On F-16 losses. Asian air forces that operate the F-16 report a pretty low crash rate.

The ROCAF has 4 losses of F-16s. They’ve been operating 150 of the type since 1996 or about a plane every two years.

The PAF husbanded around 36 planes for two decades in the face of an US embargo on spares.

The ROKAF has flown the F-16 since the 1980s and has 160 of them and I can’t recall any spate of Korean F-16 crashes. I believe their loss rate is minimal.

The difference might be that in those countries, they’re mainly for air superiority roles not strike.

Also a big factor is they are reserved for elite pilots in Asia, not the rank and file.

Eric Hartmann once said that the F-104 was a great performance machine but it was a horrible plane for the average pilot and especially a new pilot and he said so to warn the Luftwaffe. The same might be said for the F-16 which FBW or not is an unstable plane.

Reread AFM’s Italy entry and it said negotiations were initially for a simple lease of 30 F-16As and 4 Bs but has continued beyond that. It didn’t mention C/Ds specifically, an error on my part. I was also reading Key Mags F-16 special edition and F-16 C/Ds based at Aviano, Italy, and the wires got crossed when I posting. Sorry.

Bagladesh and Romania aren’t exactly fantastic examples of countries with the resources and elan to keep professional air arms with high-tech aircraft running (really, MiG-21 Lancer force? You might as well not bother with an AF at all, they’re only good for air shows).

But, Vympel, that’s exactly the point. Romania is giving up the Mig-29 in favor of the Mig-21 in spite of the former’s obviously better performance and capabilities. Maintenance-wise, the Mig-29 is a beast for countries to operate. Obviously, if either Bangladesh or Romania could afford it, they could continue to operate the Fulcrum as long as they are willing to spend.

Or if they had the money, they could go buy something that is a less of a pain to operate. Like Hungary, which is leasing Gripens and moving the Mig-29 to backline units where they are expected to fly even less.

Read AFM’s April edition. The Hungarian Mig-29 pilot could only fly 60 hours yearly. Not because Hungary is trying to save money on fuel, they actually want their pilots to fly more because the NATO requirement is 180 hours. That’s why they opted for Gripen even though it’s much more expensive (much more than making their current Mig-29s NATO compliant.)

Also, operating small numbers of advanced aircraft isn’t seen as exactly the most efficient course of action; part of the reason for Germany’s transfer of its small number of MiG-29s to the established operator that is Poland. There are a lot more MiG-29 operators who can operate the aircraft than there are those few ‘peasants’ (for lack of a better term) that can’t cope.

Poland’s initial choice was the Gripen and now it’s the F-16, the Mig-29 fell by the wayside a long time ago. If the Germans hadn’t offered it for free and if it hadn’t been German (and therefore well-maintained, in spite of the costs or hardships), Poland wouldn’t have even considered them. If they’d really wanted them, they could have bought the 8 off the “peasants” in Bangladesh.

Seriously, neither Hungary or Romania (which has an aviation industry for goodness’ sakes) could be considered “peasants.” Bangladesh is a country of over 100 million which is already tendering a contract for new fighters. Just new ones that they hope are more easily maintained.

The Su-27 was only unstable in the pitch 😉

Actually, most “unstable” planes are :p

In all fairness, the Mig-29 is probably the worst example and has a horrible serviceability record. Its reputation certainly isn’t helped by news such as Bangladesh failing to keep even 8 running and Romania, which had operated the type for years, abandoning it for an all Mig-21 Lancer force (AFM, April 2004).

But on the other side of the argument, there are 1000s upon 1000s of two engined J-6s and Q-5s which served the PLAAF for years. The same with the F-5 which was and is operated by many poorer third world nations. While the turbojets in the J-6 had a short life and were overhauled and replaced often, obviously the cost of doing so wasn’t prohibitive.

Now it is possible that two older unsophisticated WP-7s are probably less expensive and easier to maintain than a single AL31.

There is no doubt that two engines will require more attention and consume more fuel than one of the same type. The F-16 would cost less and require less maintainance than the F-15 using the same Pratt & Whitneys.

But a F-6 with two WP6s would probably cost much less than a F-16’s single powerplant but consume much more fuel 😀

GD….I just made the guy think what he’s saying…I knew it was a flamebait, but it could be turned the other way round ;), anyway..now that its confirmed..FBW is there…anymore details on it?

Phrozen, details on the FC-1’s FBW system were pretty well-documented in the older FC-1 thread. The common Chinese term for it in the news and in a tv series was a “3-axis, 4-times fax control system” in babelfished Chinese terms.

This really isn’t new. These are just new news reports from the 03’s flight restating earlier Chinese ones that I posted months ago, shortly after 01’s official flight.

Although there were repeated arguments by people who dismissed these earlier reports then and said that the FC-1 was simply FBW in pitch only (I actually have no idea where people suddenly began saying this because I could find no record where CAC had ever said the FC-1 was FBW in one axis only and further went on to name that one axis as the pitch), the tv show – of which there were many screencaps in the original thread, in particular, stated that it was full FBW. Three axis is full FBW control of the pitch, roll and yaw. 4 times is the quad redundancy. The test boxes (prototype strapdown units?) for the computer controlling the 4 systems – A,B,C,D – were pictured.

Now, it is possible that prototype 01 might have been a mixed conventional and FBW control system because the PAF had released news saying “mixed conventional and FBW.” But the Chinese reports, especially the TV shows, even then were saying 3-axis quad FBW for the FC-1.

The latest news on 03’s flight, you might notice, don’t say anything about a “mix of conventional and FBW controls” 🙂

I remember that too. I have a pic I saved ages ago. (turns out to the same as Srbin’s)

That’s the most common PAK-FA picture I’ve seen but is it something released by Sukhoi or just artistic speculation?

The J-XX project has been around much earlier than PAK-FA, US Naval intelligence drew a speculative picture of it years ago (actually, you almost always see mention of the J-XX in articles about the J-10.)

    Point to note;

    Source: Press Trust of India

The JF-17/FC-1 is described as a multi-role attack fighter with delta wings, a conventional tail and a fly-by-wire flight control system.

PS. I wonder which weekly the report is referring to? Janes???

The story is basically a replicate of the JDW’s report and a whole series of articles from both Chinese and Pakistani press.

They all stated FBW and 2006 as the limited series induction date. Most also stated there were stealth features and a large production run of 1,000 (which implies PLAAF interest in the Chinese press reports while the Pakistani reports said this explicitly.)

These are news items not layman opinions by internet posters.

Oops, “was” as when the Cava was designed. Oh yes, SA still has formidable tech base. Aside from China, the only third world nation producing a bvr 🙂

Of course, part of SA was never “third world.”
