Yet in spite of billions on R&D being spent China still is unable to produce a decent modern jet engine.

Overall correct, but what’s not “decent” on the WS-10-series ?? … at least all Chinese Flankers (sans the operational J-15s) are powered by them.

Can we come back to the main topic please ??? … by the way the PLANAF has received the first two KJ-500H AEW/C as well as two Y-8Q ASW-types.

    Oh boy…

I hope Deino doesn’t stumble on this thread. Otherwise I won’t be able to watch the gory curb stomp that will surely follow.

No, I will simply ignore it !

By the way … can we come back to the original topic: the J-10 and it’s so far failed export success ??? … a discussion on US vs Russian engines, a hypothetical super-hyper MiG-23XYZ is interesting but quite annoying here.

BY the way In a few Pakistani forums there’s an ongoing discussion … I don’t know to rate it but my feeling tells me its more wishful thinking about a soon to be signed contract for the J-10.

Anyone here with more information ??

That is older version at 12,700kg. one tonne above it 13.7ton thrust for J-10B.

Are You sure … as far as I know, the main difference between the standard and series III is a higher reliability and not a higher thrust !

FSUE “CIAM” has issued the assessment of stability of AL-31FN series-3 engine at the operation time to first maintenance of 750 hours / 1000 flight cycles on the customer’s J-10 aircraft.

It also appears to have larger dielectric fin caps – and wider chord rudders…….

Unless it’s an optical illusion and the rudders are just hard over ??

    Ken

Yes indeed … one other option could be the rumoured MLU-upgraded J-11D prototype !

Anyone noticed the wingtip pylons on the J-11 on the left ??

It’s no longer the typical J-11B wingtip pylon for the PL-8 but the old and new Su-27SK and J-16 pylon for the R-73 and also the latest PL-10 … so what J-11 is this ???

    Thanks for the translation TR1

I am not sure. Venezuela is really struggling at the moment. Peru could be a candidate. Argentina is also struggling, and has never operated Russian fighter aircraft before. They have been looking at FC-1 recently. Colombia could be an option I guess…

I agree that Flanker is an overkill for most countries. A MiG-35 would be enough for most of them, except Argentina and Brazil, who could be interested in the extra range and payload.

… agreed and therefore I wouldn’t take this statement that talks with three potential buyers are advanced with a lot of salt, it’s simply unrealistic.

I don’t think J-10 will fit into the 2 tier fighter model for Pakistan Airforce. They need to replace all low/medium tech fighters with JF-17s and build-up the F-16 force with 2nd hand and new acquisitions until they can identify a long term replacement for F-16s. J-10 is not a next gen replacement for Block 52s.

The problem however – but that’s more a PAF-related thing – is that the ZDK-03 does not fit to the Erieye, the new AH-1Z does not fit to the Z-10 … or better to say the PAF would save a lot of money if they could or would concentrate on a single purpose-single type fleet but the problem here is as long as no additional F-16C/Ds, more Erieyes and more AH-1Zs were available, they have to look for an alternative … especially if maybe someone else pays for them !

Hi guys … an indeed interesting topic.

Overall I think all points – but one – were already mentioned:

    – those countries who can purchase Western types, they decide usually for new, used and/or refurbished F-16s … or even the Gripen.
    – those who only can or want to buy a non-Western type have either a too limited budget (so they purchased still the last F-7 types or now they consider the JF-17) or they take the MiG-29 (not that many to admit as mentioned) or even if possible the Su-27/-30.
    – also worth, what’s the performance, reliability, maintenance and even more customer service … we really don’t know officially !
    – is or was the J-10A already cleared and offered for export ?? … or are these only rumours ?

My final missing point is however a PLAAF-/politically related: If we look at the production rate during the final years, it was – at least as long as the F-7/J-7 were still on production – quite limited so that all J-10s (and here it were not more than 1 1/2 or 2 Regiments) produced went directly to the PLA. My question now is: was the production rate only so low due to the fact that the J-7 line was still open, since there was no demand on the A-model or since it was simply not for sale ??? … we need to consider that the improved B-model was also under test and I can think that most potential customers – if interested in a new type – would only take the best version !?

    Errrr… Peru…? Argentina…? who else?

Hmmm … To admit I don’t know what country could be interested in earnest ???

Surely Argentina might be “interested” as much as I’m interested in a Porsche or an Audi Q7 but I simply cannot afford it. As such what countries could be true possibilities esp. after Brasil dropped out ?

Peru ? maybe … maybe indeed Venezuela …

all others – esp. in South America – have only to replace smaller types so that a Su-30 is some sort of overkill. I can’t think that Kuba will buy a few …
