    Ant,
It is known that there was no fault found with the power plant.

Hi Daz, the trim tabs are molded into the elevator but there are no control rods to them, also the elevator is never in that position when on the ground, if a control lock is fitted then the elevator is held in the ‘full up’ position.
When I was at Soesterberg the museum there also had a ‘plastic’ Spitfire. The real one inside the museum did donate one of it’s MLG to me for MK732 after it’s accident in the 90’s

Im sure the LVG would also have had many years ahead of her in the air but at least we know they are going to be looked after in a museum with an excellent track record (cue Halifax, tiffie on perch gags).

I do have one gripe however………………………..

There are several aircraft at the RAF museum that could be ground run, some of the German aircraft i understand were run at St Athan and there is no doubt Black Six with a little work and the newly arrived Mustang could taxi also. If the RAF Museum wants to teach the new generations about aircraft, let the hear what a real aircraft engine sounds lie.
    steve 🙂

While ground running is not too risky as long as you follow the procedures, I’m dead against taxying any aircraft around for the sake of it, one slip on the brakes & it’s on it’s nose with all the damage that comes with it! sure, it’s nice to see & hear a vintage warbird running but the reality is that there are several CD’s with both fine photo’s & sound clips, these don’t risk the aircraft in any way, sorry to say it but the 100 or so enthusiasts who watch a taxi run out of a crowd of 5,000 ar not going to foot the bill if it ends up on it’s nose or running off the runway & shearing a leg!
    Just my thoughts!

I must get out more! (back to work on the 5th) I have just looked at the Duxford website & looked at DAS ‘Friends of Duxford’ page, http://www.tfod.org.uk/news/index.htm It’s nice to see they update on a regular basis!! I trust they are more up to date with their maintenance programe. I also notice they don’t publish the cost of membership to DAS or the friends of Duxford, seems a bit strange that.
    Cheers……………

Sure, fine, but why should I have to pay towards it?? 🙁

I’m afraid I will not pay for the privilage of working, for free, on someones museum exhibit, whoever they are, as stated before It will cost me enough to get there both in time & fuel, it’s somewhere in the region of a 300 mile round trip for me from Bristol & around 5 hours drive depending on the M4/M25/M11 traffic.
Also, I don’t think I need to attend an induction day before I work on dead aircraft, I’ve been around live ones for long enough!

Most Warbirds will have a 3rd party cover lets say of £1 million, When flying at an Airshow organisers will be looking for cover for £10/30 million at some military shows, this is where the high premium cost comes in, after all, If you pile into a C130 or a couple of Tormado’s think of that cost!

    Cheers…………..

I’m quite happy to travel from Bristol to give a hand which will cost me both money & time, I’m not about to pay a subscription to join DAS, I’m probably putting more in my fuel tank than the subscription cost! plus there are a few more deserving causes much nearer to home than Duxford I could join if I felt so inclined! It seems that who ever runs Duxford cannot see what needs to be done to this historic aircraft.
We should see this as being a ‘one off’ task. If we on this forum are interested in cleaning up the Shackleton (as we all seem to be outraged as to it’s present condition) then that is what we should be allowed to do, obviously not stepping on too many toes while we do it, If we can form a group to do this then all well & good, If we can’t then we should either ‘put up or shut up’ We can all talk until we are blue in the face but talk does nothing, lets start 2004 with a project to help return a neglected airframe back to something people care about again, I cannot understand why folks are working inside this aircraft where you can’t see when the outside is in such a state!.
In the past I have been cleared for military security to quite high levels both here & Europe, I’m really not interested in petty burocracy (sorry about the spelling!) /induction days & waiting for a committee to decide what needs to be done, anyone with eyes can see the task, safe access etc is all that needs to be supplied allong with the materials. I don’t see why I should have to join DAS to do this.

That’s not such a silly idea Bob, If the IWM would allow it, (If they didn’t allow it thet there is not much hope for the future of the exhibits) To set up a ‘Flypast’ support group, the museum supplies the materials & access, we supply the labour. In return the workers could gain access points allowing free access to Air displays at DX during the year which would cost the IWM nothing but would be seen to be giving the team something back for the work done this way even the most unskilled of us here on the forum could do something for the continuation of the aircraft display industry.
Personally I’m not in favour of paying an annual fee to join a support group to help out a place tidy up so it makes it look better for them. I’m really only talking about a clean up group to get some of these airframes looking a bit better than they do now. Give me some feedback on this & if you like I’ll contact the IWM to see if it’s do-able. I know there may be support groups already at DX but obviously there are not enough looking at the state of the out side exhibits.
    I await you CONSTRUCTIVE comments!

I suspect the damage caused by the Broussard was quite minor & would have been easy to rectify, 17 odd years have past since that event which, to my mind is plenty of time to carry out the required repairs. Looking at the pictures posted I see dull paint, missing covers, some with bird droppings etc, It takes little time to walk around even an aircraft the size of a Shackleton & wipe away droppings, tighten up an inspection panel or two, even making replacements should not be beyond their scope, It would not even take too long to clean the whole airframe choosing one area at a time, lets face it if it was re painted in the 1980’s that’s around 20 years of dereliction & being ignored you see in front of you! Surely any exhibits stored outside should have a planed maintenance system in place & if you can neither staff or fund that system then the exhibit should be removed to somewhere that can look after it or dare I say, scrapped, because to exhibit an item like that just shows that the IWM cannot cope with the task of looking after that many items of historic value in a responsible manner.

    Dez,
I hear what you are saying, my point is that it is no good to keep collecting airframes If you can’t support them. It’s no good relying on peoples good will to maintain them, there should be controlled planning in place where if you can’t maintain of support anymore someone should stand up & say so rather than burying their heads in the sand. some times it is better to say no! Who can really say the want to walk around somewhere that is little better than a scrap yard?
