Then we have the GR9 replacement issue. Would you use Typhoon for cab-rank CAS?
I would 🙂
I would hate to see the UK throw away it’s V/STOL capability, but if the F-35B is cancelled more RAF Typhoon’s and AAC Apache’s should be brought to replace the Harrier GR9 in RAF service.
Uk should buy 60 rafale M + 2 catobar cvf + 4 E-2D + 30 more typhoon instead of 150 jsf.
How many Rafale M will France need for it’s carriers? is 60 enough?
If the UK does pull out of the JSF program and still wants another 150 fighters it should buy 75 Rafale M for the FAA/RN and another 75 Typhoon for the RAF (232+75=307 Typhoon).
I think it would be pretty easy to learn to fly and operate a modern combat jet with all the care free handling systems they put in them nowadays. The hard part will be learning all the tactics and manoeuveres needed to win a fight.

Why does make an overweight F-35C some sense and a Rafale M not?!
It wouldn’t make any sense to buy the Rafale M for the RAF as the carriers would be full of FAA aircraft and it’s capabilities are little different to the Typhoon when operating from land bases.
Buying the F-35C for the RAF makes some sense because of it’s stealth capabilities.
Thanks Coach 🙂 it was about time they fixed it 😀
If surface launched conventional ICBMs are politically unacceptable perhaps the air launched ballistic missile concept should be revisited?
Here is a pic of a Vulcan carrying dummy Skybolt missiles from http://www.famousvulcans.co.uk/xh537skybolt.htm and a pic of a Minuteman-1 which I think was launched out the back of a C-5 Galaxy?
And would you negociate a state status for each of your “unified” kingdoms to earn more seats in the Congress and Senat or a global one to weight a bit more in the Union ?
How yes! I know the way Britain would negociate: “What do you want sir?” 😀
I don’t understand this post, what are you trying to say?
Or more seriously, maybe will the RAF bring back an old Blackburn Bucaneer from a museum to bring the targeting pod as they did during Gulfwar1 for the Tornado…
Enhanced Paveway’s and Paveway IV have GPS/INS guidance too, so a targetting pod isn’t absolutely necessary anyway.
Eurofighter’s bogus graphic has now been fixed, so all the pylons are in the proper place 😀 Anyone else seen it yet?
Here’s the old incorrect pic again, anyone have the new pic?
I think this cutaway shows the data link pod under the right wing.
I found a decent SDB image here http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/2005/11/383m-to-produce-more-sdb-i-smart-bombs/index.php
Just buying Rafales for the FAA would allow the navy to keep its air wing and allow the RAF to concentrate on Typhoons and Tornado GR.4s. I believe this would be better than having a joint JSF force, but thats just me.
Plus, the novelty factor of having Rafales and Typhoons is too much to miss, and perhaps Mr. Chirac could be convinced to buy a squadron or two of typhoons? :diablo: 😀 😀 😀
Sounds about right. No point in buying Rafales for what Typhoons can do. Just the carrier force. Minimal modifications so they take UK spec Storm Shadow instead of Scalp, Asraam instead of IR Mica, other UK weapons integrated.Meteor should be available by then, so no need to integrate AIM-120. So no special “Rafale-only” weapons. That should be enough.
Exactly, only the STOVL Harrier and JSF gave the FAA/RAF joint carrier force any justification. Buying more conventional carrier fighters than you can operate on your carriers doesn’t make any sense unless you’re expecting a very high loss rate.
150x STOVL F-35B JSF makes sense 🙂
150x CV F-35C JSF makes some sense 😉
150x Rafale M would make no sense 😀
If it comes to a Rafale buy get only 60-80 for the FAA and get very good offsets.
I agree, hopefully future systems common for both the Rafale and Typhoon such as the AMSAR (Airborne Multi-mode Solid-state Active-array Radar) and Meteor BVRAAM would be available to reduce the logistics of operating the Rafale in UK service.
I also hear rumors that Britain and France might co-operate on the A330 Future Tanker program, it’s a shame that we don’t co-operate more at the start of a program 😉
I still can’t see any advantage for the UK if it pulls out of the JSF program.
If it did though, I wouldn’t be totally against a Rafale M purchase as long as we get the best price possible and only get enough to equip the two carriers. A buy of 60-90 French built and minimal change Rafale M will be enough for the FAA.
The RAF should stick to land based Typhoon operations.
Interesting news, I always thought the Tornado GR4 update should have included the Blue Vixen radar from the Sea Harrier FA2 to make it a true multi-role fighter and allow the Tornado F3’s to be retired to save money.
I just hope this is a demonstration only and not a study into extending the service life of the GR4 so the government can cancel some of the Typhoon’s on order 🙁
Steve: Mate interesting refit you have there, especially the Walrus with the EJ200
😀 sorry couldn’t resist, perhaps a more realistic alternative would be a couple of Sea Harrier FA2’s on Skyhooks.
