Any one got pics yet?
Hi.
That’s my first post, so send you something nice
Fantastic first post tbzz, welcome to the forum 🙂
Nice find! thanks for the link 🙂
I know you will find this impossible to believe, but a US aircraft manufacture in the 1960s or 1970s offered to the US Navy an aircraft design that could be launched from a submarine under water raise to the surface, take off and then patrol, etc and then land and go back underwater and redock in the submarines. Bill Sweetman back in the 1990s posted on Compuserves Military.Com (ie one of the few military forums then with a large scale membership) the only know photo of the design.
Is this it? http://www.waterufo.net/flyingsubs/NavyFlyingSubHtml1.htm
The USA studied the idea of a submarine fighter in the 60’s http://www.nawcwpns.navy.mil/clmf/moray.html
Mines are probably a greater threat to navies than any other current weapon system and they should be the weapon of choice for any country that needs to defend it’s shores but can’t match the threat on equal terms.
There are a lot of mine counter measure systems in service and under development so I think future mines will need some sort of self defence weapon such as a pop up missile to attack mine warfare ships and helicopters.

There is no plane in this pic but it’s a impressive weapon, Fuel-Air Explosive delivery sequence http://www.nawcwpns.navy.mil/clmf/faeseq.html

Barracuda
Barracuda is a technology demonstration program for a supercavitating underwater missile for defence against torpedoes and for engagement of submarines. It is equipped with a rocket motor, inertial reference unit/autopilot and a mobile, conus-shaped tip. The rocket motor provides Barracuda with an underwater speed of 360km/hr, the inertial reference unit/autopilot stabilizes the missile and the flexible nose cone provides steering. During underwater travel, Barracuda moves in an air bubble, the so-called cavitation bubble which greatly reduces the water resistance, thus enabling the high speed. Some test models of the underwater missile have been built, successfully demonstrating stable straight and curved path accuracy in several tests. Barracuda will be deployed from submarines and from surface vessels.
I’m waiting for some country to deploy a 3 stage anti-ship cruise missile that launches a self defence anti-radar missile and drops a supercavitating underwater missile as well as it’s own warhead :dev2:
Interesting development, I can’t see this design taking on warships but if you put some machine guns, rockets and maybe even a Stinger type missile on it, I guess it would be something else to worry about for helicopters and small craft operating in the littorals.
The configuration looks pretty much the same as many other Ekranoplan/WIG designs and uses the Lippisch reversed delta wing.
I think Iran would be wise to further develop military Ekranoplan’s, they should be easier to develop than modern combat aircraft and I think they would be more effective and survivable than submarines and warships.
I discussed the merits of Ekranoplans in this thread – EKRANOPLANS (WIGs) http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=53205&highlight=EKRANOPLANS
Any news on the Army sub-forum yet? is it gone for good or will it return as Army Aviation?
Bump 😉
This definitely counts as impressive, two U.S. Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters carrying two Humvees each and aerial refueling at the same time 😮
