Meteor
Thanks for the info, I might try on some of the military vehicle forums. Luckily the MkVIII has two rad cowlings, but i really want to run it without the wings on for short periods, havent got room to fit wings:) in the workshop. I was thinking of a large header tank in the rear fus with connections to rads in the wings for running at full power. Just need something that will fit inside the MKVIII rad cowlings.
Piston
I think i got the wrong end of the stick, I thought it was shown because it was claiming to be a Merlin and wasnt. It looked like the real thing to me and I wanted to know what was wrong with it.
Can you explain why Meteor pistons are much deeper than the Merlin? also why they have a different ring arrangement.
Piston?
I presume this isnt a merlin Piston? can some explain if thats the case whats wrong with it and why Merlin piston are so much smaller than Meteor ones which have the same bore and stroke, I would have thought a meteor piston would be smaller being only about 600Bhp as compared to the Merlin 1600 depending on Mk of coarse.
IR ebay and tax
Selling on ebay is the same as any other business you pay tax on the profit you make regardless of turnover although if you go over 50Kish per anum you are liable to charge and pay VAT. To make money on ebay is hard work, its very competetive and prices on most things are well below retail. If you are a trader, you may need premises, staff, you pay business rates, ebay fees, paypal fees etc etc and if you make any profit you pay tax. If you run ebay as part of another business any profit made can be set off against losses made by the business as a whole.
The great thing about ebay is that it gives everyone access to a global market, buyers and sellers, anyone can have ago, some do it for fun, some people make a living and some people make allot of money, but you can be sure of one thing, if they are successful they work hard for it. Perhaps i went to the wrong school, but in my experiance there is no such thing as easy money and eBay is no exception to that.
The simple way to buy safely check the feedback. Its easy to spot scammers, some are clever and build up a bit of feedback but you can spot this by clicking on the people leaving feedback, they generally have 0 or very low feedback themselves. Scammers hardly ever build up genuine feedback so its easy to spot. Also never believe a description unless you know its right, even honest traders make mistakes although the good ones offer full refunds if your not happy . I never bid on anything unless i know what I am buying, if you are not 100% sure don’t bid. I wish i had a £1 for everything that is being sold on eBay right now as Spitfire but of coarse isnt. I have bought a few things that werent right but i put it down to experiance, I have also got some great bargains.
Nelson’s men
And probably more reasonable to suggest, that given enough Rum a day, The men of the Royal Navy would fight anybody. Given the Rum, and the Blood red painted gun decks that hid the carnage in battle, It was probably a numbing effect that made the Royal Navy as efficient as it was.
I think the effect of a small ration of rum is being overestimated, men of the Royal navy in the 18th century were brought up on alcohol and in fact most children of the time drunk small beer because it was free of all the horrible disease’s present in water at the time. Small Beer was taken from the first brew and was allot weeker than full strength beer. Having spent a lifetime drinking progressively stronger Brews the Rum ration would have little more effect than a single pint of modern lager. In fact being drunk on a ship of the line resulted in severe puinishment, this didnt stop the crew trying to get at the rum store and it was a constant battle for the officers to keep them away from the Rum. The reason the RN was so succesful was the strict disaplin constant drills and the quality of thier officers. The RN unlike the army of the day promoted on merit, you could’nt buy a commision in the RN. This lead to a proffesional and talented leadership. On the other side the French executed 70% of thier experianced naval officers during the revolution. Toe to toe the British ships could fire three broadsides to every one of the French, the rest is history!
Mosquito
There was an amazing story in the Western Dailly press a whileback about a chap building a static mossie, the whole fusilarg was complete and fitted out, it looked superb , did anyone see it? I have a set of engine bearers for a mossie I am looking to swap for a hurricane engine bearer if anyone out there has one???
Thats a great shame
Andy
Very sorry to here that, I cut me teeth on WWII aviation at your great event as i sure many other have. I have seen all the WWII stuff dwindle and rocket in price. I started dealing in parts because i simply could not afford to do what i wanted to do on my salary, Shoreham was and has remained a highlight on my calender and am very sorry to hear your news.
I think the internet has played a big part in the decline of aerojumbles and many small busineses in general, we cant have our cake and eat it i guess.
Good luck to you and I will be sure to attend any alternative venue.
Graham
I agree
Quite so, Tony! If you reckon the that the round gun button is not so rare as this type, Graham, (with the red alloy safe/fire ring) I’d glady do a swap for one. In fact….I might even give you more than one for a genuine round button Spitfire grip old chap!!!! Andy Saunders
I agree my valuation was based on the grip alone, I didnt know the mount was with it and that adds a bit, not to mention provenace I would say Mark V’s valuation is spot on. I havent seen any rocker button grips complete for sale for 5 years, just my own experiance i wouldnt argue that the single round are even harder to find. Maybe im not looking hard enough!!

It would make more sence for the rocker type to be more available as there were allot more made I agree, I can only talk from my own experiance.
I have had several single gun buttons pass through my hands but they have all been brass, I was under the assumtion that the brass buttons were common to all aircraft types ie Hurricane, Spitfire, Harvard ect ect. Have I got it wrong? Really in need of a rocker gun button, want to trade anything else.PM me 🙂
I have seen several grips, brake levers with single firing buttons although i am sure they were all brass, its been a while and so I cant be sure, had a couple from Canada, and not the doctored Harvard ones but have only seen one Spit grip with the rocker button once in at least the last 5 years. Well for sale anyway.
ouch
Here is a picture of it. I have better pictures. Brake lever says J.D & S.B DP224
Whats the value as I have been asked to sell it for another person.:D
ouch thats very nice, 🙂
😉 🙂
Mark
😉 😉
Its about 12 inches long. It has a rocker button. Its not a relic. It has a brake lever (?) and what appears to be two pipes/ cables running down from the top inside an alloy casting that flares out toward the bottom.
There is a brass bracket with a finger sized hole in it clamped to the lower part of the blade. The anti slip covering is all intact. It has some provenance.
Can you give me a ball park guide?
🙂
In my experiance this grip with the rocker twin firing button is the rarest Spit grip to obtain at present, strange considering most spits were fitted with them. If its got provenance its a big bonus. If its in good condition with original covering,(make sure its the original covering, a sort of skrink wrap plastic) always double check the brake lever you can usually tell if its it the same age as the grip, quite often i have seen original grip with repro brake levers. Realistically you could expect to pay anything from £800 to £1500. Some may disagree with this but I would happily pay £1000 for a grip like this. Oh yes and check the dunlop number. If you get it for less its a real bargain.
Having leafed through John Sweetman’s “The Dambusters Raid” looking for details about the American bouncing bombs and the incident where a Lanc was damaged by spray, I’ve ended up finding an answer to my earlier question about the bombs’ colour. Writing about the preperations made for the raid by Mick Martin’s crew, Sweetman states that they painted their bomb black once it had been loaded onto the aircraft. The bombs were apparently green when delivered.
So there you go…
Green and mean!!!! amazing 😎
Ahh
There is footage (on that same website) showing a dummy Upkeep hitting the water – the resulting plume hitting and damaging the tail of the Lancaster that dropped it, although according to the notes on the film the crew got home.
Ahh that must be it then i remembered seeing water hit the tail, memorys not what it was. Anyway Im glad they got home.
what type of aircraft
Good to see, Oldspitty!! Just don’t tell the MOD here……..!!!!!:dev2:
What type of aircraft is the ammo shute attached to?
Thanks
Graham
