It’s a spit that has been recovered and returned to flight……..

Just so happens that my Mum lives in Dawlish…… 😀
No i didn’t know that, unfortunately me or my grandfather don’t have that book, i think he has the original Lancaster At War book. Anyway will raid the bookshelf some point next week and see what he’s got. Thanks for the heads up!! 😀
My Grandfather landed at Woodbridge on June 6th 44 (D-Day) after an operation to Argentan, the aircraft was hit by flak and returned on 3 engines. The starboard tyre burst when they landed and the aircraft ended up ground looping. They were in Lancaster DV277 “W” which i found a picture of not so long ago, its not from the actual landing at Woodbridge though.

It will also turn the facility into what it was originally designed for, which is a restoration and maintenance facility that will be needed to build future attraction elements.
Could be good news for the Lanc that’s been sat in the shipping container all these years……
A very busy time!! Out of interest who’s log book is the extract from? I’d guess its the squadron OC’s Teddy Donaldson.
151 Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Hugh Ironside got splinters in his eyes during combat on 09.07.40 as mentioned at the bottom of the log book. Amazing what you can find on Google!
Could of been from the AEF (Air Experience Flight) that was based at RAF Kinloss as i mentioned in my post #49, although the date seems a year or two earlier than i thought. We were on camp at RAF Lossiemouth and Kinloss was having its runways relayed so we had to go to Inverness to do our flying. Remember been flown by an Air Commodore who was an ex Jaguar pilot over some fantastic scenery which involved a buzz by a Nimrod that was operating in the same area! 😎 Will try and dig out the dates from my memory……
Bloody hell! Got your moneys worth there! Very impressive!
All these ex cadets in this thread and there has been no mention of “jump jump John”……. very disappointed! Anyway wish i could find my old 3822, never flew in a chippie but have numerous flights in Bulldogs, Vigilants and Tutors. Also got a flight in a Nimrod (XV241 if a remember correct) while on camp at Kinloss, I have flown out of RAF Woodvale, RAF Brize Norton, RAF Kinloss and also Inverness when Kinloss was having its runways dug up. I flew in the Vigilant many times doing my gliding scholarship from Salmesbury but didn’t actually do any power off gliding…..
No problem, I just did a quick search and i posted copies of my grandfathers log book on a thread you started about RAF air gunners. Just had another look through the copies and his first trip on sugar was classed as a special exercise that lasted 3 hours 15, his first offical operation was again in sugar and to the Cherbourg area.
No, it looks like Stan was on the squadron sometime earlier than my grandad, he flew his first op on the 23.05.44 which just happened to be on “sugar”.
Shame PO-S isn’t on the list, would of being nice to go sit in my grandad’s old office at the back…….
Bit of oil and it’ll soon be up and running!! 🙂 Makes me wonder what they have dredged up from doing the new Thames Gateway development much closer to home……
