Here’s a sort of 29 Squadron ‘then and now’ thing. While sorting out some CDs I came across this old scan, It was taken during the ‘memorable’ St Mawgan 85 Air day:

Among my last photos taken at St Mawgan was the 29 Squadron detachment, Feb 2008.

My computer packed up a few months ago and I have been using my sons laptop. I haven’t bothered to set up my scanner (he’s always on it anyway) so I thought I would try to photograph some photographs – not as good as the scanner but the results just about passable. Here are some photos from the 90’s (Treloy Line / HAS Site / North Side).
First a couple from 20 (R) Squadron who disbanded this week;

Solo display F3, IAD 1998;
Ex Resolute Response, 1994;

Ex Brilliant Foil, 1998;
any pics of your flight?
Unfortunately no James, It was a few days before Christmas, dark when we took off in the morning and dark when we landed in the afternoon. All I had back then was a cheap Kodak 126 which I left in my ATC Bosses car.
I can’t remember a Nimrod / Canberra formation either, I do recall the Canberras doing a set piece airfield attack every year, with an RAF Regiment Bofors crew popping off blanks at them.
That last photo is very nice Steve:)!
Pagen’s right, the first with the clay pits and the last one with the Tower…..Happy memories!
It looks like the touch-up has been in RAF Camouflage Grey instead of Hemp. It looks like the same paint used in your 1991 photo of XV233…
The photos were taken on the same day and the Nimrods were parked next to each other. The colours look totally different but I am assuming both are Hemp??????
Thanks for the lovely photos Pagen! It’s unbelieveable that after countless years of Long Range Maritime Patrol cover, the powers-that-be scrap the whole lot with the flick of a ballpoint pen! Last week there was a photo in the paper of a Tornado F3 intercepting a Blackjack, it the Russian Air Force are probing more frequently these days we can only assume that their Navy are also off our shores. Perhaps no one cares any more?
My only flight in a Nimrod was in XV233 at St Mawgan way back in 1977 when they were still painted White/Light Aircraft Grey, it is an experience I will never forget.
Here is XV233 14 years later in 1991, with a fresh coat of paint and wearing 42 Squadron 75th anniversary markings;
XV242 was another St Mawgan Nimrod, I’m hoping someone can help with the colours, the paint touch up around the cockpit is the same shade as XV233, did Hemp really fade that much or did they produce different batches of the paint?
The first year that 74 Sqn displayed the F4J(UK) was 1987.
TSW…TSW? It was ‘Westward’ back in the 70’s, remember the Golden Hind logo and Gus Honeybun? 🙂
Seriously though, I bet the local TV archives have much of interest regarding St Mawgan such as reports from old Air Day’s and exercises reports.
It is listed as being seen at the 1975 show on the Scramble airshow list but my photo was probably from the equally grey 1977 Air Day.:o
WJ680 was in the static display at the 1977 show, I have a pic at home but not as good as yours. Re the 1977 show, I seem to remember it being earlier than usual, was it a rehearsal for the Silver Jubilee Review at RAF Finingley? One of the highlights was a 4 x Vulcan scramble. 🙂
I was wondering what stores were carried on the starboard side of the 63 Sqn Hunter, do you have a photo?
Fantastic photos Mike, thanks for posting them. I think this was one of the first sightings of a USAF Phantom with the tan colour replaced by what I once heard described as ‘sickly pea green’.
As for the 63 Squadron Hunter, I’m drooling!:)
Not sure about WJ680 being at the 1975 show, wasn’t there a picuture of her ‘belly landing’ on the 8th Oct 1975 somewhere on this thread, still in the old grey / dayglo scheme?
There was a Hastings at IAD 75 (TG503), and not one at IAD 77. I’m not 100% sure but I think the Hastings may have been withdrawn by 1977.
There is a picture of Hastings TG502 (ex A&AEE) on the fire dump at St Mawgan dated 1974 on the Air Britain site. What a waste!
Really close to Air day with the tents and erections (!) I would say………
I was thinking that myself, looking at Keith Saunders book and old air day checklists I would say the P3 on West Pan is 158205 RD/3 and the Argus is 10741 making the year 1975.
Looks like a Hastings on South Pan as well, fantastic pictures:) !
Wow James, they are superb! I thought that there would be more photos of 7 Squadron Canberras out there somewhere:). I like both schemes equally but always wondered about the dayglo bands, are they orange or red? Do you remember the set routine that 7 Squadron did with the Bofors crew?
The pic of WK122 with the USAF Hercules in the background was taken at the 1975 show, WJ680 was at the 1977 show in full camo.
Re 402 Hangar, I understand that the Cornwall Air Ambulance has moved to the HAS Site, possibly in preparation for some new residents next year.
Can you post those pics up Lima?
Unfortunately my scanner is kaput. But I can give you some references;
WJ639 – photo (starboard side) dated Aug 79 with Cornish Coat of Arms. Page 124 of Aviation in Cornwall by Peter London (Air Britain). I have a photo of the port side taken the same day with the same Coat of Arms and will try to get it scanned at work.
WK124 – photo (port side) dated 27/02/80 with Cornish Coat of Arms. Page 55 of RAF Gibraltar by Tony Fairbairn (Tempus publishing).
WJ879 (T4) – photo (port side) dated 27/02/80 with Cornish Coat of Arms. Page 56 of RAF Gibraltar (as above).
WK127– photo (port side) – ‘City of Truro’, page 470 of Airfix Magazine, May 1980. This photo is almost identical to my previous post. The caption states ‘BAC Canberra WK127, 7 Squadron featuring the words ‘City of Truro’ on the port side of the nose, and the corresponding coat of arms on the starboard side.
I have more pics and details but they are 250 miles away in Cornwall.
My photo of WJ639 (and the one in the book) shows a fairing in front of the Navs windows, possibly mirrors? No other Canberra seems to have this addition, does anyone know anything about this mod? If it was to enable the nav to see the winch pack why was it not added to the rest of the fleet?
Pagen As for the mysterious “City of Truro” aircraft, it is indeed true that WJ715 was also named at one stage – I’d simply forgotten about that but I have seen references to this before (but not an actual photo, strangely enough). So there must have been three Canberras which wore the inscription/coat of arms at different times.
The Cornish Coat of Arms were carried on both sides of the nose of quite a few Canberras, certainly more than 3. I have a list at home but the photos I looked at last night are of WJ639, WK124 and a T4 WJ879. As for ‘City of Truro’ I have only seen WK127, apart from my own photo there is one of her in an old Airfix Magazine. As Pagen said, it would be nice to see photos of other named 7 Squadron canberras.
Re the V Bomber dispersals, I think 229 OCU were there for a while (with Hunters) while Chivenor was undergoing work (1960s). I remember seeing 12 Squadron Buccaneers there during an ‘Ocean Safari’ Exercise, must have been 1983.
During Fincastle 1980 and 1989, both Aussie and Kiwi P3’s parked over there. Part of it is now a state of the art fire training area.
