Bidding for a rare German fighter plane failed to take off the ground.
Bids for the World War II replica were expected to reach the heights of £25,000 at Dominic Winter Book Auctions in South Cerney yesterday but stuttered short when only £18,500 was offered.
The reserve for the half-scale Focke-Wulf Fw 190 – arguably the most notorious single-engine fighter plane used by the Luftwaffe – was £20,000.
It featured Luftwaffe colours and markings and is an exact representation of the aircraft flown by Major “Sepp” Wurmheller.
It is one of only two of its kind in the world and could have actually been flown off, had someone bought it.
Major Wurmheller was a notorious fighter ace who claimed more than 90 victories over the Allies and was killed in action near Alencon in 1944.
The aircraft has full documentation, including a current Permit Flight Release Certificate.
