Ive bought instruments off Graham and Id say hes an honest chap, the same applies to another gent on this forum. Ok so he made a slight marketing faux pas, however, the question marks and his wording showed he didnt intend to rip anyone off.

Now, Im not aiming for brownie points, future discounts etc etc etc etc, but I have to ask this, of all other Evil Bay items we discuss on here and we’ve REALLY slated a few on here since I joined last November, cant we cut Graham some slack? Bex

Thanks for putting this issue in perpective, where do I send the cheque? LOL seriously thanks!

    They arent Vampire either!

They look like elevator tips, but no idea what from.

Mark made a valid point above – Ebay do frown on items that use other things to describe them, when they have no relation to that item. It is something they have been clamping down on recently, so dont get caught!

At one aerojumble, I lost count of the number of things that were advertised as Spitfire. The one item I saw that was Spitfire, wasnt advertised as such, and the seller ad no idea what it was! Bargain!!:diablo:

    Bruce

There’s a good point, how many people find bargains among incorrect listings???? no one feels sorry for the seller or complains about an incorrect description when they get a bargain, sounds like double standards to me. If we are going to set ourselves up as 100% honest all of the time then we should always imform the seller when he’s got a valuable item.
OK I am very very sorry for using the Word Spitfire in the title and making a wopping £12.99 less ebay fees less paypal fees less what i paid for the parts in the first place, oh yes and wages for wrapping and listing and posting, and i promise never ever to do it again OK?

I’m sorry if you feel that I was taking a pot shot at you but I don’t agree with putting unrelated words into the title. You’ve freely admitted that it’s NOT Spitfire, and credit to you for not trying to actually sell it to people as such as many traders would do, but it’s an annoying sales tactic to deliberately mislead people in the title.

Unfortunately eBay is very competitive and the fees horrendous if everybody stopped using the word Spitfire it would be great but unfortunately it’s a key word and gets hits, simple but sad fact of life old chap. My feedback speaks for itself. If you want to get annoyed about something, find something worth getting anoyed about.

I’m sure you wouldn’t like it if you were looking for parts, and clicked on an auction titled “Rolls Royce Meteor parts” only to find yourself looking at bits from a 1.1 Fiesta engine…

Quite the contrary, i find it very funny reading some of the descriptions, I just adapt my searches the best I can to find what i am looking for.

I did chuckle Graham when I saw the title and the rest. I understand where you are coming from money wise, but it was not apparent to me that they were not being touted as such…..I scanned the photo shot and went….ahhhh Vampire Fin tops…not Spitfire and moved on. Dont think you need to be quite so grumpy old chap…life is too short and there is much worse stuff to worry about IMHO….keep smiling one and all 🙂

I’ll try not to be so grumpy LOL its just some folks take cheap shots, its only a bit of harmless marketing to get people looking, its a jungle out there.;)
I wish i knew they were Vampire tips would probably have made twice what they did, I’ll be your best mate if you let me know next time LOL:)

Then why put “SPITFIRE???” in the listing title?

I put Spitfire in the description because of their nice elliptical shape, I also put THEY ARE NOT SPITFIRE and they sold for £12.99 if you have a problem with that tough. Lots of people like to paint stuff like this with nose art and for that they are perfect. we also added part numbers, anyone who knows anything knows this is not a Spit number in addition we have 100% positive feedback with hundreds of satisfied customers. I find it amazing that some people have enough time on their hands to take petty pot shots at traders who try hard to be open, honest and offer a good service.
I do try and make money obviously, the last time I looked that’s what makes this country tick and every other country for that matter. I am not rich I live in a terraced house and own a plastic Spitfire and have a full time job WOW I am really getting rich.
Constructive comments I am always grateful for and always post corrections as for petty snipes; sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.

Thanks to all reading the forum. The BBC points west carried the story in the TV news tonight, also Radio Bristol this morning. I must admit i am a bit overawed at the response from all the media coverage. It was never my intention to attract publicity, but i am eternally glad that my efforts have given 3 young aircrew some recognition for the sacrfice the made for us. As you can imagine there is still much work to do cleaning and identifying parts. Bristol aero heritage are comming to visit me on Sunday to veiw the wreckage, it is hoped that they will exhibit some of the parts at Kemble as part of a Bleheim exhibition so that they can be enjoyed by all.

Just as an aside could any forum readers continue to help??? R3912 appears to have had battle damage repairs carried out at some point? would any body be able to point me in the right direction to find a photo of this Aircraft either with 13 OTU or with other squadrons since its issue, as you can imagine this would be the “icing ” on the cake. I am hoping to get some more pictures posted on the Spitfire spares site ASAP.

