And thanks for the news about the Typhoon firing Meteor, TEEJ.
No problem.
Also nice to see the LGB markings on the side of the RAF Typhoon, now ‘blooded’, so to speak. So is there any news of how many Typhoons returned? I presume other RAF Typhoons have taken their places in Italy to take part and support operations over Libya and without doubt the pilots that have returned will without doubt pass on their knowledge and help train other Typhoon pilots in the A/G environment.
So far this is the only Typhoon to return with mission markings. At least two Typhoons have returned early in the conflict from the original batch that was sent out to Italy. This was before the Typhoons started bombing.
The best person to get all the details from is enthusiast Kevin Mapes. Contact him via his websites.

No problem, guys.
@TEEJ,
thanks for the update that’s nice to know:). Appears to have been recently, could it be that now where the F3s are retired Typhoons take over the role of testing the Meteor or is it part of the Meteor integration into the Typhoon itself?
I don’t think that the F3s and F2 (Tornado) at Boscombe will be going anywhere soon. The rumour was that the Boscombe F3 fleet would be increasing. This was rumour a few months ago.
At least one F3 has been added to the Boscombe fleet since the retirement from the RAF.

IIRC Typhoons have been seen taking off with a Meteor & landing without it, so integration has got at least as far as release trials.
Reference Typhoon and Meteor missile tests.

I passed in front of Wittering RAF base this week with my truck and there was a “brand new” harrier staying at the entrance, replacing the older one that was there before. took a pic with my phone but while driving, it’s not very easy to do it right… 😉
it’s in fully grey camo, carrying two big droptanks and two really big GBUs under the wings. while it looks nice, sadly, that’d be one harrier very recently retired…
It is serial ZD469. *Christine as she was named has been out of service for some time. It was one of the Harriers damaged in a Taliban ground to ground rocket attack in Afghanistan back in 2005.
*It come from the Stephen King novel ‘Christine’. It tells of a car possessed by supernatural forces. Even the Taliban couldn’t kill off ‘Christine’ completely!

… as well as some illogical peculiarities accompanying this raid (the windows from the inside video have oval shape, unseen anywhere on the outside pictures of OBL’s alleged mansion).
Did you actually do any research on the subject other than naively believing what others conspiracy present as ‘evidence’? Try it for yourself? You are aware that there were a number of buildings within that compound? It appears to be one of the smaller buildings rather than the main house.
Zoom into the windows and note the frame inside the windows apart from the actual oval external frame!

Satan 1/2 callsigns were being used by pilots flying Hawks. Units such as FRADU employing ex-Harrier pilots. It will just be the pilots continuing the use of the old Harrier callsigns. Harriers are not flying in the UK. There was a bit of a flap last week when an enthusiast thought he saw one flying near Cottesmore. It was an Alpha Jet!

I remember that. I also remember that the supposed Roland 3s were later identified as Roland 2s supplied in the 1980s.
IIRC the ‘2002’ marking on some found by Polish troops in 2003 was accompanied by codes apparently relating to an Iraqi arms factory. May have been an expiry or refurbishment date. Poland apologised to France.
Correct. The 2002 and 2003 stencils found on the Roland containers was deemed to have been applied by the Iraqis themselves.
Prior to the US-led invasion of Iraq, the Al Kindi Establishment north of Mosul seems to have conducted large-scale inspections and tests of various missiles delivered to Iraq during the 1980s by Aerospatiale, writes Grzegorz Holdanowicz. Sources have suggested that missiles were checked immediately prior to being delivered to Iraqi combat units before the start of hostilities.
Markings found on Roland-2 missile canisters recovered by the occupation forces suggest these inspections were carried out during 2002 and early 2003, dates which led to speculation that France had been supplying Iraq with Roland missiles manufactured in those years.
The Polish demolition team snipped off the tags from the ROLANDS before they were destroyed by controlled explosion. From the video footage:
“.. SOCIETE NATIONAL INDUSTRIELLE
CONSTRUCTION DE TARBES
REFERENCE SNIAS No 969446
DESIGNATION GIAT ATS F5316
NO DE SERIE B + V 176
MASSE 960
DATE 11.7.83
CONTROLE MA12″
During 2003 the French Ministry released the following in reference to the 2002 stencils found on the first batch of Rolands.
“We confirm in particular that there was no export of Roland missiles or parts to Iraq after 1990. The marking cited by Newsweek (05/11 KND 2002) does not correspond to markings used by the French MBDA company on these missiles.”

Not quite. Some of the text in his article is identical to sections of an article published in the Wall Street Journal two days earlier, & at least some of the pictures he claimed to be exclusive had already been published.
Thanks for the date correction. Charles R. Smith appears to be the journalist that put the ‘French spin’ on the story? He appears not to have been a fan of the French. Practically every Iraq story he published had a go at the French for supplying arms to Iraq during the arms embargo. He even had France supplying new Roland 3s!
There was also the infamous Roland missiles found with a 2003 date on them that got totally blown out of all proportion. Of course the retractions and mix-ups fell mostly on deaf ears and the French bashing stories took on a life of their own.
A Charles R. Smith article with claims of the Roland 3s.

There is a poster at F16.net that claims the MiG-25 that was found buried in the Iraqi desert was full of French parts. Has there been any reports of this outside that one Internet claim? I find it difficult to believe the French could offer any real upgrades to the Iraqi Foxbats.
The original article was written by Charles R. Smith in 2003. Since then it has taken on a life of its own. Pure speculation on his part led to his claim.
The Foxbat may also be equipped with advanced Russian- and French-made electronics that were sold to Iraq during the 1990s in violation of a U.N. ban on arms sales to Baghdad.

All you have stumbled upon is a poster who has himself embellished the story in 2008. Poster maddog2840 on F-16.net?
Maddog wrote
There was something very special about that MiG-25. You see, it looked like a Foxbat on the outside. Inside were French avionics, French engines, French weapon systems. Think of “Pimp Your Ride”. All old on the outside but new (and in this case deadly) on the inside.

You can see how stories like these get embellished over the years.
