May be its just me, but why did Syrians have to open their big mouths so soon when they could have used that time to hide the evidence in the first place, and why did Israelis allowed them so much time to do so?

The Syrians, like the Israeli air raid on Ayn Shahab (Syria) back in 2003, chose to play the innocent card. They simply announced that Israel had conducted an airstrike, dropped bombs and had violated their airspace. Syria simply looked for the sympathy vote and complained to the international community and U.N.

What evidence could they hide? How are you going to hide the fact that a large structure near a river bank is no longer there?

The theory is that the Syrians built this facility and chose not to put air defences around it. The reason being that they didn’t want to draw attention to it. The positioning of air defences around a structure is going to get the attention of Israeli and other intelligence services, either visually or electronically. For air defences to spring up and radiate in a new location is going to bring it to the attention of interested intelligence services. It appears that the Syrians didn’t do this or put up in-depth fence layers in order not to draw immediate attention to the facility.

The Israeli’s and the U.S. could have gone down the IAEA route and brought it to their attention. This possibly would have brought pressure on the Syrians to open up the facility for IAEA inspection. That drawn out process could also have allowed the Syrians to finish the structure and also deploy substantial air defences around it as well as denying IAEA access.

The Israelis, it appears, chose the right time to cripple the project. The Israelis released footage of the Iraqi reactor strike and the Ayn Shahab strike. Maybe in time they will also release footage of the Syrian strike?

on the one hand proponents claim that the IDF has no problems with Syrian AD. Then why need to anger Turkey, Israel’s closest Muslim Ally?

Why not? Use any means possible to minimize your risks. No aircraft is totally invulnerable to being brought down by an air defence system. Would it have made you any happier if the Israeli strike package had buzzed Damascus on their egress route?

Why go back over an alerted air defence system and risk giving the Syrians even the remotest chance of bringing down an Israeli aircraft in their territory? Imagine the propaganda coup of Israeli aircrew having to eject and being captured inside Syria? The destruction of the facility and no chance of retaliaton at the strike package must have annoyed the hell out of the Syrians?

A win, win situation for the Israelis and a bit of a headache for Syrian defences. Have the Syrians now had to go to great expense to bolster air defences along the Turkish border due to one single raid? A route that the Israelis might never use again? It possibly only resulted in a short ban on the use of Turkish bombing ranges by Israeli aircraft, if that. I’m sure that Turkey is very privately content that the facility has been destroyed.

thats a good point but it still doesn’t explain why the IDF had to fly over Turkey, something that surely was not part of the plan.

The externals were found in Number 61 – Antioch (Hatay) and number 62 – Gaziantep regions.

    http://www.map-of-turkey.co.uk/maps/Turkey.gif

Why not make use of skirting the Turkish border and then zip over the Hatay province on final egress. It seems very logical to me! Why egress further south into a potential hornets nest? Maybe the strike package on ingress followed this route too and the externals were dropped on ingress?

The aircraft might have suffered a technical and the crew blew off their externals? Why is jettisoning externals an indication of an aircraft in trouble due to enemy action? Maybe the plan was to jettison externals when they were on final egress after most of the fuel was consumed?

Maybe there was a number of F-15 externals jettisoned on egress over Syria? Combat jettisoned in order to give the crews more maneuverability on egress after completing a strike deep inside hostile territory. All part of the plan due to the likelyhood that the Syrians would have by then been alerted to intruders in their airspace. Why keep empty or nearly empty externals on an airframe on final egress from hostile territory?

Great pictures. You probably know, but your camera sensor needs a bit of a clean. The dust spots are quite visible on a lot of the images.

    Thanks for the comments.

Nice shots there thanks for posting. Why is she being retired?

    James

This airframe was retired as it was out of hours. With a few exceptions the majority of the UK Jag fleet was out of airframe hours.

    Hi Mike,

I can only refer you to

    http://www.eurofighter-typhoon.co.uk/Eurofighter/structure.html

‘Automatic slats are present on the main wing leading edges which ensure the correct wing camber is maintained across the flight envelope.’

I suppose they retract as the G-forces come off? These appear to be fully deployed.

Great shots, but they would be better with a lower shutterspeed (1/100th of a second or similar). I guess when you only have a fraction of a second to aim and shoot, you can’t be too picky though! 😀

Using such low speeds is very difficult on fast movers. The amount of useable material would be very low. You’d need perfect panning skills and a lot of luck. All sorts of factors against you such as wind on the hills and the cold/wind chill. Weight of camera and lens also come into factor.

Sometimes low speed shots happen by accident after forgetting to change up speeds after a prop goes through.

Sometime the results of low-speed can be spectacular as the Tornado on this page shows. Chris obviously has his panning skills down to a tee!

    Superb photos TEEJ

Do you get any advance information on what is likely to appear? I fancy doing some of this stuff myself one day but it would long way to go for me only to find nothing happening.

    Cheers

    Martin

    Hi Martin,

The following websites have all the info. It is advisable to register and get access to the forums.

    http://www.lowfly.net/

    http://www.warplane.co.uk/

    MoD websites on low-flying

I just like to turn up, choose a location and wait. You never know what is going to appear from around a valley corner and that is how I like it. It is advisable to check the NOTAMs beforehand. The MoD also pre-announce exercises and this is sometimes a good indicator that the low-fly areas will see traffic. For example French Mirage 2000s used the Lake District this year during one exercise.

Purple Bases? What are they – never heard of ’em? Can you enlighten?

    Cheers

Members from all UK forces working closely together. ‘Purple’ is derived from mixing Army green with the light blue of the RAF and the dark blue of the Navy.

Mount Pleasant would be one example already mentioned. Another would be RAF Digby.

Typhoons will also be based eventually as a Flt in the Falklands. I’ve seen rumours about the new designations such as FGR.4. for the newly delivered/upgraded single-seaters. Any confirmation?
