The Tu-214R would be more like J-Star.

Any more news or esp. photos of this version ?? All I remember is a tiny detail of a fuselage in the background with some “strange” cheeks attached.

Nice pics.

I am curious why PAF did not go for a Chinese tanker? Those should be cheaper and spare parts more easily available.

China simply has nothing to sell at the moment with this capability.

An interesting story on the decomissioning of old Su-27SK.
This was in 2009.
Surly the PLAAFSu-27SK inventory have decreased.
How many operative Su-27SK in the PLAAF today?

Actually a good question esp. of those who were delivered in the first batch to the 1. & 2. Division, but besides that and at least for me quite surprising the “old” Su-27UBK were modified to use the R-77.

As such I think it’s strange to retire single-seater/fighter (maybe due to the exhausted airframe live !?) but to modify trainers to be combat capable ?!:confused:

Hmmm .. Yes, but why a Tu-204 as a testbed !??

Since the PLAAF and PLANAF only used the house&drouge system a new pod could be tested simply on one of the standard HU-6 or even Il-76 … and a refuelling boom is IMO unlikely !?

Actually in the pictures eagle talon posted it looks like the air china livery has been removed… or PSed off? o.O

Actually I think both photos (his and mine too) show the same aircraft ! As such I thik it is retired frigther with the Air China livery removed … but the question remains: what does the text on his photo says … is this text real (or psed) and where was the photo taken ??

Actually that makes it very intersting and a bit mysterious. If that bird is now at Yanglian, then there is something special about it … the term “hard tube” would make something related with a tanker likely, but IMO the Tu-204 is too small to be usefull … or it will be converted simply as a testbed !??

If that is a Tu-204 – which sub-type is it – did you note that there are no windows for passengers? And that it also has Chinese characters?! I was not aware that CFTE at Yanliang operated Tu-204 type aircraft – plus what is your guess as to what and why was the image so heavily censored? And what is your take on the phrase “hard-tube?”

I think – to admit not knowing the corrct designation – that it is this aircraft. I found this photo some time ago and it seems to be a frighter version formerly operated by Air China Cargo (like this one: http://www.flightglobal.com/assets/getAsset.aspx?ItemID=17249)

Besides that is it confirmed at Yanglian and the text also ???

Apparently a new type of Chinese air to air refueling tanker has been tested at Yanliang north of Xian. It is assumed that it is like the USAF’s KC-135 Stratotanker using the flying-boom type of transferring fuel. There is no information on the reciever aircraft type however – and also no date given on when the apparent tests occurred. “They” refer to it thus “Chinese hard-tube (meaning flying-boom?) fuel tester brazenly exposed.”
It is – the image – highly censored so not much detail can be made out about aircraft type except that it is thought to be twin-engined.

No, surely not … that’s simply a Tu-204 with its tail “standing” just behind the wing’s winglets !
