Aim for purely Pentagon staffing cut in half, that will cut down a significant amount of the budget.

He’s talking about the UK MOD.

They can start with the cuts at the senior ranks, we’ve got way too many of those.

looks like Italy is having second thoughts too, seems like the F-35B might be losing supporters

    F-35 Under Fire In Italy

like I said, I doubt the F-35 will even survive the next few years

I’ve read previously that the Italian airforce has a similar viewpoint as the RAF with regard to the FAA and similar political clout, therefore not much a surprise in austire times that the Italian navy get’s shafted for fast air.

with all these projects being continually delayed, expensive, complicated, and weight gain..

would it have been cheaper in the end to have stuck to dedicated designs?

for example: instead of JSF, a dedicated aircraft for V/STOL, and a dedicated aircraft for the Navy and Air Force? (Perhaps two instead of one design).

Instead of putting a bunch of skills into one airframe, separate them into either dedicated aircraft (i.e. Su-25 and MiG-29) or variants of a common design (AJ-37 and JA-37, Tornado IDS and ADV)

I’d say the STOVL aircraft should definitely have been a dedicated design, and trying to cram everything into a STOVL airframe has probably damaged the JSF concept right from the start. I’d go further and say that the F35B is overspec’d for a Harrier replacement.

Would anyone like to discuss Japan’s purchase of the F-35A?

I think they’re all enjoying bickering too much.

I notice this forum is full of robust debate, alive and well and…… full of Defensetalk members!, the last post in Defensetalk regarding the JSF was 6 days ago.. Hmmmmm…..< insert tumbleweed image>

Perhaps that might tell you something – I guessing not

The banning quoted suggests that people find somewhere else to do it and then you follow them!!

Hardly, I’ve never contributed to the JSF debate on either that forum or this one.

And that nicely illustrates the problem with all on-line fora – what one man (or what one moderator) thinks is a reasonable ban, another man may see as an over-reaction.

For example, in this forum a rather nasty insult aimed at me (which probably caused great amusement to forum members who know me in the outside world) was allowed the remain, while a posting of mine suggesting that a moderator may have over-reacted to a trifling incident was speedily deleted. In both of these cases, I and one or more of the moderators obviously subscribed to different standards.

Personally, provided that a discussion remains on topic and avoids ‘ad hominem’ attacks, the less that the rusty sword of interdict is used, the happier I am.

Fair play, I much prefer the moderation style on DefenceTalk because the forum lends itself to a great deal less hysteria and general forum infighting than you get on here.

The reason for the ban, the post that earned it and the reason cited for the ban is on the next page:

Okay, that’s the line and you crossed it. The amount of times it has been explained to you why people feel differently to you about the project is countless, and yet you see fit to discount it all as group think and wheel out the classics like “if you don’t think the F-35 project has been perfect you must be a troll” – so what’s the story then? It’s perfectly reasonable for you to have a differing point of view to everyone else, but if they have a differing point of view it must be because of group think or because of some bull**** agenda you ascribe to strangers on the internet? Can’t you see how bloody hypocritical that is?

You’re done, mate. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt for a long time but if you’re going to flat out take the **** like you are above, then you can find somewhere else to do it.

Seems like a fairly reasonable ban to me.

    Astute class is impressive!

However considering the large number of cruise missiles used in e.g. Libya, would the Astute not benefit from a slightly large missile carrying capacity?

Of course but I’m not sure if it’s realistic though, only the SSGNs and the Seawolf’s of the USN have a greater capacity in service at the moment, as far as I’m aware of any of the boats that are due to enter service in this decade or so only The Yasen’s have the potential to exceed the Astute’s armament.

When the option to design Ocean came up the RN should have decided to combine the role with the Fearless and Intrepid replacement and gone for 2 LHDs instead of 2 x LPDs and 1 LPH, obviously this is a very alterate reality as it means the RN are selecting 2 ships instead 3 and acknowledging that cuts would happen before anyone had identified this as such.

T45 mostly leave as is with the following exceptions:
    1) Change Sylver A50 cells for A70 at build (as Jonesy has stated we could do with more LACM and I think this is the eaisest way to get it).
    2) Fit a different gun probably the Otrobreda 127/64.

It looks I will get my wish for a new main gun which will have guided extended munitions in the form of the ‘Maritime Indirect Fire System’.

    Good.

Indeed I agree with Musashi, the health excuse was fairly weak as it was: Carbon Dioxide risk to the embryo. If a female crew member gets pregnant shes off the boat anyway surface fleet or sub force. Its a volunteer service anyway so the woman accepts the risk signing up for it.

In general the same rules about men keeping their torpedos tucked away apply in the surface fleet, its imperfect but if somebody wants to serve our nation I see no reason why they can’t volunteer as long as they can meet the same entrance requirements.

So in the same vein I have no problem with woman applying to join the Royal Marines or Parachute Regiment. As long as the physical requirements are not reduced they get the same chance as the men. (Woman have applied none as of yet have passed the physical selection process).

In theory an all female crew would be better in a Submarine, woman tend to be smaller and are psychologically more able to work together as a group in a confined space.

I’m sure mixed crews will be fine in the sub service, actually I am surprised the service held out this long.

    Agree with all this.

Why not?! The gains from that are limited without the related control-center. 😎

Certainly, but while there are still gains to be had it’s a worthwhile exercise for very little effort.

Has this alleged downing been confiremed or denied by official US sources yet? If Pentagon has choosen not to comment on the incident what so ever, my bet is on the Iranis telling the truth for once.

If there is any truth to this then they will produce photographic evidence to support it.
