Learning about history IS (according to the government) all about the social implications of events, and not about the chronology of the event itself.

If they’re talking about higher education, then they’re probably not that wide of the mark as the emphasis at that level has always been on “what and why” rather than on the “who and when” taught to younger school students.

That is, alas, a genuine possibility as there is a proven relationship between seismic activity and volcanic activity.

On the other hand, though, it was probably just another aftershock.

In any case, the Japanese active volcanoes are very closely monitored and there would be plenty of advance warning of a major eruption.
