A couple of weeks ago I saw the ‘Tate Modern’ Jaguar going through London on a low loader, does anyone know where it is now?
Great photos of a sad retirement witha very dull colour scheme IMHO 🙁
Would be the right place to post some image of the much prettier training command scheme (red-white-gray)
Fabio
Certainly the best scheme. Great photos Moondance, and great minds obviously think alike as I dug the old scanner out when the Dominie retired a couple of weeks ago:
I didn’t attend the 1990 show, but was at 88 and 89 and can say your photos are from neither of them. I have a couple of scans which I have added to Air Britain which shows the Buccaneer at the 1989 show was XV168:
And the Sharks were there in 1989 if that helps; unfortunately I can’t get to my other photos and lists as there is a christmas tree in the way of the cupboard at the moment!
Nice photos James! I couldn’t get Saturday off work but spent a very enjoyable day standing in ‘sheep field’ on Friday. The French Navy contingent must have arrived quite late on Friday, I didn’t realise they were there.
Walked up pass the memorial hundreds of times, never seen anything like that! Great photo.
. undercarriage fire perhaps?
There was a fantastic account of this on here but it seems to have been removed. Here’s a reply;

The aircraft never flew operationally again.
Look forward to seeing this book, I mingle with the bus and train enthusiasts in Ian Allans Waterloo shop regularly!
Spitfireman – Many thanks for those, must have been quite a thing to have that lot drop in! I saw them up our way a couple of times, this one (31AG14) came to our ATC Squadron at Camelford in 1978 to check the fire extinguishers and another one was at Tintagel when the Hunter crashed in 1979.

Tornado detachment, but not sure when??
That’s the second 14 Squadron multi launch photo on this thread, first Steve’s Jaguars and now these Tornados. 14 Squadron must have liked visiting! Nice photo’s!!!
I was sorting out a cupboard last weekend and found one of Spitfiremans paintings of a Nimrod and a print of the Fire Section. I’ve heard lots of mention of Twin Rigs and Land Rovers, but the Fire section were a common sight on the airfield so I thought I would post these taken during the 1980s. Have any of you chaps got any pictures of these in action, eg the Bucc incident.
I remember Pagen saying he liked the period when everthing was painted green and surrounded with barbed wire, this one was taken in 1985 (the red Mark 9 belongs to Culdrose);
This was one of two TACR2s that had been around for 11 years when this was taken in 1988. They were about to be replaced by a pair of new TACR2as. I have heard stories that one ‘rolled’ on the airfield (poss this one looking at the state of it); any photos out there?
A variety of these Mark 9s served at St Mawgan for around 25 Years. This one had recently been repainted from toned down green to red in 1988.

But there’s no windows!
I wonder how long it will be before the council start selling off St Mawgans HAS’s for holiday homes!
Perhaps this should have gone on the Nimrod Farewell thread? This one is from Treloy Line, 1991; a year before the Nimrods left.

The Fastnet incident was 1979. I couldn’t make it for arrivals day but my photos show that the actual Air day was quite pleasant. This would have been the last IAD to have an Argus in the static display, and it was nice to see most of 7 Squadron’s Canberras with nose crests and WK127 ‘City of Truro’ which was in 404 Hangar. I also remember one of Alcobury’s F5E’s in the static display with the two or three tone blue scheme…very nice!
I always appreciated any show at St Mawgan, even the recent Families Days. Shame it’s all gone!
Both those Phantom’s are ex-892Sqn (FAA) examples aren’t they?
All gone now sadly…:( Didn’t realise it at the time, but we were actually quite spoilt for aircraft types back in the 1980’s weren’t we?
How times have changed…
Re. your video – would love to see Mike Thompson’s Lightning display again.
I believe they were both ex FAA Phantoms. 111 Squadron provided the Phantom display for both 1983 and 1984, I’ve posted this photo elsewhere recently but it shows the lovely camouflaged example they brought to St Mawgan in 1983.
Mike Thompson’s Lightning is in the background, I did get one (not very good) photo of the Lightning. I couldn’t believe what happened to him a few days later, very sad.

Is this just a result in change of angle???
Yes…the first photo shows Phantom FG1 XV569/Q parked next to Lightning F3 XR718/BK. As the C5 comes down the runway the disused runway comes into view where Harrier GR3 XW922/K and Phantom FG1 XT870/S were parked. They are lovely photos…:)
The C-5 shots confuse me slightly – I was under the impression that only one camouflaged C-5 attended a SM show (the year Baz drove us through it in his Land Rover) but I was sure it came-in very late in the day, when it was starting to go dark. Those photos look more like mid-afternoon, so was there more than one year when a camouflaged C-5 turned-up? Or wasn’t it as late an arrival as I seem to remember?! I recall it lumbered-in from the south rather than making a standard straight-in approach…
From memory (so I may be wrong) there was a C5 at the 1984 and 1990 shows.
