By far the best war novel around would be “Total War 2006” by Simon Pearson. This book trumps ALL of Tom Clancy’s, Dale Brown’s and Stephen Coonts novels easily. Absolutely must read. This guy did his homework, and knows his stuff. No ra ra USA stuff here, that Dale and Clancy suffers from. The book comes with a very chilling and shocking ending. Heh, even the prologue will give a shock. Really an underappreciated novel.
I agree, an excellent book. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0340748567
Humphrey Hawksley’s books Dragon Strike, Dragonfire and The Third World War are very good too. http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/authors/Humphrey_Hawksley.htm

I believe that ship design it is operating from is the air capable Spruance concept.

Tornado IDS II, is the GR.4
Tornado ADV II, is the TyphoonThe Tornado made it into an interceptor…not a fighter, so forget about making it a multi-role fighter. Like other swing-wings, it’s either upgraded to a even more capable strike platform, or needs to make place for the new generation.
The Tornado IDS should have been upgraded into a Attack/Fighter (A/F) with a multi mode radar for AMRAAM type capability and a internal laser designator in place of the Laser Ranger Marked Target Seeker (LRMTS). Doing this would have saved the UK alot of money as they would not have had to operate the single role ADV anymore.
Tiornu, excellent post, thanks for sharing 🙂

Fitting the 16 inch guns of the Iowa class to a modern ship is one idea, but it takes about 200 odd crew men to man one gun turret plus the magazine and aiming etc etc.
Why not develop a nice big modern gun with mechanical ammo handling and loading with a new range of ammo from laser guided munitions through to standard shells.
Maybe they could remove a existing gun barrel and fit it into a new turret with auto loading equipment etc.
I still think it would be cheaper just to fit a whole turret as it is, into a new low cost hull. After all, there will only be a occasional need for shore bombardment operations, so its not worth spending alot of time and money on the capability.
Tornado is another european wasted opportunity where they only thought about what they wanted rather than what they needed 🙁
Nice Tornado pics here http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=41559

Its interesting to see that the F8U-3 Super Crusader, which lost to the Phantom in the USN competition, was also believed to be Mach 3 capable.
Quote- Maximum speed was never determined, as the canopy would overheat and begin turning opaque at about Mach 2.6. With acceleration still evident at that speed, test pilots felt that Mach 3.0 was attainable. http://www.aerofiles.com/_vot.html

Well could they? I’m thinking that the CdG would be a very good size of carrier for a dedicated CVT………..no need for expensive deffences……..could be diesel powered(would need a steam-generating plant for cats) ……..any thoughts?
If the US navy wanted a carrier just for training they should make it as cheap as possible.
Maybe a 30 knot capable trimaran hull, no hanger, flight deck only, 2 catapults (1 bow, 1 waist) and arrestor gear.
PILOTGHT, is that a French Horizon class? you forgot to tell us in your post.
