Having been involved in various ways with aviation archaeology for thirty eight years I think I am well placed to distinguish between the “amateurs” and the “professionals”. Steve V and colleagues amateurs? Don’t think so, old chap. Some were doing this kind of work before some of those commenting were even born or out of their prams! π
I am not sure who were Steves colleagues were but describing Steve V as an amateur is like calling Barnes Wallis a dunce. The man rebuilts Spitfire’s from nothing, He’s a bloody genius. I understand he cut his teeth on recovery work.
Andy how did you record these early recoveries? Did anyone take picture’s or possibly film any of it. Would be great to see pics of some of the Battle of Britain stuff thats been recovered.
Or, for basic web re-sizing, use the Microsoft Powertoy Image resizer.
Google it and you will find it.

Sharing
Having been privileged to attend this recovery. Myself and the team realise that not everyone gets the opportunity to attend a recovery. We thought it would be a nice gesture to share some of the finds. There were some small items recovered like small bits of pipe and small fragments of skinning these cannot aid any restoration groups or museums but are still from a Corsair, If you have a genuine interest in this aircraft please PM me. If you send an A4 stamped addressed envelope I will send you a piece. There are a limited number so its first come first served. I will post list of the members(user names only) who receive pieces on the recovery page so itβs all above board.:)
I might add you will be asked to make a declaration saying you will not sell these artifacts.
Dont you just love the forum, its just like the predictive text on my phone. You can really get some people going. Wish i had as many bits when i go fishing!!!:D
Figher Ace if you were as good at fishing as you are at recovering aircraft you would hold the British record for the biggest fish LOL:diablo:
There you go merkle, he’s got one or two lying about according to an earlier post on another topic. Make him an offer:)
I have seen them π
thanks ever so much for that, i just didnt think to go to that scrap yard called “Merlins are us “”:D
cor whilst i am, at it can i buy a complete He111 fora quid, heard they are going cheep in the costa del sol, and merlins and all this wartime junk ,people just cant seem to shift it, bloody inundated with all this spitfire rubbish,:diablo: π :p
just as if
You would surprised what can be picked up from scrap dealers, some engines are not expensive especialy radials, I have seen several running examples for under Β£1000. I once imported 15 meteors from the Netherlands for under Β£500each.
but ,if you knew me i am one of the most modest,un greedy kind of man,I am just so frustrated after spending on and off since the age of 14 years old (now 36Y/O) researching franticly in my hobby of aviation archaeology to find just 1 ,only 1 engine as my dream is to do one up to running standard, doesnt have to be a merlin, a radial would have been nice ,but i must be the biggest loser in the game as all these years i have nothing to show for all the hard work i have put in, purely for the love of it,so the last thing i am is greedy, just frustrated, and now own a new magnetometer ,so trying to improve my chances,I believe that items found in a certain area (Belong) in that area as it is History from the area they are found, all i am after is a engine to rstore I cant afford to buy such a beast so i have to hunt for them, even if they exist, would love a wright cyclone more than anything, old herc engine to big a thirsty and complicated, thats all dennis,so if by helping groups who are searching for a big cache of parts a engines and i got one i would be over the moon, even if it was 50 of them, etc, sorry t sound greedy ,but just drasticly clinging on to my dream, which the way its going will never happen ,but cant be put down for trying
all the best
Chris C:D
Hello Chris I agree you must be very unlucky to search for so long and find nothing. When i spoke to you the other day I thought you were already onto a good dump? and several aircraft. If you need a good digger driver i can recomend Fighter Ace i have seen him in action and he’s a Pro, good luck searching.
“Over 90 pictures took two hours to resize them”
There are programs that will do that pronto. Photoshop being one of them. Set up a new folder with a copy set of your pics, record an “Action” resizing and saving the files, pick the folder and walk away. leaves more time for important things like browsing through this forumn!
Thanks for that I am using photshop 7 i might be a bit thick can you take me through it step by step, I cannot find record an action on the toolbar? would certainly save loads and loads of time.
cheers
Graham
Its a tricky question!
I dont know how many hours the aircraft being sold have remaining, but that should influence matters.
I dont believe an airworthy Vampire/Venom is worth more than about Β£60K stg, possibly less. So the equation becomes one of:
Approx Β£60K – Cost to put the aircraft through a permit renewal = True value.
I dont think its high – that said, I would love to see more Vampires and Venoms back in the air, so lets hope the right buyer is out there!
Bruce
60K – permit renewal about 3K then LOL π I think there might be a bargain, how many people have the cash to keep one flying and if they do there are more desirable aircraft to spend your money on.
Bruce what effect does 5 years outdoors have on a wooden Vampire if its not maintained? There used to one at Dunkerswell Devon in quite good nick but outside, after 5 years it was a wreck, looked ok but was rotten.
There was a few large bits of the smashed engine not shown in the pics, generally radial engines dont go into the ground to well like inline engines, especally when fixed to such a strong wing section
From the start we was not expecting trailer loads from the magnetometer reading, but given the rarety of the aircraft over here any find was interesting and of significance.
Oh, Nice pics graham you better get it charged up ready, the next site to investigate before summer is over is a nice bailout mosquito FB. This will reviel a pair of merlins i recon at 12ft and few bits for your project, no undercarrage on this one sorry so you will have to keep looking and this time i wont be driving the digger!!!:D
Shame about the digger you did a good job. Over 90 pictures this time took two hours to resize them LOL:) Fighter Ace check your email mate;)
Graham was there any parts of the engine as I notcied the darker colored earth?
Hello Peter
There was one small piece of and engine head as far as i know, there was none of the normal smell of fuel, the dark patch was the remains of corroded alloy.
The condition of some of the finds are interesting cosidering the ground they were found in.
Peter the pieces recovered were we believe thrown back into the hole after the original week long recovery and probably items scattered around the field, it could be they were thrown clear by the explosion escaping the impact and therefore mainly in pretty good condition, just a theory. Of coarse the US manufactured aircraft had allot of anodised parts which also helps them stay in good condition.
Well done to you and your colleagues Graham, keep up the good work. All the best, Bex
Thanks Bex but its not really down to me I just take the pictures.
Hello
Dave Glaser was a good friend of mine before he passed away. Here is a link to lots of info and pictures

Enjoy
You can do allot with a Meteor and they are a fraction of the price of a Merlin. A could runner will be around the Β£3K mark. I only have one left and i am keeping it for our next project. There was a place in Scotland that was selling them. check out this link:)
