So is the 04 a pre production model ? An with this version what are the full and final technical specs for the FC-1 ?
01, 03 and 04 are all prototypes of the FC-1. As such they each show differences on the path of development. There is no flying prototype planned after 04. 05 is supposed to be the second static prototype.
The FC-1 program (similiar to other Chinese programs):
P 01 is the first flying prototype.
P 02 is the static machine reflecting 01
P 03 advances the aerodynamics of 01 as well as adding flight time
P 04 extends 03 and incorporates weapons and avionics as well as adding even more flight time
P 05 is static machine reflecting the final changes inducted through the flying prototypes.
Normally, the fourth prototype does not incorporate such radical changes in aerodynamics such as the extended LERX and the DSI so it is possible there could be deviance from the original plan of five prototypes.
Each extra prototype rachet up the cost of the program, though. There has not been any word that there would be any change from the five prototype planned.
It is more than possible that the LERX and DSI has been built into the design as possible changes from the very start. Very hard to imagine they would fly an aircraft with diverterless intakes, a technology that has never been tested in China – or anywhere else for that matter – for 16 minutes if it was not designed into the airframe from an early stage.
The FC-1 was advertized as a modular machine with avionics, engines, weapons and even flight control (full FBW, conventional or on FBW on one axis only) and flight characteristics left for future addition or revision.
As such, there is no full or final specs as of yet.
The FC-1 is not going into production with “just” 16 minutes of flight time. The FC-1 program has two flying prototypes, 01 and 03, which have already clocked large numbers of flight. The 04 would push the program flight time even further ahead.
The program is componentized from the very beginning. The component parts are already being built in anticipation of production. Just read the articles.

A partial picture.
Hmmm, the official China Daily is calling the new prototype FC-4. Not sure if a mistake or a new designation. It also called the 03 prototype FC-3.

Fighter jet takes off to new heights
By Xiao Zhao (China Daily)
Updated: 2006-04-29 07:00The country’s aviation industry soared to new heights on Friday, when it successfully tested an upgraded version of a new generation fighter in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province.
The Xiaolong/FC-4 (“Fierce Dragon) plane flew for 16 minutes over the provincial capital of Chengdu, where its developer, the Chengdu Aircraft Group Corp under the China Aviation Industry Corp I (AVIC I), is based.
The success of the flight demonstrated improvement in the innovative capacities of China’s aviation industry. It brought its development of new generation fighters to the world’s advanced levels, according to a company statement.
The test flight set the stage for mass production of the multiple-purpose light aircraft, according to company sources.
The model’s earliest version FC-1 made its maiden flight in 2003. An improved version FC-3 took off for a seven-minute flight the following year.
Compared with previous designs, the latest model has been dramatically improved in overall quality and combat capacity, the AVIC I sources said. It is suitable for the 21st-century combat environment, they said.
The plane is equipped with the country’s most advanced electronics and weapons systems and the cost-effective fighter can satisfy domestic and international market demands, the company added.
In the 1980s China said it would develop a new generation of fighter aircraft. Its development programme officially kicked off in 1999, led by AVIC I.
Defection.
Never thought I would see the day that Forbes (a major business magazine) is reporting on PLAAF products 😀
This open export philosophy has made PLA-watching too easy 🙂
It seems that the FC-1 pipeline is already starting hum. Without doubt one of most anticipated new fighters in the world today.

China tests new prototype jet fighter
04.28.2006, 08:21 AM
BEIJING (AFX) – China tested a new prototype of the FC-1 Xiaolong combat jet jointly developed with Pakistan, and is gearing up for mass production of the plane, Xinhua news agency reported.
The fourth prototype of the Xiaolong aircraft, a multi-role fighter-bomber with a range of 1,200 kilometers, successfully completed a 16-minute test flight from a base in southwest China’s Sichuan province, Xinhua said.
Production of different parts of the plane has already begun in anticipation that the plane would soon be mass produced, the report said.

FC-1 is ready for batch production

2006-04-28THE fourth prototype of FC-1, China’s self developed fighter, accomplished its first test-fly in Chengdu Today, China News Service reported.
Based on the first and third prototypes, the fourth accepted an upgrading design on aerodynamics, structure and system. It has a better performance by introducing the most advanced electronic weapon and air inlet systems in China.
As the fully operable prototype, it’s successful test-fly means China is able to batch produce the fighter, the news service said.
The FC-1 (Fighter China-1) Xiaolong is a single-seat, single-engine, multirole fighter developed by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation.
The first FC-1 rolled out from the assembly line on 31 May 2003, and its 15-minute maiden flight took place on 24 August 2003.
Two variants of the Y-8 radar variants including the pancake and the side scan.
Interesting picture on the Y-8 pancake. It looks like an older solid-nose Y-8F400 platform instead of the new “category III” which carries the balance beam.
A new J-10 picture for Deino 😀
Seems a little odd to have the maritime patrol aircraft with 4 engines. I mean, the maritime patroller doesnt seem to be a HUGE aircraft. I think maintenance costs could have been brought down by putting 2 CFM-56’s onto the aircraft instead, but they must have some reasons for choosing this layout… ideas anyone?
Maritime patrol requires extreme endurance. Four engines is a safety and operational advantage just as naval fighter aircraft with two engines is generally picked over those with one.
Operating a 4 engine patrol craft is actually more economical when engine wear is concern. For example, 4 engines operating at 40% of capacity can generate the same amount of lift as as two engines going at 80%. The less the engines are used, the more life they’ll have.
Another part of it has to do with legacy. The C-X and P-X were designed to share common components but the two airframes were created with the two aircraft they are replacing (the C-1 and the P-3, respectively) in mind.
The C-1 has two engines and the P-3 is a four-engined turboprop.

The maiden flight of China’s third generation fighter Xiaolong 04 will take place at the end of April 2006, according to China Aviation News. Xiaolong 04 is equipped with complete avionics systems. In addition, its structure has been optimized and appearance adjusted, which gives certain boost to combat capability.
