… WS-15 (Emei for J-20) completed testing in Tibet.

China recently tested what is believed to be the WS-10 (Taihang) and WS-15 (Emei) engines which the carrier-borne aircraft J-15 and the stealth fighter J-20 are likely to be equipped it.

Test Flight Center of Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) successfully completed the first takeoff-and-landing test flight of the fighter planes recently on the plateau in Qinghai province, the Voice of China reported. This test flight is the first high altitude test for two types of engines in installed status.

During the test flight, the test flight team overcame adverse factors such as high altitude anoxia and strong ultraviolet irradiation, avoided the impact of thin air, low pressure and small inlet flow on the engines, and successfully completed such tests as the power start tests on the plane and ground, the “cold” and “hot” starts and continuous starts of the engines, the acceleration and deceleration performance, and the performance quality inspection of afterburner, according to the report.

To admit I don’t think that the WS-15 was actually tested as a full engine, maybe some certain components, but surely not a complete engine … and why then in Tibet !??

To admit it’s strange that You post an old (dated 7. Sept.) report – to be precise a part of a report – with only a statement from a solely definitely pro-Russian party !! 🙁

If You look and read a bit further here: http://www.focus.de/politik/ausland/ukraine-krise-bnd-bericht-ueber-russen-raketen-und-mh17-abschuss_id_4136297.html dated today from 19:20 h (just scroll down a bit) it looks completely different.

    =

19:20 hours: Almost nine weeks after the crash of the Malaysian passenger plane MH17 the evidence that Boeing is shot down by pro-Russian separatists condense. As defined in the “BILD” newspaper, citing the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) Contrera, Russia to an air-defense system of type SA 22 PANTSIR S-1 in the Eastern Ukraine have stationed. The information is from thus a request of the left defence expert Alexander Neu to the Federal Government. For reasons of national security, the reports were been held back but so far by the secret service of the Bundestag. The “image” newspaper wants to still got insight into the sensitive documents. Therefore, the missile defense SA22 on the 15th and on August 25 in the Ukraine was detected. Since this weapon system do not belong to the holdings of the Ukrainian army, it was probably Very much in the hands of the separatists, concludes the BND. (Translation via BING

and what that image + link of the SA-3 will say I really don’t know !?

    Deino

PS: I really don’t know whom to trust (esp. since the Bild is really nor a reliable source in itself!) … but just to give a more complete picture from this strange Mr. Neu from “Die Linken”.

The best information coming out is that Chinese aviation is still having trouble maintaining quality control and reliability with their domestic engines. Reports continue to surface that Chinese manufacturers still have problems producing high quality turbine blades. And blades must still be imported from Russia.

Going beyond generic responses can you shed light on these persistent problems?

China is attempting to manufacture super alloy turbine blades but continues to suffer reliability and quality problems. Tracking China’s supplies of rhenium — a rare metal that increases the temperature-resistance of turbine blades — is an indication of China’s progress in designing and producing an engine that can handle higher internal temperatures, for increased performance and durability.

However, a comprehensive analysis by experts from the China Gas Turbine Establishment, which played a major role in designing the WS-10 engine, still complains about engine reliability and other persistent problems. And this is after China has dropped a ton of money on domestic engine development.(#)

If China is having trouble at this level of engine development how can they expect to compete with the next generation of so called “adaptive cycle” engine prototypes being developed in the west today?

    @ Roovialk !

Please don’t get me wrong, and first of all no-one denies that there have been (indeed severe) problems, that there are (maybe) still some and even more that the Chinese industry is still behind (see WS-13 issues, …) but also in mass-producing these items, but the point is, that most of these reports, which point out only the problems – especially Pinkov – are either old and dated, they are biased (esp. Pinkov, who is more than well known for his connections to the Russian-establishment … not really an independent and reliable source, especially if constantly proven wrong !) and even more they simply ignore the fact that there are hundreds of WS-10A operationally, that beside the J-15 no current serial-Flanker (J-11B/BS, J-16) is flying on a Russian engine.

YES, that does not mean that there were issues during the development of this engine, that there might be issues in producing them (we indeed do not know the percentage of useable parts to waste, which was reportedly quite high early in the production phase) and that it might in fact has a “different” TBO in comparison to other similar engines. But the fact alone that so many fighters are operational with this engine is proof enough that this engine is mature enough to be used operationally, that it operates save enough and the desired performance.

As such I really don’t know where Pinkov gets his information (other from his Russian friends) from that the PLAAF / PLANAF is loosing patience and want to replace the engine with a Russian engine again. This is simply plain wrong.

Otherwise You speak of reliable sources and recent reports (#) … could You please provide a link for that ??

Moving on, what light can you shed on this story? Looks like that engine issue for Chinese aircraft has still not been resolved.

    “…Engine issues mean China can’t power J-15, J-16 fighters

China is unable to produce advanced fighters such as the J-15 and the J-16 in large numbers because it lacks the proper engines to power the aircraft, according to the Moscow-based Military-Industrial Courier on Sept. 8.

According to Kanwa Defense Review, a magazine operated by military analyst Andrei Chang, also known as Pinkov, ….

Like “Rii” always said, Pinkow is an idiot (to be honest) and often sounds more like a spokesman or salesman fed by the Russian export agency than an expert on Chinese aviation matters !

