.

Was sat on the Apron at LBA still this morning.

    Nice pics!

Just out of interest, how often would you say you had a problem with FR out of 32 times. By problem i mean any things that were not normal or delays over 40mins.

32 times here too (hmmm… rather similar to Paul), and 1 real delay, again scarily similar to Paul – he was on the same flight! That was about 2 hours on SXF-EMA.

    14 Budgies – G-ATMJ, G-BVOU, G-BVOV, G-AYIM, G-ORCP, G-SOEI, G-OTBA, G-SOEI, G-OSOE, G-BGMN, G-BGMO, G-OPFW, – including G-BIUV, G-BEJD both WFU before the demise plus the ex ZS-OCF (G-BPNJ I think) which wasn’t an Emerald machine.

G-SSWO will be the only SH36 there now, G-SSWA was brokjen up before after sale to a US owner, and G-ROND and G-JEMX were flown in from ABZ the day after the AOC was pulled.

G-JEMD was on a long term hanger jobbie and will still be inside there. G-JEMB was ferried up from MRS the day after the AOC being pulled and G-JEMA (ex LPL) and G-JEMC (ex IOM or vice-versa) appeared there in Nov/Dec so that’s 4 in total – G-JEME being in BBU at the time.

Ah those Budgies… looking in such a state now! 🙁

‘JD’ didn’t have long for this world when the rest of the fleet were operating, never mind the state she’s in now, however the fact she’s out of the hanger seems to me like something else may be in and being worked upon to get airworthy.

‘WO’ another that was due for the scrapman’s axe, surprised she hasn’t followed ‘WA’ yet…

    Great pics Tartan!

Referance weight and balence, each airframe has it’s own ‘APS’ – which is derived from an actual weighing of the airframe.

For passengers there are serveral variations of weights, Male Pax, Female Pax and Children (Infants weight nothing apparently!). For these my company (as with most others) derives this into Scheduled Pax (M,F,C) or Charter Pax (M,F,C) each have differant standard weights. Taken into consideration are hand baggage etc into these figures. These are the only figures which I can see being actually slightly variable, and the cost implications of fitting however many hundred weighing stations at say LHR would be horrendiously expensive.

Baggage, Cargo and Freight (including the bins) are all weighed before onload, and as such there would be very little discrepancy here.

Fuel, Catering, Onbaord Sales eqpt etc is also added on as a unit weight to the loadsheet so to be fair, I think as said above there is no real requirement, and certainly no financial gain from having airframes weighed prior to departure.
