Another visit to Cosford at the weekend and I had a look at AVOF. Seems the tail and top half of the fuselage have been painted brilliant white (gloss) and they’ve stopped just below the bottom of her windows, so it seems to tally with the picture of XM497. There’s a sign up saying work will be on-going to the end of August…Although still missing lots of external panels, flaps etc. Oh and she has no engines as the cowlings are off and you can see inside.

I muted the sound and played Sir William Walton’s Battle in the Air instead, much better!

I visited the new hangar at Cosford the first weekend it opened and personally for me I wasn’t sure what to make. It’s excellent that the aircraft are now under cover since a fair number were outdoors at Cosford for main years. Whatever your opinion to the theme and the presentation, all the aircraft are, by and large, placed in context by the displays material (and each other) and it tells a particular story.

I think it is the choice of design of hangar that has divided opinion as this thread shows. I can guess why the design was chosen since it is a landmark in everyway, whether you like it or not – without the aircraft – it is an impressive structure. For a National Exhibit I guess it was felt something dramatic was needed. But I do feel its design rather comprimises its ability to display aircraft. Its footprint is quite small and the side walls quite steep so the only way to display aircraft in addition to those on the ground is suspended from the ceiling and at “interesting angles”. The dispay of aircraft on the ground though is compromised by the way the walls taper in.

You can actually see the whole port side of the Valiant as you go in, and the front of the Vulcan but the Victor is fairly well obscured. Unfortunately I think the museum lost a trick by not carrying on the raised viewing area the whole length of the hangar since that would allow you to see the V-bombers from above. I like to photograph aircraft and I was a bit disappointed that Cosford promised to be the only place to see all three V-bombers together, but I had a hard time seeing them. I like a clean shot of an aircraft from nose to tail but for the V-bombers you just can’t do it.

I diid some panoramic photographs for my website at Cosford and they illustrate both points of view made in this thread:

I was at Duxford the other week and saw the aircraft more traditionally displayed in Airspace and comparing it to Cosford made me realise something – if you want to display aircraft for people to photograph then Airspace wins, if you want to display aircraft for people to say “wow” then Cosford wins. Unfortunately that won’t please everyone, but personally for me I prefer the more traditional approach at Duxford (and the original hangars at Cosford).

The attached pic is resized because of the upload size limits but I have it as a 2MB file and it is 2592 x 1944 pixels and is a good resolution. Can e-mail to you if this is any good.

Three Comets indoors – so Duxford, Cosford and I’m stuck for the other. I didn’t know another was undercover, where is she?

Today at Cosford – Sunday 10th December 2006

Went down to Cosford today on the news that the Comet was indoors.

On arrival saw the Varsity was still outdoors, but at least “our” side of the fence, so maybe she willl go indoors this week.

The Comet was inside, and receiving a much needed clean. They’ve removed her air-intake covers at the front so she looks a lot better than she outside.

Also, the other side of the Visitors Centre, on the concrete circle where the Trident used to sit, they’ve moved the Neptune, so you can see her as soon as you enter the visitors centre.

Are these items of any historic importance to a museum or restoration project should my colleague wish to donate them?

When I was at Cosford a couple of weekends ago, I asked if once she was inside she’d be repainted but the member of staff I spoke to said no. But that’s not an official statement.

It’s nice to see her painted in the colours of BOAC but she never flew in those colours, but still nice (since I think the other Comets in the UK Duxford, East Fortune and Bruntingthorpe are in Dan Air Colours).

So if she was repainted in RAF colours maybe she would be repainted as XM823, a reg code she did fly in for nine years. Wouldn’t it be good to see her in colours she actual flew in?

Yes the VC10 no longer has her wings or tail, these were chopped and scrapped. They did split her at a production joint so at least the fuselage wasn’t cut.

This is how I like to remember G-ARVM – pics on my website:

The Vulcan walk-through used to be in Hangar 1. It moved a few months back, I guess it’s gone into the Cold War Exhibit along with the complete Vulcan airframe?

This is the view to the left, so still lots of space.

Does anyone know, definitively, what’s coming inside?

The Neptune, Comet and Britannia are the three largest outside – are these coming inside?
