Well its standing at 24,100 not only that they have 38 more it makes me so angry that they think these prices are accepted as the normal not the unusual I mean 38 more then the rest beyond that such as pumas and the remainder of the lynx and not to mention the jags when they are finally phased out. Its strange that no one has tried to get one flying or at least bruntyfied if you know what I mean :dev2:

You said earlier aero commander that has been one of my dream aircraft for many years as it was one of the first I saw at an airshow, it is a beautiful aircraft and sadly forgotten. Heres another a bonanza with a butterfly tail and not forgetting the cessna 337, on e that I would or both though yet always overlooked is the 150 and 172, these are perhaps the most ubiquitous types which many a budding young pilot cut their teeth on and often discarded as not worthy of saving. So I’m in your camp on these and I have even looked at a queen air trust me they are out there

G-APNJ Cessna has been at newark for some years and came from Shoreham she was donnated from the aeronautical collage there and was brought to our attention by Tony Harmsworth of Aeroplane monthly fame. And she sits next to a Rallye and not far from a Dove and Heron, on the Aztec there was one saved and then let go by Midland air museum and it went to a paint ball site, I have no idea what state its in now though. You speak of other types I yern to save but alas they are not crowd pullers like the like of Sea Harrier or Jaguar and so on so they tend to be forgotten. We do have a few civvy types but they are outweighed by the military types. If they are donnated though we will consider them as a matter of course, great thread many thanks David Hibbert, Newark air museum acquisitions officer.

It has to be said I echo all of the above you should do cosford if you get the chance and try to keep an open mind with any museums way of preservation and display as sadly the former is sometimes more necessary than just display. I say that due to space always being a need but sometimes display has to take second place, though please understand that not all the small to medium museum collections are lucky enough to inherit old air force buildings or airfields that are intact though Elvington is one not been mentioned and that is worth a visit. How long have you got? I feel our list will give you two weeks at least of visits, though I would imagine time is tight for you, anyway enjoy where ever you go

And if you get the chance to go to newark just head down to midland air museum and Bruntingthorpe as well, oh and Norfolk and Suffolk at bungay all of the above are well worth a visit, oh and aeroventure at doncaster or the aeropark at east Midlands, is that enough or can we tempt you with some smaller ones. Sywell and the carpetbaggers both in Northamptonshire it depends how long you have really, but if you are going to newark let us know and we’ll see if we can make it a day to remember, like sitting in a Draken or the viggen or the vulcan and sea harrier or jaguar. I should stop now before I blow my own cover

You are so right I have first hand experience of this, we noticed a change when they stopped sending tenders to the museum thus denying us a fair crack of the whip to save something for the greater good. We don’t, that is the museums aim to make much out of the purchase other than growing the collections to save for future generations to marvel at. The only other monies we spend is on staff and maintenance of our charges, this is why we do what we do. I refer to all of the museums across the UK who are all registered charities so are bound by tight rules on cash being soent on their day to day running. I have been in this theatre of a hobby for 35 years and it still is unfair towards the people who matter the most, and thats the public. Not every one can get to the few big museums in the country and thats why museums like midland and Norfolk and Suffolk and north east and newark are so important. Each of those museums have in many cases rare and special airframes in their collection, and in many cases the big ones used to turn their noses up at those types. Well not anymore as its the smaller concerns are starting to lead the way in displaying and saving rare types, love the thread guys.

Still think the unit cost is far to high, bring back the harriers I say instead of wasting good money on an aircraft that can’t even carry an external war load, not mention the fact that it carries dead weight in the S/TOVL version. What a mess its totally been the wrong aircraft for the time. This is why political people should not be allowed to make decisions on our behalf.

Its a lot of money for a garden ornament or office, no museum will touch this sort of airframe at the bid that it stands at, which is £23,000 ish so far, so I then ask the question if the reserve is not met and it isn’t sold what then. Will they just scrap it or lower the limit, knowing how greedy they are at trying to get”tax payers” the best deal who knows. Wait a minute we in museums are tax payers and so are the people that support us, it seems a bit skewed if you ask me asking high prices for an airframe we “all” technically own and yet the likes of the big museums get free, its wrong I think.

What about the Bombay and Hendon, 0/400 Hydrabad HP 42 a real one off impressed into service, then the Scyla, and going back to earlier in the thread and in time if it wasn’t for any of the museums with keen and dedicated people who have vision then the Wallace would have been scrapped. But luckily those at Newark back in the sixties had the where with all to save it, and it was swapped with Hendon for a Gnat which didn’t come their way. There are many aitframes we could have should have but didn’t save, like the saunders roe princess though the work on such aircraft is a big undertaking so not practical. The venoms are light on the ground as well though again its the NF variant that seems to have survived and indeed the sea venom as well. I love threads like this as it exercises the mind and memory as well, heres another Albemarle and Hawker Nimrod yes a floatplane from a large family which came from the Fury biplane or the many Gloster types like Grebe and F9/40.
How many can we add to this now empty landscape of missing gems.

I would rather they kept the shed instead of “more” unrequired houses there’s too many houses already. And lets face it once the sheds gone its gone for good and history is irreplaceable.

Middle Wallop has the 3rd pre-production SA.341G Gazelle F-ZWRI (XW276) out on loan at Newark – not sure whether that counts as a prototype (3rd prototype etc.??)

Mr twin otter23 you have also forgotten the Rattler strike in the long and distinguished roll call of prototypes, although some one has also included the Ashton. I thought that was a test bed and if that is the case then what about the Canberra B]I]8 with the sapphire engines and the blue parrot nose in a nice gloss black finish.

It wouldn’t bother me if there was no connection with the museum or the area where they are based, what matters is that somebody has had the vision to save it anyway. If we all took the view that there should only be a connection with the area in which a museum is based then I doubt there would be half of the things in which we seek to save what ever the subject would be saved, in fact the world would be worse off. So hats off to all of those that take a chance on preservation.

Its a sign of the times and alas the lack of respect from all quarters, its about education and to that end what we have seen this weekend with the soil being brought to our shores for a special memorial garden, I hope will keep it at the fore and with luck might stop the bad people amongst us from doing such heinous things against the memory of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives. To them I will always give thanks for the freedom we all now enjoy and which was so hard fought for.
