The presence of firearms adds to the overall risk in the situation, while the locked and strengthened cockpit door reduces it.
And if the pilot shoots, misses and is overpowered what have you got then?
A terrorist with a gun – hardly the desired outcome.
Locked and strengthened cockpit doors are a much more useful precaution.
The crew are then able to do their job and get the aircraft down into the nearest airport where the law enforcement and security agencies can do theirs.
