The designations appear to be more like from Western speculators than actual Chinese ones.

Regarding these Chinese might look like here are two illustrations of how the J-8 was expected to look like …. 😀

    Enjoy, Deino

Thank You both and I agree that …

The designations appear to be more like from Western speculators than actual Chinese ones.

    … so that we finally have the JH-7 (= twin Spey-powered), the J-9 (= delta-winged) and Q-6 (= VG-design) once mis-speculated as a future “F-12”.

But let’s try again: Regarding the political situation developed different and there was no “Tiananmen-massacre” in 1989, were there any considerations for a …

a new “clean sheet” design, based around one of these three engines, sometimes referred to as the “F-12” in the Western press.

Keeping in mind that Grumman was the leading US company for the J-7/8 work it might have been a Grumman-based design !?!

    Any ideas ???

Crobato have many aircraft progams have you managed? i guess you must be a great designer as Artem Mikoyan, i wonder the MiG-23PD and latest MiG-23 powered by Al-31 are not true.

Crobato did SIBNIA worked in the J-10 from the begining? from 1988 onwards, your doubts have to be true because you are Artem Mikoyan junior 😀 godfatehr of Lyulka who knows everything about aircraft structural design you are a PHD in aircraft manufacturing.

Crobato honestly relax the evidences shows re engining is not as complex as you put it.

Sorry Flogger, strevitel, MiG-23MLD or whatever You may call Yourself; I have enough of You.

May I just return to that …. ???

Who are You ??? Are You the real godfather of aerospace technology, aerodynamics, structures, powerplant engineering and maybe the grandfather of Mikoyan as You always show by You most preferred names ???

Honestly I doubt that You even have the least meaning of discussion, argumentation or logic, I would even go that far to ask how old are You and what kind of education You received in Your life so far.

I know, Your answer now will be similar to the last posts that I will once see my mistakes when time will tell the complete J-10 history and we all here will hail and cheer to You, as You were the only one who has seen the whole truth and the complete story behind the J-10’s history since years. Maybe You are that mysterious designer and chief engineer of the J-10 and only because Your design for that fighter failed You went to Russia to plea for help. But sadly we are all blinded by our arrogance or pride (…sorry not sure about the original quote, but I think it was similar nonsense You wrote the last time !).

As a teacher for Chemistry I learned never to give up hope even in the worst cases of stupidity and nonsense besides my pupils … maybe someday they will understand their illogic argumentation !
But with You I think I have to resign !

As such this will be definitely my last reply to any of Your posts regardless of what You wrote.

With best wishes for Your future at Mikoyan OKB + have a nice weekend,

These three were often mentioned as contendors, I might add, for a variety of lightweight fighter competitions at the time, including the Gripen, the Lavi, India’s LCA, and Yugoslavia’s Novi Avion. At one point, China was reportedly contemplating a new “clean sheet” design, based around one of these three engines, sometimes referred to as the “F-12” in the Western press.

Just something to add ! Is this “J-12” only another thing of misunderstanding / mistranslation like the often refered delta- and VG-designs based on the MiG-23 which finally came out as the J-9 and Q-6, or were there actual some considerations for a “clean sheet” with developed with US assistance ???

I repeat that question as it’s the second time this week this “clean sheet”-design is mentioned as a J-12 !

    Thanks in advance, Deino

Oh please bay STOP that nonsense !!!

    1. Yes, You are right the original MiG-23PDP / MiG-23 prototype 23-01 used a R-23 but if You look closely its a “very” different machine to the serial MiG-23 Flogger-B or even latest serial versions.

    2. There is actually no Indian MiG-27 flying with a AL-31F and if that ever will happen … we will see !

    3. just to sum up: Yes many different aircraft were modified and re-engined from prototype to production version but only because it is possible it doesn’t mean the J-10 was the same. The main question still is: is it technological possible ??? … and then for what expense ??

I still don’t understand why only You insist in this theory; no-one else here denies that there was assistance from Russia und/or Israel but not the way You like it.

