The Fw189 & Cosmic Wind are noth diffrent both are the last of the breeds so should they really be flown

I’m not sure that the Cosmic Wind (and I’m assuming you are refering to ‘G-ARUL’ ‘Ballerina’) is the last of the breed. G-BAER still exists with Robin Voice and is airworthy, and the ex G-AYRJ (N22C I think) is/was airworthy in the states. maybe even ‘Minnow’ is still active.

The current G-ARUL is actually a total rebuild of the original G-ARUL, flown through a hedge at Halfpenny Green by Bill Innes in the late 1960s. There is a rumour that the original remains of the original Ballerina are still around…..

And anyway, try telling an owner of a private aeroplane that he cant fly it because its the only one left…..I know what I’d say!

It was parked behind ARCOs hangar during the show. I believe it was doing some trials with a magnetometer device of some description…Loads of odd aerials on the wings. Bearing in mind the BAS HQ is in Cambridge, seems sensible to base it there instead of Teversham.

As somebody who has a ‘little knowledge’ of firefighting, I can only say that a large proportion of these comments are total bull$hit, no doubt added by those who like to give opinions and sound impressive! Harry Enfield’s “Self Righteous Brothers” springs to mind…..

Firefighting and evacuation should have been carried out in parallel. Not only would the damage have been reduced, but also the risk to life, of staff and passengers, would have been less severe.

AllanL, you have been watching too many Hollywood blockbuster movies! The most important thing is to save life. What good is a less damaged aeroplane, but with several passengers injured, because people were concentrating their efforts to prevent damage to the aeroplane. Get the pax out first, then fight the fire….And you’ve obviously never seen a wood and fabric aircraft catch light? Believe me, the damage to ‘HGD was MINOR, but will require some serious work to get it airworthy again.

A MINOR incident, tackled well with no harm to any persons. What more could you ask? Shame about the aeroplane, but accidents happen. Congrats to all involved, and lets get the forum back to where it should be (aeroplanes) instead of petty sniping and whinging.

As Kenley is still a military airfield, owned by the MOD, I doubt the CAA have had anything at all to do with making the rules on what does and doesn’t fly! It’s probably no more than not wishing to pi$$ the locals off more than necessary with the sound of freedom 😮

‘Grubby spotters’…..Well the idiot that spent a good 5 mins ‘tutting’ and huffing while I was securing my aeroplane and covering it up in preparation for the incoming rain fitted that description. He was waiting for a photo opportunity and because of his attitude, never got one! 😀

Buy a Mk IX Spitfire and paint it lime green with pink spots just to annoy the purists…..!

But seriously folks, I agree with Melvyn. A million wouldn’t go far these days in running a warbird. 5-10 million heavily invested would maybe do it, but IF i won that kind of cash, I’d go for the following:

A huge estate with big grass field, devoid of NIMBY neighbours. In the heated hangar would be:

    P-51D Mustang
    F4U-7 Corsair
    Piper Super Cub
    Late model Beech 18

The CAA has issued an AD, last Thursday to be precise, but it only affected Harvards built in the USA by North American….basically echoing what the FAA Emergency AD said..

This would explain why the ARCO Harvard was airborne at Duxford on Saturday (Canadian Car & Foundry built Harvard 4)

Subsequently, Transport Canada have issued an Emergency AD to cover the Canadian built Harvards. So I assume that the UK CAA will also issue a follow up to this one, affecting all UK registered Canadian built Harvards.

Doubt if you will see a UK registered Harvard/T6 airborne now! 🙁
