Rolls Royce Aero Engines are still British, I think.

I contacted Rolls Royce Heritage Trust some months ago to ask if they’d like someone (me) to get any Merlin stuff they had into CAD format. They replied that they already had this in-hand… in-house. Hopefully this means they may have the capability to supply new parts or even complete new engines at some time in the future.

Right now, I believe the best sources for parts and airworthy overhauls, are all in USA.

Here are a couple of photos of my grandfather, Victor Rance (the one with the gloves one), with some of his colleagues after Operation Tungsten. ‘Anyone know any of the other crew?

I was interested to learn more about the Barracuda, but I thought it look like it must have been a horrible thing to fly !

This is Spitfire GW668, and was sold recently by Jon Radford in Oxford to this new group. Jon kindly showed it to a friend of mine who was considering the purchase, and I tagged along. It was featured on Jon’s ‘Oxford Spitfires’ website, but I think that site is gone now. Anyway, the history is shown at the new website…

All Cessnas except the T-37, and…

Aero Vodochody L-29….. ‘can’t carry much or go very far…. Silly ‘T’ tail. Ironically it’s the world’s most popular jet trainer, but that’s just ‘cos it was selected as the standard jet trainer by almost all Warsaw Pact forces.

    The Hunter is FAB ! ! ! ! ! !

    Re:

    Naval Hawk
I do not see why the Hawk/Goshawk could be made into a viable lightweight carrier strike fighter.
Beginning with the Hawk 128, redesign:
-the fuselage with much greater use of composites to save weight
-uprate the engine, or indeed find a more powerful replacement
-use strengthened landing gear from T-45 Goshawk
-add the arrester hook from the T-45

I’d start with the Hawk 200 single seat, cos it could possibly accomodate the T-45 nose gear without the extra girth in the the forward fuselage the T-45 has. It has already been equipped with radar too, and might be able to carry more fuel.

Perhaps composites in the wing, but I’d keep the metal fuselage

Arrestor and airbrakes from T-45 are essential.

Don’t change the engine. Keep the fuel economy.

I don’t like the main gear of the T-45, cos it takes wing space that is used for weapon harpoints on later Hawks. It ought to be possible to make a more compact system even for navy operations.

    Any good?

    What do you think?

How do you think Aircraft Carriers could be sensibly better armed?

Someone who flew once said to me “There are two types of ships…. submarines and targets !”

It’s nice to hear others are concerned by this. Since the Harrier FA2 was taken of our RN carriers, they have had no carrier borne fighter cover!

I don’t know too much about this, but I am encouraged to see that the two carrier ordered for the Royal Navy will be able to accomodate the CTOL option. This means we are not putting all our eggs in the JSF STOVL basket at this stage. I’ve often wondered why we don’t go a little lower tech, and develop a new BAe ‘Navy’ Hawk…. a sort of hybrid of the 200 and the Goshawk. Single seat, one piece canopy with no frame so the pilot can see, Goshawk airbrakes, modify the Goshawk main landing gear to allow room for a wing hardpoint. This aircraft would be able to loiter without burning the huge amounts of fuel the JSF will. Keep the JSF for strike. The Hawk is for fleet defence and limited other roles.

Do we need carrier borne AEW aircraft? Perhaps the Navy Hawk radars linked up will do, but a small AEW aircraft might help…. low-tech Shorts Skyvan with a big fuel tank and a big radar !

    Cheers!

Creaking Door, Thanks for that info. ‘Measured’ is good enough, and 9.950″ sounds like it might be the real number anyway. A lot of things on the Merlin seem to be multiples of .025″ !

Chumpy, Thanks too. That clears up a mystery for me.

    Cheers,

    Speedy.

    Bend Radii

Does DTD390 ‘tin’ and L163 ‘tin’ allow the same bend radii? Where I work we don’t go tighter than 3T internal on L163, but I note some Spit drawings appear to show DTD390 bent at 2T internal.

Completely unrelated…. Does anyone know the exact big end to small end distance of the Merlin conrods? I want to make a rough kinematic model.

    Cheers,

    Speedy.