I think You like the “if that = then that” versions:

    1. If the J-10 has a similar configuration like the Lavi = it has to be a Lavi-clone.

    2. If there were Israelis in China (regardless for what other project which no-one denies !) = that prooves point 1.

    3. If the Russians modified some of their own projects with different engines = that has to be the same in China (regardless the differences in airframe …)

… I think I could continue that list but I don’t want any more.

So PLEASE once again; STOP that nonsense !

The reason why the oppose this is becasue they feel offended, they will be intrenched upon a false believe due to pride.

I don’t think that this is the reason ! No-one here denied a Russian or a Israeli assistance. Most of us only oppose that stupid statement that the J-10 is nothing more than a Lavi reworked by Russians … not to speak of that WP-13 issue for a possible first prototype !

Is that the second half of the two-part thing on the J-10 Paul? I didn’t think the next issue had appeared yet, (it still probably hasn’t appeared over here just yet). Is it any good?

I like that article very much … it was a very good read even if some things can be discussed it’s for my opinion the first article in a Western magazine that not only repeats that J-10 = Lavi-copy theme !

If You like here is the complete scan of that article:

    http://www.sinodefenceforum.com/showthread.php?t=2252

Didn’t Israel design the Arye fighter jet? Never got built, but that’s design experience. IAI also built the Lavi demonstrators, so there’s actual production experience as well.

In Germany we would say “Jein” as a mix of YES and NO !

The Arye was actually at first the project behind the Lavi as it was started to explose several configurations. One of them became the Lavi as it was finally flown.

    Cheers, Deino 😀

If you want to me select a reason in between brilliant or foolish, I and the rest will go the brilliant, do you?

Thanks a lot for that !!!

I just need to change that statement only a little but to sum up this discussion:

If you want to me select a version in this discussion between a brilliant argumentation or a foolish list of unreliable sources without any technical argument to support it, I and the rest will go the brilliant, do you ?

I think there are some more who think the same !

    Let`s go by parts

Russian sources claim the israelies and Chinese struck a secret deal in which they commited to further develop the IAI Lavi, the motives were clear, Israel needed china as a weapons customer and did not want to waste the IAI Lavi Technology paid for, the documentation pertaining to the IAI Lavi was delivered to Chengdu, Chengdu got leadership of the program and they developed with the Israeli a prototype fitted with the best engine China had. the WP-13, the engine and aircraft fell short of expectations, pressured by China, Russia accepted to be a partner, they fitted a better engine, the Al-31. SIBNIA ( Chaplygin Siberian Aeronautical Research Institute / SIBNIA) did some design work for the Chinese.

China recieved assistance in radar, weaponry and aerodynamics by Russian and Israeli engineers.

If you want to accept this version that goes very well with Western claims of Israel passing that technology, well is up to you.

but is more less what the Russians say

Russian sources claim at least 500 J-10s will be built, and up to 1500 if everything goes on schedule

Ok …. that’s one side of the medal … or the first version !!

But what do You think about that version ???

“The J-10 project was conceived in the 1984 based on the experience (tailless delta wing and canard foreplanes) with J-9 which was cancelled in 1980 in favor of the less risky J-7C/MIG-21MF project. An early model of J-10 revealed a Mirage 2000 style intake with a center shock cone for better high speed performance and a Lavi style tail section, suggesting a possible connection with the cancelled Israeli fighter (however this was firmly denied by both parties). The change indicates that J-10 has gone through at least one major redesign in its 18-year development period from the initial conventional layout as an air-superiority fighter to the latest semi-stealthy design as a multi-role fighter. This change may reflect a shift of its potential adversaries from former Soviet Mig-29/Su-27 to current American F-15/16/18 after end of the Cold War.

The development of J-10 has not been smooth. A full-scale mock-up was built in 1993. High-speed taxing occurred in 1996. The first prototype was set to fly in 1996, powered by a newly designed WS-10 turbofan based on the CFM56 engine core technology. However the development of this indigenous engine suffered some serious difficulties and thus the rear fuselage and engine intake were forced to be redesigned in order to accommodate an alternative AL-31FN engine imported from Russia. After a 15-month delay, the first prototype (01) made its maiden flight on March 23, 1998, two years behind the schedule. 6 prototypes (serial numbers 1002-1009) were built undergoing various static and flight tests at CAC in Chengdu and at the CFTE in Yanliang. Subsequently 3 more prototypes were built (1013-1016) as the project was moving into the pre-production phase while PLAAF remained fully committed. The flight test of J-10 was completed by the end of 2003 and the serial production started earlier that year. Approximately two are being produced each month. A total of 300 have been planned. The first J-10A in production standard first flew on June 28, 2002.

