HMS Belfast refit 😀
Replace the 6in guns with current 155mm barrels and equipment.
Replace the 4in guns with current 4.5in/114mm gun turrets.
Replace engine machinery with the T45’s RR WR-21 gas turbine/electric propulsion units (x4?).
Sea Wolf VLS on the aft deck and Phalanx or Goalkeeper CIWS too.
A Supermarine Walrus amphibian fitted with a EJ200 engine 😀

INSYS also continues to manufacture and support the retarding tails for the UK 1000lb and 540lb bombs.
I can’t find any pics or further info on their site 🙁
I’m finding it hard to get detailed info and pics of British bombs 🙁 I came across this big pic of a inert retarded 1000lb bomb in the USAF website gallery http://www.af.mil/shared/media/photodb/photos/060125-F-6911G-013.JPG

So Corax and Raven are seperate (but related) airframes 🙂 Here is another AWST article and some bigger pics http://www.aviationnow.com/avnow/news/channel_awst_story.jsp?id=news/022006p2.xml
Steve, mate thought you and anyone else here who have an interest in the LCS program might like to know, the RAN are looking into a study of these designs in an eventual aim to buying upto four of them.
Nothing has been formally announced as yet but the confidence in Austral has grown since the design was chosen by the USN for their purpose. If the USN has chosen it then it must be ok for someone like Australia to have them surely.
Good news, the GD/Austal design is my favourite but I suspect it’s more expensive than the LM design. Here are some more LCS websites and pics 🙂

What has really caught my eye is the Rafael Protector system USV. If the LCS has four of these systems whilest on deployment it could virtually run a self protection screen around it out to about four kilomenters. Incciednts like the “Cole” would never happen again and that is a comfort in any book.
I always think of the ED-209 robot out of the film Robocop when I see the Protector, I would certainly keep clear of someones warship if a Protector came alongside and said ”Please leave the area, you have 20 seconds to comply!” 😀
There are some in this thread http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=53230
But it seems that the engine has been removed once again … Why !???
Nice pics, thanks for sharing 🙂 I would guess the engine has been removed so they can paint the fuselage.
The STOVL F-35B flight control systems should make it very easy to handle during the hover, they are based on the UK’s VAAC Harrier test bed I discussed in this thread – VAAC Harrier – Easiest plane to fly ever? http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=45334
A two seater F-35(C?) was proposed for the USMC’s EA-6B replacement. Electronic attack JSF joins EA-6 replacement battle http://www.flightglobal.com/Articles/2002/04/16/146205/Electronic+attack+JSF+joins+EA-6+replacement+battle.html
I think they should mount a large turret ( maybe 30mm) on the thing, so
it can fire in a wide arc, off to the side, maybe like an AC-130. That
would be useful. Fly in, drop off the guys, and take off, able to do
covering fire while circling above.
The RMK 30 recoilless 30mm cannon seem like a good choice for the V-22, maybe mounted on the nose and tail 🙂 http://www.army-technology.com/contractors/ammunition/mauser/mauser2.html
Door mounted .50’s and laser guided 70mm rockets would probably be a cheaper option though.
Here is some more news on the tiltrotor alternative, the Heliplane http://www.flightglobal.com/Articles/2006/02/21/204828/Gyro+revival.html
Newforest, this thread would be better off in the Historic Aviation forum. Here is some Gnat info anyway 😉 http://www.thunder-and-lightnings.co.uk/gnat/index.html
Anyone has, or knows a site that has, a movie of the V-22 folding or unfolding its wings?
Here is one 🙂 http://www.airandspacemagazine.com/ASM/Mag/Supp/ON98/Osprey.html
Thanks for this Steve. It is an interesting concept and one that I do hope becomes a more familiar sight in the waters of the world
I agree, Sea Fighter and LCS seem like ideal platforms for many future roles. Their flexible hangars and modular equipment would make them excellent motherships for future unmanned mine warfare systems.
I just hope they will turn out to be as affordable as promised and that navy chiefs can accept a high/low mix of warships.
How, pray tell, can ALSR prevent you from landing?
If you just turn off the engine you will land.
If I remember correctly the ALSR system puts the Typhoon into a wings level slow climb if it appears that the pilot has lost control of a situation, so it’s a good idea to turn it off during emergency landings and when your just behind and below a tanker 😀
Is there any reason why the nose gear bay door is so big?