… China is not even capable of producing J-11B fighters due to problems with Shenyang Liming Aircraft Engine Company’s WS-10A engine. Similar problems led the People’s Liberation Army Navy to cancel their plans to install the WS-10A in the J-15, a carrier-based fighter designed to serve aboard the Liaoning, China’s first aircraft carrier.

Both the PLA Air Force and Navy Air Force have asked to replace the WS-10A with the more reliable Russian-built AL-31F engines, the magazine stated. China is unlikely to get enough AL-31F engines to power all of its J-15 and J-16 fighters when production starts on the aircraft however. The only option left for China is to stop producing more advanced fighters until it is capable of designing the engines the aircraft need.”

    From China Times 09-09-2014

Sources from the Chinese aviation industry told the Military-Industrial Courier that the PLA is losing its patience with the WS-10A engines. Without proper competition among state-run engine producers, the source said that China is unable to design the engines it needs to power its new aircraft. The Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China suggested that the PLA Air Force use domestic engines anyway to boost the economy.[/

Yes for sure. That’s exactly the reason why already more than 6 full Regiment / Brigades are using WS-10A-powered J-11B and BH. Esxactly the same reason why all other – even AL-31F-powered Regiments receive additional WS-10A-powered J-11BS and that’s for sure the reason why since the begin of the J-16 program all manufactured J-16s are WS-10-powered !
YES, the J-15 is currently the solely AL-31F-powered Chinese Flanker-version, but I think it’s so far simply a measure to be sure with a new type during its initial test for a so far unknown field (carrier aviation). Also as demonstrated by prototype ‘555’ both engines are interchangeable and I’m sure later on we will also see WS-10H-powered serial J-15.

By the way I’m sure given his standing and acceptance within the Chinese media, press and even more military I’m sure he was briefed on this information right from the PLANAF’s Headquarters. :highly_amused:

Upppsss .. it’s getting really interesting, since now the original Chinese text / report was found and it looks / sounds completely different. As such a few members at different forums are quite upset about the English version (for example see at the CDF (see http://www.china-defense.com/smf/index.php?topic=6582.msg243756#msg243756) and SDF.

The original source never said or hinted the two died testing J15. What it did say:
-This is to honour the long time contribution from this unit
-Two pilots from this unit died on their job
-This unit made great contribution to J-15 carriar program.

In fact, the word 圆满 indicate that the two deaths were not related to J15, at least not at sea. Otherwise it cannot be called 圆满。

    Here’s a post by ‘cmdjing’

God damn reporters are lazy/******* incompetent, particularly when they don’t actually speak the language.

    http://news.sina.com.cn/c/2014-08-27/175430753133.shtml

The original news article in Chinese is here. It mentions two “comrades” gave their lives, but does not identify them as pilots. The video goes into detail as to who was given commendations.

    … also from ‘yexu’:

This is fake news. Actually the unit citation said two test pilots had died in the history of this unit. The accidents actually happened in the 1990’s. They have nothing to do with the carrier. It’s a case of poor understanding of Chinese, and a classic case of how rumors and fake news spread these days, everyone quoting everyone else. Another recent example was the alleged failure of the Wu-14 supersonic flight test.

Giving a hint that the Chinese editor for the English version is simply faking – for whatever reason – the news:

Yes, I do mean that. The original Chinese is quite clear. The English services of Chinese news organizations are notoriously poor.

From former test pilot Xu Yongling, the two test pilots died three years ago, had nothing to do with the carrier. Probably test flying the J11BS?

In interesting report was published today in the official media about the honor President Xi Jinping has given the crew of the first aircraft carrier-based fighter jet … and the admitted loss of two pilots during the test campaign.

    President Xi bestows military honors

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping has signed an order of commendation to honor the crew of the first aircraft carrier-based fighter jet.

According to the commendation order, a test squadron of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force were granted a honorary title for successfully conducting the take-off and landing tests of J-15 fighters on the Liaoning, China’s sole aircraft carrier.

The order spoke highly of the squadron in the exploration and development of the J-15 fighter jet. Two test pilots of the squadron sacrificed their lives during the tests.

The commendation order urged all military personnel to learn from the squadron in cultivating combat-ready awareness, honing their skills and rooting out undesirable work styles.

Dai Mingmeng, the first J-15 pilot to have conducted a successful take-off and landing on the Liaoning, was granted a honorary title individually.

One unit and another 24 individuals were also awarded by commendation orders sighed by Xi,, in his role of chairman of the Central Military Commission, on Wednesday.

PLA Unit 91053 was awarded a third-class merit citation for outstanding contribution to major tasks.

Zheng Hui, senior engineer with the Headquarters of the General Staff; Zheng Yonghuang, chief engineer of the PLA 63620 Unit; Wang Hongli, commanding officer of the PLA 92474 Unit; Zou Jianguo, a pilot; and Cai Hongxia, chief head nurse of the 261 Hospital psychiatry department, were awarded first-class merit citations.

Liu Xiaoming, a late military instructor at PLA Information Engineering University was posthumously awarded a first-class merit citation.

Six individuals were awarded second-class merit citations and another 12 were awarded third-class merit citations.

Would be interesting to know under what circumstances this happened, what aircraft was lost or if the pilots were killed not in a crash …
