The Panavia Tornado was the European Equivalent to the F-111 and the Su-24 while the Buccaner was more in the class of the A-6 Intruder
The TSR.2 was very similar to the Sukhoi T-6 but as the Su-24 got VG and terrain Following radar the Panavia Tornado followed similar lines because the F-111 was so advanced in the 1960s that the TSR.2 and Buccaneer became obsolete as attack aircraft concepts when the F-111 entered service
I have heard that the Buccaneer had a better range/payload performance than the F-111 too :diablo:
Supersonic dash capability for getting out of trouble quickly, afterburners and thrust reversers for short airfield capability and advanced avionics were all proposed for Buccaneer developments (see and read about the Blackburn P.150 here http://www.thunder-and-lightnings.co.uk/buccaneer/history.html ).
The Tornado has some nice kit but it’s performance is mediocre.
SteveO a few more Yb-49 pic.
Thanks tbzz, I’m surprised I have never seen the YB-49 fitted with radar and jet pods before 😮
Here’s another Vulcan pic.
This excellent website http://blackburn-buccaneer.co.uk/ compares the Buccaneer to it’s Tornado GR1 replacement here http://blackburn-buccaneer.co.uk/Pages1_files/Replacement_Index.html?
Apart from the Tornado’s better avionics the Buccaneer had better performance in all the areas that matter 😮 😀
4 versus 2 Sea Eagles missiles 😎
I got no reply from the WebMaster last time so I will send him this message
Please can you start a new Army Aviation forum and make the old Army forum threads available in the Archives or make a final statement why this can’t be done in the Army/Navy subfora issues thread http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/sh…0771#post900771
The MRA4 is a good example for very bad invested money. Nothing to say against its capabilities, but the investemtn has no possiblity of paying off. I don’t know if the driver was politics or if there are any sane arguments for rebuilding a 50 year old airframe. A MPA on the base of an A320 would have been equally efficient, less expensive and – most important for British industry – exportable.
I agree, an A320 based multi mission aircraft would have been an ideal compromise solution for a lot of roles. NIMROD MRA4 poll http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=43287
Lightning works as a name for me as it harks back to successful types for both tier 1 partners and it also fits in with the UK’s taste in naming aircraft after various weather conditions these days.
Light drizzle?
😀 I nearly posted that myself, it sums up how bored I am with the JSF program.
I am not a lazyman. I hav done my best to search all of link by google before you direct me like this. But no one pic being to show what I want to see!
Any good?
Here is a Vulcan dropping 21x 1000lb bombs and a Buccaneer showing a full load of 4x Sea Eagle missiles 🙂

I have never seen a pic of the Northrop YB-49 ”Flying Wing” looking like that before, I didn’t realized it was fitted with jet pods. Any more YB-49 pics tbzz?
USAF CV-22’s being filmed for ”Transformers” movie http://www.af.mil/photos/media_search.asp?q=V-22
Interesting view of the CV-22’s DIRCM turrets on either side of the ramp (Hi-res) http://www.af.mil/shared/media/photodb/photos/060526-F-0974S-032.JPG
Very interesting pics, thanks for sharing 🙂
Some more info and pics from the excellent Vought website http://www.vought.com/heritage/products/html/v-173.html
Lots of nice line drawings here http://www.vought.com/heritage/html/down.html
🙁 The XF5U-1
It was never flown because many hours of engine run-up showed excessive mechanical vibration between the engine-propeller shafting, gear boxes, and airframe structure.
I’d like to the USAF buy a couple of squadrons of the Navy’s P-8A 737-bsed ASW plane minus the ASW avionics/equipment. Hang some JDAM/SDB/Viper Strikes on them and in the bombbay plus a Sniper pod and you’d a have a nice ,cheap bomber able to be used in low/no-threat environments such as Afghanistan, Columbia, current Iraq, etc. Beats wearing out the expensive B-52 and B-1 airframes out droning around over Afghanistan now.
Nice idea, I’m hoping that is what we will do with the Nimrod MRA4.
How about the F-35 Freedom Fighter II :dev2:
