A more typical operational aircraft compliment would probably involve a single regiment of fighter/attack aircraft. This would typically be 8 or 16 aircraft, depending on the mission requirement. One also would expect a compliment of 4-8 ASW helicopters, a detachment of 2 SAR (Sea Air Rescue) helicopters and a detachment of 2 AEW (Airborne Early Warning) helicopters. If the newest aircraft available to the Navy were assigned, one would expect the jets to be a carrier variant of the Su-30 (two batches of 20 ordered in 2003 for the PLAN) plus variants of the Ka-28 Helix helicopter. If older aircraft are operated, one might encounter J-6 (MiG-19), J-7 (MiG-21) or J-8 fighters (two engine mod of MiG-21), JH-7 (Chinese design) or Q-5 (mod MiG-19) attack aircraft, and Z-8 (Super Frelon) or Z-9 (Dauphin) helicopters. If Army Aviation Corps helicopters were embarked, the most likely would include Mi-181 transports and the attack variant of the Z-9.

This part from the second article is very suspect and it shows that the writer doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

There is simply no way that a J-6, -7, -8 and Q-5 could operate off a carrier.

Though we’ve seen pictures of a carrier model with J-8IIs.

    Here is a followup article.

NAVAL AVIATION: Odd Composition of Chinese Carrier Aviation

February 18, 2004: There is no evidence that dedicated air groups are forming for the new PLAN (Peoples Liberation Army Navy) Project 9935 carriers. At the same time, all PLAN fixed wing fighter and attack pilots have been required to “carrier qualify” on a mock up of the flight deck of Australian HMAS Melbourne. Given this mock up is at a PLAAF (Peoples Liberation Army Air Force) base, it may be that PLAAF pilots also have been practicing deck landings. The investment in the carrier project also involved building maintenance facilities, purchase of foreign aircraft carriers for study and the purchase of foreign aircraft carrier designs from Spain and Russia. These investments, combined with the reported laying down of actual hulls, combine with the lack of newly-formed air groups for the ships to imply that existing air units will be assigned to them.

That article (and the original Hong Kong news story) had floated around the Chinese forums. Not entirely believable but they did put up a project number and you rarely see this happening in articles written on pure speculations.

Details like them being non-power projection but aerial defense seems to fit in well with Chinese doctrine.

I think they will be used in the Strait. The carriers planes will protect ships in conjunction with land based aircraft. In fact, it is possible that land-based fighter could provide CAP over the carriers while the carriers’ aircraft protect surface ships further afield thereby extending the range of the PLANAF.

They are almost certain to based entirely along the Chinese east coast and especially the Taiwan Strait if they exist.

Historically, China has never downgraded an export weapons system. And in fact, upgrades them for outside sales.

The F-7Ps and F-7PGs sold the PAF were more advanced than the F-7IIs and F-7Es of China’s own airforce.

Downgrading is what the Russians do with their “monkey” versions. It has never been a Chinese trademark.

Pakistan’s preference for Western style fit and finish has led to increasingly nicer planes for the PLAAF itself. The current J-7G is an example.

That is a rewording of the following Kanwa article

    http://www.kanwa.com/free/2003/12/e1215a.htm

China’s 4th generation fighter (called 5th generation fighter in Russia) development is entering the wind tunnel testing stage.

Kanwa’s investigation reveals that due to sufficient injection of financial resources, China is now entering all technological areas related to the US and European 5th generation combat aircraft, including TVC engine, new generation phased array multi-functional fire control radar and some others.

The homegrown 1473 radar system fitted on J10A fighter proves that China’s own advanced radar development has walked out of the stage of experimentation, probing or absorbing foreign new technologies. China is entering a period of self-confident application of her own cutting-edge technologies. Meanwhile, China is also researching/developing the radar system capable of tracking 15 targets and attacking 6 simultaneously. In the development of engines, all new experiments are being conducted on the WS10A platform. In the future 10 years, WS10A and its subsequent upgraded versions are expected to enter actual application stage.

Senior General Kornukov, the Russian Air Force Commander-in-chief, told Kanwa in 2001 that Russia did not invite China to participate in the research of 5th generation fighter. SUKHOI also stressed lately that the whole project would basically be conducted by Russia alone, with SUKHOI as the leading institution plus the participation of other design bureaus like MIKOYAN and YAKOVLEV.

Haley, desist before you turn into worthless scum like F-18 Hamburger. His unfunny attempts at being cute literally sickens me now as he tries repeatedly to flood threads with food crap that has long since lost any appeal as something original or humorous.

You are fast approaching that disgusting standard with attempts at wit that nobody could remotely comprehend.

Again, this is only my humble opinion.

I would imagine that the Mig-29 squadron would be the elite. But Bangladesh only has three pursuit squadrons so they’re all pretty “elite” in a sense.

Every nation’s air force has a core air space defense doctrine irrespective of potential enemies. Switzerland, Holland and Austria which have absolutely no surrounding threats still need interceptors or else people (and UFOs) will treat soveriegnty in the open spaces over your country with inpunity.

A Wall Journal article on Austria’s airforce a while ago told of repeated violations by US planes running through their air space to Iraq (pre-war) to save time. The Drakens were worked hard. And if they can’t catch up, the USAF simply denied that any violations ever occurred (thus the radar blips streaking across Austria get marked down as “ufos.”) I’m not sure what the arrangements are today.

In Bangladesh’s case, it’s practically surrounded by another, larger country and unless there is some semblance of pursuit, then external planes will simply use Bangladesh as a shortcut or as an exercise patsy.

I did more to put the Chinese subjects in the right directions than anyone else after repeated FC-1 threads were closed down right at the moment when the FC-1 was unveiled.

Posting nonsensical crap in bad english under a Canadian flag is doing nothing for our “own kind.”

My advice to SD-10 was the same I’m giving to you. Ignore the flamers and post pictures and news stories. Both of you do a pretty job at that.

Like I said at the beginning of my landmark FC-1 thread, IGNORE them. The best way to to respond to jealous, unimportant people from politically unimportant places is to ignore their jealous unimportant opinions.

Now if you want to respond, at least respond in a straight forward understandable manner that’s all I’m saying.

Unlike you I show my dislike and disdain for people in an open manner because I know my English is not good enough to attempt any backhanded witticism or sarcasm. Yours isn’t either.

But you are an adult and how you do things is up to you. I’m just giving you my humble opinion 😀

BTW, a feud between a Canadian (you) and a Chinese (me) is not “family.”
