Oh I have every intention of still going , just trying to figure out if I could get away with a wrong turn and visit Yeovelton instead of Cumbria !
Oh dear , I was so looking forward to my first visit next month , I have 9 days in the UK . Hendon , Bruntingthorpe , Duxford , Old Warden , and some rellies wedding in Cumbria .
I believe it has been on the Net that the replicas have arrived , Peter Jackson has large facilities (studios) in Wellington a port city . A stack of 16 shipping containers is not going to look out of place in any part of Wellingtons port or industrial area . And lets face it where better to find the odd Wellington too .
The 8 full sized replica Lancasters I believe are here in NZ . However as each one can be broken down to fit in shipping containers , and shipping cotainers are not an uncommon site , particularly in a port city , I would imagine they are easily concealed in plain sight .
That is an excellant picture , why were torpedos carried like this on interwar flying boats ?
Thanks for posting the Skyways pictures , as a child I lived under the flightpath of Luton and a Skyways York was one of the aircraft I used to watch as were Ambassadors , Vikings , DC4s and Constellations .
Thanks , I suspected that , my doubt was created by an article in a reputable modelling magazine which stated these items needed to be removed to accurately portray this aircraft from the RAF Museum .
I did not know the name , but Fordson Tractor Blue certainly fits my recollection .
I am not sure if this is of any help , but , there was a superb collection of 1/72 scratch built models of all the participating aircraft which for quite a few years was displayed in the Historic Village at Tauranga here in the Bay of Plenty NZ . When this museum closed I believe these models were sent to Paraparaumu , north of Wellington , for a proposed new museum . These models were of the highest quality .
The victim in the Wirraway shoot down was more likely to have been a Hayabusa , this in no way diminishs the achievement . In the early months of WW11 there was a dogfight over the North Sea between a Saro London and I think an He 59 , not sure about the outcome but I gather it lasted quite a while .
Is that one recovery/rebuild or two ?
Really interesting photos , has anyone any more showing the detail of the tackle under the Meteor ?
Not sure a genuine 108 would do anything for me either , or for that matter a Buchon but replace the Merlin with an appropriate DB and it would be a different story . To a large degree it comes down to personal opinion , and I am very grateful to those who dig out and keep all the histories of these warbirds because that is also very interesting .
For what it is worth I love to see Spitfires at any time and rarely give a thought to the details of their authenticity . The same would go for most warbirds , but I cannot stand the Lycoming engined French Me 108 painted up as a 109 . Without the people who have the skills and the drive and the money we would never have seen the WW11 Polikarpov fighters back where they belong in the sky and I never gave a thought to how authentic they were , I just believed they were the real thing and was spellbound .
Some of the Mau Mau Harvards actually carried kill markings , go on post a picture of them I dare you .
