Re 379
Trekkie,
Thanks for that, it’s much as I thought. Next question : Do you know if there has to be a ballot of members immediately prior to strike action ?
No idea. I suggest you look it up
It would appear that the Tube strikes are good for the economy. Well according to Oxford and Cambridge university studies.

Trekkie,
I’m not as well informed about the activities of trades unions as you. Do unions by law, have to ballot their members before taking strike action ?
If it is to be an official strike, This seems to suggest so. I am not very conversant in union law, never having been an official at any level, just an ordinary member.
It comes up first in all good search engines by the way.

My understanding is about 6 million union members out of a working population of about 38 million, so nearer to 16%, not 25%.
The readership statistics are not so clear cut because readership against sales can only be an estimate. But that does not take account of the increasing percentage of on-line readership of daily newspapers. I would guess your figure of 15% is a considerable under estimate, but if you have better stats I am happy to accept I am wrong.
From the Government Department for Business Innovation and Skills Trade Union Membership statistical Bulletin 2014
the proportion of employees who were trade union members fell slightly to 25.0% in 2014
I guess we are talking about slightly different populations,so we may both be right. It is unlikely that a large number of self employed people are likely to be members of trades unions, although there are some. Myself for example. I should have used employees rather than working population. As a reasonable percentage of those who buy a paper tend to buy two if my admittedly unscientific revue of being in a queue in the shop today (mostly the Daily Mail and Telegraph together where I was, unfortunately) the tabloid percentage is likely to be lower than that I quoted
Edit:
Just found this, which if accurate and averaged on a daily basis on a 30 day month, would mean approx. 4m people read newspapers daily in print and online combined. So still fewer than the 6m Union membership.
although of course this does not take into account those who buy the paper AND look at their website, so the total may be smaller than this
Interesting that the Broadsheets have a far higher strike rate with their on-line presence than their print versions, the more ‘Tabloid” the approach of the newspaper, the greater the print copies compared to their online hits.

Unions are generally despised here because of their militant, self serving nature in the UK
Contrary to what may be exhibited here, in my experience this is not an accurate reflection of the population as a whole.
Since 25% of the working population of the UK are members of a trades union, you are tarring a significant percentage of your fellow countrymen and women with your own views, which I am sure are sincerely held. However suggesting that looking in the Tabloids will act as a justification for these views is not a valid argument either. Fewer than 15% of the adult population of the UK read a newspaper daily.
I believe most trade union leaders are in the position for life, no elections for them
This is not accurate either. All unions ballot members on a regular basis for the leadership and other officials, both national and local.

Trekkie,
“……..very poor graphically…..”
I rather thought that the colours and arrangement to which you refer were specific – and have been so for many years, to the poster boys and girls at the Socialist Workers Party.
This may well be true, I have no idea as I don’t have any interest in nor experience of the SWP,
If so, their posters are cr*p visually as well.
Edit: just had a very quick google, no substitute for genuine research of course, but the images I have found look more like Sun headline pages-white text on black, white text on red, not the mish-mash seen above. But this is on very limited evidence. And no, I didn’t just look at wiki

And these are supposed to put people off? So poorly presented they are laughable. You should never put black banners in a red background with white text, it makes it so difficult to read. Very poor graphically
Smacks of desperation to me.
Actually of course, it is in the Tories interest to set the agenda on this as soon as possible, tell the same half truths and speculation often enough and the gullable masses will come to believe it. Classic propaganda approach

As soon as Boris gets his way with trucks in London, it will be a lot less likely. Soon many will have left turns banned. Strange that Boris would want to stop people turning to the left isn’t it……
