Sticking with the Essex Meteor crashes, does anyone have any pictures of/ press cuttings about this one?
12th April 1952
RAF Meteor 8 WF700 Fire in air, loss of control Sqn. Ldr. J. Miller sustained bruises during parachute development – tore cartilage on landing.
My Dad – then aged 7! remembers seeing the wreckage having destroyed a bungalow in Thundersley. Apparently, the pilot landed outside the Woodcutter’s Arms.
Seems to be a lot of forum members with Essex connections, past and present – myself included! Perhaps we need our own foum!
RFC Rencombe (also in Gloucestershire!!) takes some beating….maybe it’s a Cotswold thing….Moreton-in-Marsh, Aston Down, Lt Rissington (still technically MoD) and Staverton are all pretty much ‘as was’.
A search for Battlefield on Google Maps shows what looks like a scrapyard right beside the A49…….the resolution’s not high enough on ‘satellite’ to see the pannier, but worth a further look….
A picture exists of the aircraft after it’s accident at Staverton…I know, because I’ve seen it!! I just can’t remember where!!!

Many thanks. Spent many hours as a kid sliding down those very slopes on pieces of cardboard or playing on the steam engine in the park.
I’ll have a search around….if you can’t wait, a couple of quid will get you one…
Whilst the auction catalogue will cost you a lot more!!!
I may have a spare copy of the Museum Guide book if anyone’s interested? It’ll take some finding amongst a loft full of junk…
Brought back to the top to ‘coincide’ with the PT26 on Ebay thread. Have no recollection of that being in the collection at all. Any ideas?
Found the 80’s Southend thread, but there’s no mention of the PT26 and I don’t remember it at all…?
Any idea how long she was at Southend? I have no recollection of her ever being on display there.
Moondance – I’d be interested to know if you have any more pictures from the Southend Museum form that trip? Fairly sure Old Fart would be keen to see them too…
Thats a shame….. 🙁 Hopefully they have got plans for her as having seen some more pics now G-AGPG is in a VERY delicate state now.