This story relates to my previous post on the day of the dig here is the link to those pictures, just follow the link once on the site. We are excavating a mossie tomorrow and with permission I will be posting pics of that dig. Will post a link when its done. Hoping to visit Archy Boy this weekend to help claen up the Blenheim and will add pictures of it when its been cleaned up.
    ENJOY:) http://www.spitfirespares.com/

Driving a Spit rev counter from a Meteor

One part of My MKVIII Replica i want to keep as original as possible is the cockpit. The rev counter was a challenge and after allot of help from Merlin Pete we seem to have cracked it, thanks Pete!!:D
The meteor has an electric generator to drive the rev counter, the original Spit was of coarse mecanical. Pete told me that the original rev drive ran off the cams at a 4:1 reduction, ie 1/4 engine speed. So I neede a 4:1 reduction gearbox that would fit the meteor drive for the Rev electrical generator. Tall order!!!! I have a few generators that work the opposite way they convert mecanical drive from the merlin into electrical drive, out of curriosity i took one apart, what a result they contain a 4:1 reduction gear box. Having remove the armature, I connected the mechanical drive to the rev counter and gear box and put an electric drill on the gear box. Hey presto it worked!;) One problem the meteor rotates in the opposite direction to the Merlin, thats when luck was really on side for a change, the rev counter works quite happily regardless of which way the gear box spins. I guess they designed them that way for different handed engines, I know this kind of rev counter was used in loads of other RAF types with different engines. All I have to do is connect the gearbox shaft to the shaft driving the electrical generator in the meteor 😮

As much as I wish I has the money myself, I would love to see a project like this donated to the RAAF Museum so they could finish it as the one and only RAAF Hurricane V7476. Oh well one day it may happen.

I wish i could afford to donate it, you have to be a rich man to donate something like this. I have decided to part with the Hurricane after allot of thought. We have bitten off more than we can chew. To do it justice its needs an owner with the facilities and finance to complete it. We simply don’t have the expertise or time available or finace for that matter to do it properly. With all the parts we have we could put it together to look good but would have to take alot of short cuts and thats not going to do it justice. I am open to part ex offers.:) I have a list of the bits available and will be posting pics of everthing when i get time.

Sounds like it’s coming together well..

..So it is able to stand on it’s u/c without the wings attached then? (someone was obviously clued up enough to make the unit a bit more practical to transport by road than the genuine article)

(Graham don’t know where you are situated but Shuttleworth collection’s MkV is hors de combat with an engine rebuild– if you get finished this year you might be able to recoup some of your costs by having a static display there…. These days they seem to be a bit more adventurous… They even let those noisy smelly jets display sometimes…..)

    Dave

Well we had to modify it once again to get it to stand on its legs without the wings, basically some cutting. I tried to buy some electric actuators from the US last night but they won’t ship to the UK, they quoted $285 for the pair, If I was in the US, the same spec in the UK was £700 whats that all about???LOL

We hope to complete all mechanical and structural work in the next six weeks, but will still have to paint. The entire aircraft has to be stripped and re-painted not sure how long that will take. It has been painted several times for different jobs.
We are hoping to attend some events at the tail end of summer. Next year we will tour as many shows as possible and even possibly some steam and car rallys. We are also going to make it available for private hire to individuals and in these situations will offer prop runs and short taxi runs, if a suitable area is provided and H&S can be satisfied.
Be a great Birthday present to wake up and look out your window at a Spitfire parked on the lawn!!LOL
Thats the reason i have spent so much making it portable and easy to set up. I have lugged her all over the country and it takes a good six hours to put together in stock form if everything goes right and thats without an engine.
Shuttleworth sounds interesting, when is it?

    Thanks Stuart

Have just looked at your Spit WOW, makes mine look like a poor effort, just wish i had the skills to make something like that. I did consider having the wings in racks down either side of the trailer but the main issue with this is fitting the wings once on site. It takes at least three people and a loader and even then its a tricky job lots of blood sweat and tears, and requires a perfectly flat working area. With the wings folded they can be lowered into position and locked in place with bolts. I am considering using electric actuators to lower and raise them, or possibly the hydraulic pump on the engine. I have the hinges worked out, the wing will fold almost exactly in half after being raised to the vertical position. As the wing mounted rad cowlings are not in use I will simply unbolt them so that the top half of the wing will lie flush to the lower wing.
The Spit will load backwards onto the trailer with a chaeel running the full ength for the tail wheel. The tail wheel will locate in the channel and the winch will pull it onto the trailer backwards. The main wheels will only have a short channel at the rear of the trailer and will be locked in place by raising the ramps.
Did you make the side cowlings? could you make me some to replace the firbre glass around the exhaust stubbs??

Just found this should be perfect for lifting the wings

Apparently from what i have read, that although the Camel was an extremely manuverable aircraft, the stick controls were reversed in certain situations ie (up was down and left was right) ,due the massive torque caused by the prop. I hope the chap makes a full recovery you have to admire his nerve in creating and flying such an early piece of technology.

I have to say it was great fun. Watching all that history emerging was awesome. I dug a Spitfire PRU a few years ago and after a load of work and expence we ended up with a bucket full. 67 MU did a real job on it because it crashed due to engine failiure and the Pilot bailed out. That sort of put me off and with all the other things i have going on, its something i didnt pursue. This had really given me the bug and i am hoping for get a few more invites. Will be updating the site with pictures of the wreckage cleaned up.
Recovery is not really represented on my site and its something I am keen to expand so if anyone pictures etc of crash sites that have excavated and want to share I’ll upload them.
