Hi Speedy, another photo for you : ‘A’ Flight’s aircraft. Equipped with F.B.1’s in May 1953 , part of the ‘Fassberg’ Wing , 2nd.Tactical Air Force, Germany, they are carrying the Fassberg lightning flash on the nose and tip tanks.
Apart from WK413 B Z (nearest camera) other representative a/c were WE349B F and WE363 B A Regards, Brian S.
Nice photo. Thanks Brian. I think they are Venoms, but my uncle flew them too, and he was in Fassberg for a while.
Cheers,
Justin.
Thanks very much Phil !
My uncle had a few goes in that one in Jan ’54.
Regards,
Justin.
Firebar is certainly tenacious, but seems driven by some kind of brainwashing!
I’ve only played with long range missiles like Pheonix in simulators (toy simulators!). I found it useful as a pursuit weapon only. Head on it is too easy to avoid. I had to use two at a time anyway, because the first one is easily avoided. The avoidance manouevre made the second one more successful. I would imagine Pheonix would be useful against incoming cruise missiles.
I think Firebar’s misuse of superlatives like ‘Unsurpassed’ has got us all wound up. Firebar has never heard of Spitfires and Hurricanes and big air battles where interception capabilities were proven. If we ignore Firebar it will go away.
well we know that the JSF will be taking over the harriers in a few years time but really what is your opinion about the aircraft and will it meet our needs (RAF)?
please i woukld like to know ur opinions and more about the aircraft !!?
thanks
JSF worries me. It seems a lot of us are putting too many eggs in one potentially fragile, expensive basket. The lift fan version looks frightening, but it appears to work so far. I am pleased to see the UK carriers have some CTOL potential. I just hope we have a ‘Plan B’ in case something is wrong with JSF.
I think the biggest air battle ever was the Battle of Britain. Please correct me if I am wrong. Spitfires and Hurricanes won this battle. They must be the greatest. I have to place the Mosquito up there too.
Edgely Optica…. and… :diablo::dev2::diablo::dev2: MiG-25 !
I also found myself re-reading the book, Ken! 🙂
Sharkey Ward is really one of the best tacticians. I am sure HE would want to know if he could spoof long range A2A. He was one of the chaps sitting in the firing line. Is it perhaps the case that long range A2A missiles are better for fighter to stike aircraft and AEW engagements, rather than fighter to fighter engagements?
You are being a bit ingenuous about the F-15 engagements….. 😮
You should add “as long as the rules of engagement were followed and the F-15s were not allowed to use their radar and long-range AAMs“
Ken
Have you read Sharkey Ward’s book, Ken? He quotes a result of 7 to 1 against the F-15s. Elsewhere in the book he also mentions something else special about the Harrier…. the hot nozzles are under the wing and mask the IR from certain aspects.
So how would you say what harrier was most capable in the A2A area in the end? The Sea Harrier FA2 or the AV-8B Harrier II+ with the radar?
Read Sharkey Ward’s book. His Sea Harriers went up against F-5 Agressors and decisively beat them. Then F-15s had a go, and were beaten too.
I remember early F-18s had disgraceful results up against F-5 Agressors. This was mainly due to radar failures, I think. Now Switzerland has Hornets replacing their F-5s, but are already looking around at other aircraft!
Of course Gripen is less capable than Eurofighter. Gripen NG is only a response to ‘market whims’, in my view. What could Eurofighter offer to countries like Norway, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, S. Africa, many others… that the existing Gripen wouldn’t satisfy…. possibly better?
[QUOTE=MattSoden;1290986]It’s a mean machine!
What is it about the Typhoon that gives you a good feeling? !!
QUOTE]
It doesn’t give me much of a good feeling. Taxpayers are the people who ultimately pay for these machines.
Eurofighter IS impressive, but I think Gripen is also impressive for a lot less dosh ! Lower running costs could mean pilots could be better trained in Gripen. I am not 100% sure of this, so I welcome comment from better informed contributors.
Air defence grey does it for me. Bare aluminium is nice too.
Since there appears to be no stopping the Firebar-MiG-25 romance, seems to me they should go and mate. May God bless the union with the patter of tiny little interceptors.
Everyone knows most pilots kept their hands firmly on the ejector for the few minutes they could sustain at m3, as the plexiglass began to melt along with other interesting and somewhat essential bits of the airframe…
Well, ejecting at that speed wouldn’t do the pilot much good! 400 knots is fast enough.
Hmmm…. :diablo::diablo::diablo: ‘Anyone want to chip in to buy Firebar a Mach 3 joyride in a MiG-25?….. :diablo::diablo::diablo: We could bribe the pilot to eject him/her/it at Mach 3 :diablo::diablo::diablo::D
