Neil William’s books (Airborne & Aerobatics) are what got me interested in flying old aeroplanes and subsequently displaying them..
Doug Bianchi also died the same weekend ISTR. Has anyone read Doug’s tales written for Pilot Magazine in the 1970s of buying old aeroplanes from France? Makes me giggle even now..
They are fake cannons…. Painted to look like etc and not holes
I remember it being around where the ‘new’ A130 road crosses the railway line, so may have been moved during the construction phase. The road bridge ISTR is called ‘Memorial Bridge’. It was a 2 bladed propeller and from a Percival Prentice, although not sure that was relevant to the memorial. Haven’t seen it for years.
Tube for firing a flare gun? Similar to the P-51D….?
I hear from a mate who knows these things that during the Olympics in 2012, there will be many restrictions to GA flying, including a rumour of a complete no-fly restriction in the South East. 😮
Discuss that!!
…..having taken folks cash with no flight & no return
How many times do I have to say this to people:
“Never (NEVER!!!!) part with your money until you’re at the airfield. If the company goes down the tubes, you’ll lose it”.
Many companies use the flow of cash in return for ‘vouchers’ to make money and keep the operation afloat. It’s a well known fact that a proportion of those who have vouchers bought for them as presents never claim their flight…
I could be wrong but I’m sure he was a Phantom jockey when I was an AATC at Wattisham in 1989-1990.
The very same…….
Don’t you just love those who slag something off before they’ve even seen it………
When you think of the other reality rubbish the BBC puts out, I thought it was an excellent programme.. What people have got to realise is that in today’s society, not many people give a to$$ about history. Eastenders would get more viewers, as would the raft of Celebrity come dancing get me outta here programmes. So a brave programmer who decided to put it out in peak time viewing.
Good effort BBC, lets have some more programmes like it:D
(It gets my vote alone for going 90 mins without any boring, repetitive adverts…………. ITV/Chav TV, take note)
I think that the original nose looks far better than the pointy one.
….and the tailwheel version looks FAR better than the nosewheel job..
N662TB is immaculate inside and out
Sting probably has a JD ride on lawnmower as well:D
Hey, i’ve never been accused of being “bristling” before…
Put it this way. We all went to great expense & trouble to take some old aeroplanes to North Weald in typical crap summer weather for people to start moaning that “they look wrong”…Any wonder we get naffed off by it?
I’m going to wear a hi-viz baseball cap backwards and ear plugs next time…That looks wrong as well, but hey, its a free country..
And I repeat my last statement again.. smug or not:rolleyes:
PS I do wear a leather helmet in a Tiger Moth but only ‘cos a hard helmet catches the breeze too much!
PPS Nice pics by the way
Brian, i may have missed it somewhere but why did the Nimrod come back dismantled on a trailer?
It had an engine problem at Yeovilton in 2008 and has been away from DX for some TLC.
I know needs must when safety rules apply but imho the bonedomes look ‘wrong’ in these aircraft.
It’s just as well you didn’t notice my modern trousers, my modern watch (but at least not battery powered!), my modern yet totally unauthentic US flying suit and my modern cotton Y-fronts..!!! Modern shoes by Timberland, modern haircut by Natasha in the High street.. Modern attitude to life and not old enough to have seen authentic war service…
As one of the visiting pilots who had the sheer audacity to wear a ‘modern’ bone dome, I’ll just go with my head protecting instincts and not give a hoot about what looks right or wrong! If you wear an ‘authentic’ leather helmet with no other noise attenuation in most big warbirds, you’ll be deaf in 10 minutes, and also wouldn’t stand a chance if your head hit anything! Authentic leather versus modern Kevlar – it’s a no brainer, literally..
When you get to fly one, you can wear whatever you like….
Mmmmerlin. Possibly a spare for the HAC Spit & Hurricane.
Is that not a RR Kestrel from the Nimrod or Fury? Looks small for a Merlin.
It was made by Ford and featured the 1966? British Aerobatic team and their training. Most if not all team members were from the Tiger Club, hence the Stampe & Zlin footage….
A bloody good film. It was originally on 16mm but i appear to have a copy on video as well somewhere.