…. and so on: So You say Huitong is completely wrong ??

    http://mil.jschina.com.cn/huitong/J-10_J-11_FC-1.htm

Or – as a compromise between both: Once apon a time there was a Lavi secretly delivered to China, the copied and powered by a WP-13. After the Chinese were unhappy with the flight test results they decided to redesign and improve it by adding the AL-31FN ! :p … and that all in a very short time because of Russian help !!!

…. which is pure nonsense as it would require a complete re-design not only for the larger-diameter Russian engine, but also for the intake and the fuselage and the wing …. which makes it de facto a completly new aircraft !

And that’s it – nothing more and nothing less – the Lavi is the Lavi and the J-10 is the J-10 !

man you can opt for one thing do not believe the Russians, continue thinking the Israelies have nothing to do with the plane however the Russians say the J-10 is a more complex aircraft than the IAI lavi.

The only thing i can say to you is that is what the Russian sources say i can give you more sources is you want.

I think You have a severe problem with reading and understanding !

I never said that all Russians were lying nor did I say that the Israeli had nothing to do with that plane.

All I say is that only because of several Russian internet pages – which often quote one each other and repeat every time the same – that the J-10 is a development of or even clone of the Lavi this statement won’t become truth !

I agree that there have been some Russian assistance – mainly with engine integration and maybe some other systems too – but the J-10 is surely not a Lavi captured by some Chinese (or secretly delivered by Mossad to China), given to Russian aerospace technicians, which developed the J-10 from it ! …. that’s pure nonsense and if You are able to understand the arguments given by crobato and others especially regarding the aerodynamic differences between the Lavi and the J-10 You would know what we mean.

…. so why this useless discussion ???

No man you are wrong, first we are not talking about subjectivity or reliability, we are talking what is the Russian opinion about the J-10 and you forget also that the Russians did develop that aircraft too, it is not the same with a German or French or Brazilian or what ever the source because the Russians are already acknowledged as have worked on the J-10 program.

I do not care you think the links are false or unreliable, i am only interested in what the vast majority of Russian articles claim about the J-10.

And that’s once again the point !! Not the number of links or “sources” is important but the quaility and even if the Russians tell there that they are the co-developer of the J-10 that need not to be true !

I’m not denying that the Russians gave great help on that project especially as You point out it’s powered by a Russian engine.

I’m angry about that always repeated false argument that the J-10 is a Lavi clone … and that false statement doesn’t become reality only because some Russian links say so !

I think You still don’t understand and that’s always the problem with YOU !!

Well if you want more sources here we go

    http://www.airwar.ru/enc/fighter/j10.html

    http://www.bestavia.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=552&Itemid=37

If You like You could give us hundreds of these links that won’t change anything. Only because something is written on an obscure Russian internet-page that doesn’t make it true !!!!

As such I only can quote:

We do not look for quantity but quality

If I would write on such a page that there are Martians on moon or that the MiG-25 is the ancestor of the F-15 … or the Concorde a clone of the Tu-144 … or was it vice versa ?? … that won’t change anything on the facts.
You could find any argument in the internet for any opinion You would like to proof and that’s the reason why internet sources are only treated with care as a real “source” especially in science !

It’s the main reason why internet sources are so difficult to judge for their credibility: The quantity of sources isn’t a relevant argument for reliability; only the quality is. One quality source can disprove a hundred false internet links. And as there are hardly any open or official sources on the PLA, the best way is to rely on Chinese articles, pictures, and posters as they are closest and are best positioned to the actual thing … and surely not a Russian (or an US page like FAS.org). Especially this is the main problem with the J-10: Once one argument or “fact” is published in the net, several other “sources” only copy and paste these facts without any reflection what might be possible or true. … I think that has been written here already several times !

    Cheers, Deino 😉
