Ah, but that is a false assumption and we have already disprove this theory of yours. The JH-7 came earlier. The Q-5, J-9 and original J-12 projects came earlier.
China had and still has FAR more fighter design experience than Israel.
In fact, when we see the Lavi, we see the F-16 because we know that for “a country with nearly no expertise in fighter jets designs from scratch,” and that description fitted Israel to a tee, it couldn’t have done it without US involvement. In fact, the Lavi became a failure to the whims of the US.
So Israel to this day STILL hasn’t designed a fighter that went into production and STILL has “nearly no expertise in fighter jets designs from scratch.”
The Lavi, which came from the F-16 (which no one can deny), failed and the Kfir is all but a Mirage (that no one can deny.)
The J-10, on the other hand, is a successful project (whose Israeli involvement that the Israeli government itself denies).

Under most scenarios (between most countries), the strike/escort formations r gonna b rather limited in numbers and most fighter pilots would probably get a single BVR shot b4 it becomes WVR. If so, would it b worth carrying a large combination BVR/WVR missiles; i.e. 4/4 or 6/6???
Well. we’re getting into a tactical discussion. And it depends on the mission. For example, if we look at a fighter sweep which is all fighters looking to draw up other fighters to clear an area, we would have the basic flight (usually four planes, though three in some air forces, including China) as the main operating unit.
US tactics, I would imagine PAF too, would be the pair system developed by the USN. This is a two planes supporting each other in a pair (lead and wingman) which in turn supports another pair. Also known as the “Fluid Four” formation. The old “Finger Four” formation used by the old USAF in the gun age was too stiff for the jet age.
Anyways, the pair system means that the lead controls the fight (usually taking the first shots) with the wingman in support. For all intents and purposes, you are talking about about at least 4/4 (bvr/wvr) missiles in a FC-1 “unit” that is expected to operate as one (the other pair depending on the flight leader and circumstances might or might not be inb support, though ideally it would be.)
Also, with an ARH BVR, there is no reason you can’t ripple off two like they do with IR AAMs. (The PLAAF seem to like doing this because there are photos of J-8IIs firing off two missiles in rapid succession.) So it is rather likely that both SD-10 would be fired off. Or four in a pair formation. They probably want to go into wvr as light as possible.
As far as carrying 6 (or even 8 in some fighters) AAMs, it depends on the size and fuel capacity of the carrying plane. Having 6 wvr missiles when you’re low on fuel makes little sense because you don’t have the time to use them effectively anyways, especially in wvr when you would need to use afterburner to break off or gain energy state advantage. In fact, the more you carry the LESS time you have since weight eats into fuel and configuration does the same (more missiles on hardpoints could mean taking up the “wet” points which could be used for external fuel.)
So if you want battlefield persistance, having more missiles on individual planes is not always the best way to go. Having more planes in more maneuverable state is often better.

Let’s face it, you’ve posted this on every other J-10 thread. You’ve stated your opinion. Almost none of us believe it, but you’ve made your point already so stating this over and over again is absolutely unnececessary 🙂
I think the FC-1 has enough power with a (hopefully) more reliable development of the engine carried for years by the Mig-29. If the RD-33M remains at the same weight as the RD-33, the possibility it’ll have a shorter life is almost guaranteed – unless the material going into it had made some sort of quantum leap and in that case, it would be much more expensive.
You can modify an existing engine is so many ways. In the end you have to make a compromise on weight, service life, thrust and expense. Higher thrust shortens life unless you increase material weight or use more expensive material that last longer under extra heat and pressure.
As we already saw in the numbers above, the operating envelope of the FC-1 already gives good TWR when it is needed. By the time you need high maneuverability for a WVR dogfight, you’ve most likely have fired off your bvraams and have used up a portion of your fuel. At that point, the FC-1 would be flying at or over unity.
Too bad there was nothing about the planes involved and the other Chinese BVR projects. It would be nice to know if the SD-10 will arm the Chinese SKs.
Half of the interview centers on the AIM-120 and bvr theories and history with the AIM-7. It only mentions the R-27 in passing. It’s very west-centric.
On the first half of page 6, the designer talked about the tests on drones. The tests were extremely successful with both direct and proximity hits on drones flying under different parameters. But he doesn’t say which plane(s), even though we know from other reports that the initial tests were conducted by a J-8IIF. It would nice to know if another type of plane had the many other tests since 2002.
There is definitely a bit of a sales pitch involved here. The PL-9C is mentioned but not the PL-11/FD-60. Rival design house (Shanghai instead of Louyang)? The Louyang export package being pushed for fighter armament is SD-10/PL-9C.
The last part of the article talks about future development as pushing the range in future missiles to 300-400 kms 🙂
The AGAT question brings up an interesting point from the past.
Richard Fisher wrote in his review of the 2002 Zhuhai airshow that:
“Louyang vociferously denied reports that the SD-10’s radar and data link are from the Russian AGAT bureau, insisting they were indigenous.
“Louyang also said that they are considering SAM and naval SAM variants of the SD-10. A brochure of the SD-10 exists but they were not distributing them. A Louyang official also noted that their new advanced short-range AAM would be smaller than existing PL-9 and PL-5 models, and would be helmet-sighted. “
At the time, “sources noted that the PLAAF has conducted about 20 test flights for the new Louyang SD-10 (Project 129) active-guided air-to-air missile (AAM). The tests included full missile self-guided to target missions.”

