The airtest was cancelled today – Lancaster is unserviceable.

    From BBMF website.

‘The Lancaster is unserviceable; a fuel **** shut off valve is faulty and this controls the fuel sent to the engine. Currently, our engineers are attempting to resolve the issue – further updates will be posted.’

It is a nice little channel. The team have been working hard. Well done!

Have the problems with the Lancaster been resolved? I’ve noticed a cancellation post on Fighter Control over the weekend. The Lancaster was also missing from the Flying Programme scheduled for the Bank Holiday weekend.

“We have just been informed by the RAF that due to technical problems the Memorial Flight consisting of the Lancaster Bomber, Spitfire & Hurricane will be unable to attend the Fortress Wales. However, arrangements have been made for the Dakota to fly in their absence (Weather permitting).”

Just heard that 4 of 11 typhoons that went up yesterday have ash related issues. Presumably this means that there is literally no Typhoons going up now which would include the practice displays for the coming display season.

Typhoons back up as of 0800 local this morning. Kicked off with a blistering Typhoon practice display and was repeated at 1300 local. The Typhoon was also practising with Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire Mk LFIXe as a synchro pair. Routine flying by the squadrons.

One of the jets even got a kill this morning with his undercarriage! An unfortunate Hare trying to cross the runway!

I did have my tongue in my cheek. That’s a very good link – thanks a lot.

    No problem. 🙂

The Typhoon training flights have been affected as the plane is a new “high performance aircraft”.

So as the Harriers and Tornados are old it doesn’t matter if they crash!

It would be to do with how the Typhoon is operated. The Harriers and Tornados will be conducting their transits and training at much lower height. The Typhoon will be using its climb ability to transit via much higher airspace. See following article

    http://www.globalaviationresource.com/reports/2010/29rsqn.php

“Within a matter of minutes after leaving Coningsby we can be at altitude, just east of Wittering for example and practising ACM (air combat manoeuvres),” says Tim, “that’s brilliant for training.”

“Equally, we usually transit across the UK at 40,000ft+, which means we are above all the airway traffic and can reach anywhere by taking a direct route, so this is both quick and efficient. The trick though is coming down from altitude as, if we select idle and point the aircraft five degrees nose down, we will still go supersonic.

“We have to roll the aircraft inverted and pull back hard on the stick to unload all the energy and can then spiral downwards without breaking the sound barrier.”

    8 missiles for peacetime QRA?

Talk about a waste of missile flying hours…

I’d say 2 AMRAAM + 2 ASRAAM would be plenty already.

    Nic

Well write or e-mail the MoD and inform them? I’m sure they will adjust the QRA fit to your requirements, Nic? Why not drop a letter to RAF Coningsby?

Why not give them a ring?

    http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafconingsby/contactus.cfm

I’m sure that they will download a couple of ASRAAMs from the QRA bird.

I’m sure that there will now be a mad rush via GEMS to claim that financial reward!

Good grief, Bluewings. It isn’t getting any better!

Have you ever tried a basic search on the web before you post? There are videos of Quick Reacton Alert launches and a whole host of images with Typhoon in QRA fit.

See following video link. It is real and not a video game! The pilot drops some paperwork. Obviously this is very important downloads from your forum posts. No Typhoon pilot goes anywhere without all the info and tactics gleaned from Bluewings posts!

Anyone got any pictures of the radars to go with the S-300 launchers? I thought it more than a little odd that I’ve only seen the launchers so far.

The first radar looks like a Nebo which the Russians have sold to Iran.

    http://www.ausairpower.net/APA-Nebo-SVU-Analysis.html

The second radar looks like a Flap Lid, or Flap Lid mock up. Flap Lid would have been easy for Iran to obtain from numerous sources after the break-up of the Soviet Union.

Other images from the ‘S-300’ parade show associated S-300 radars.

    http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?177921-Iran-Commemorates-Army-Day-(s-300-in-the-Parade)/page7

Iran has been seeking S-300 for decades. It is likely that Iran has obtained bits and bobs of the system just like the US and UK have done after the break up of the Soviet Union. It doesn’t mean that they had any system operational or deployed. It is likely that they have cobbled together these bits and pieces purely for parade propaganda purposes.

Iran is clearly desperate to get Russia to agree to the S-300 supply deal. Have they shot themselves in the foot with all the bluster about building their own version.

That was the report I was referring to, and what I meant.

It may have been what you meant, but your reply certainly varied from the more refined and accurate wording of said report.

It’d restrict where they can fly though. Harriers aren’t allowed over central London due to their nasty habit of crashing.

Harriers can fly over London, but it would have to be at a height that wouldn’t be acceptable for a flypast display. The Hawk replaced Harriers during 2007 for the Falklands 25th Anniversary. The Harrier has a very poor glide capability.

From the press release at the time

‘Harriers will not take part in the flypast over London because single engine aircraft without the capability to glide in the event of an engine failure are not permitted to fly low over central London. Were they to take part, they would have to fly too high to be part of the display.’