JF-17 is not much larger than the Gripen, if it ever is. I think both are about the same general size. Gripen’s empty weight is around 6600kg (Flug Revue has it as high as around 7,000kg). so not only is the Gripen not lighter, it is actually heavier while the FC-1 is 6321kg (CATIC) or 6400kg (CAC). The Gripen’s internal capacity if I remember is around 2200kg, a bit smaller than the FC-1.
The Gripen appears to have better (lower) wing loading than the FC-1 due to the larger wing area, but that also means increased drag, especially at lower speeds where a delta is not so efficient. That also offsets against your fuel efficiency in range.
The Gripen is definitely a little heavier.
Empty weight:
JAS 39A: 6,622 kg (14,600 lb)
JAS 39B: 8,000 kg (17,637 lb)
Internal fuel weight: 2,268 kg (5,000 lb)
Ferry range is not measured by internal fuel, it is measured by the absolute maximum of fuel you can carry including external fuel tanks.
Also, efficiency of engines. Different engines have different fuel consumption rates.
But from the weight figures alone, 3000km for both is just about right.
The larger 3,500km figure mentioned for the FC-1 would have to come from a larger external fuel configuration and/or a more fuel efficient engine.

I would rather trust the brochure a bit more since it is the one they pass out at the shows.
Though print material could be dated. But then again we have no idea whether the site was updated in a while. Actually the information does look a little old, especially that computer graphic picture. They should have a real pict by now if they had updated.
The Su-30MK is arguably more mature in the strike role as well as more equipment has been tested and adapted (got to thank the Chinese for that). And of course it fits nicely with the Su-27SKs doing air defense/superiority and escort and the Su-30MKs doing strike with Su-22M-4Ks and MiG-21s playing AD.
Why didn’t you thank the Chinese for the SKs too? 😀

The J-10 intake (squared) far more different from the Lavi (rounded) than the Lavi is from the F-16 (also rounded). Not mention that F-16 and Lavi both have wing tip launch rails which the J-10 do not.
The F-16 and Lavi looks much closer, almost as close as the Japanese F-2 and F-16.

He was asked about the rankings and he answered them off the cuff. It doesn’t sound like he had a list that he had made up before hand and was reading off of it.
Now, he mentions the active version of Skyflash – not the basic SARH one – possibly SkyFlash 90 being developed for the Swedes. (In fact, if I could dig it out there somewhere, I could swear there was something about a Skyflash ARH recently.)
He did say that the Derby’s range is limited but he seems to be impressed by its other qualities. Maybe he was just familiar with and admiring of Israeli tech (you could see this is other Chinese interviews, including FC-1/J-10 test pilot interview who placed the Israeli Air Force at number one in his view). The Derby isn’t that well-known of a missile. Neither is the Skyflash. For him to mention them is no coincidence, IMHO.
He didn’t say the MICA is a bad missile, he mentioned it as an afterthought.
The vast majority of the interview dealt with the AIM-120 which is clearly what the SD-10 design group is most enamored with. There is no explicit mention of AGAT as the seeker head manufacturer of the SD-10.

My guess for normal combat load is two PL-5s/equiv (170kg), two SD-10/equiv (360kg), and internal fuel(2,300):
6,300kg(empty weight) + 170kg + 360kg + 2,300kg = 9,130kg.
.91 TWR for normal TO weight.
Once the two bvraams are fired off and remaining internal fuel nears midpoint, you’d have a TWR of over unity for a few minutes of dogfighting with two IR AAMs if it ever came down to that 😀
