OK thanks Steve, will do. Hopefully the weather will be a little kinder today.!! We are on our way.

Thanks Charlie. Sometimes it is best not to go back to places in your past. in this case, however, you will not be disappointed.

Indeed Sidslip. We have been trapped in N Wales for thirty years and this year we are like naughty children in a sweet shop. As you say the living, breathing machine is so different from the static display.

We have seen static Doves which usually look a little forlorn but at Coventry she looks so beautiful working hard to help towards her keep.

Yes an Old Warden air show is now on our list for next year.

Oh Charlie!!! I absolutely hate that fruit!!! 😀 I let my son talk me into an eye phone which was a bad decision for me. I am now safely back with the little robot and away from the ultimate in control freaks and style over function. Both my children thought the same and are now also with the little robot too. I have a “larger” battery installed with a bulge back on the phone and this usually lasts all day with heavy use.

moggy I’ve solved the smart phone battery problem. Mounted a small generator on a trolley with cover over all and a draw bar. Painted drab olive with a couple of plates with type numbers on and broad arrows and stencilled GUINAULT on the side. Long extension lead so I cannot hear it and we are in business. Brew a cup of tea as well.

If by digital you mean that you can enter and it displays the frequencies then yes. I always find it useful to download the manual and browse through all the features. Also some seller’s websites have guides on what to consider when buying a scanner.

What would it achieve? Absolutely nothing. A bit like all air displays they do not achieve anything from crazy flying at Hendon to Cosford they never have, although possibly in the past they promoted flying.

As for the Vulcan, to go out as she came in?

Just had to check I was not on the OK magazine forum.:D

I haven’t a clue who all these people you discussing are but then I do not watch much TV. Even so I do know how to use the basic functions such as mute, something sadly not available for air show commentaries.

Raymond Baxter dead!!!! OMG I wondered why I hadn’t seen him recently.:D

Are my posts really that difficult to understand? That’s retorical by the way.
Do we no longer have any technical commentators of his calibre?

You watch Top Gear Moggy, now you have gone down in my eyes. :D8

And of course they are particularly useful if there is no proper commentary or you are in a location away from the airfield, and I mean like Beachy Head not a naughty field.:D

We may whinge a lot but the experts here does mean we do get our facts right. I haven’t seen any of the media coverage as I was fortunate enough to be near Duxford but I can imagine. Without meaning to bang on it does seem from the reports that commentators like the sound of their own voice and feel the need to keep talking to cater for any people with a low attention span. Technical commentators do not seem to have the knowledge like say Raymond Baxtor had, or is that just looking back through rose tinted goggles?

I went for the Uniden UBC125XLT for my first scanner this year.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/SCANNER-UNIDEN-UBC125XLT-Price-Square/dp/B00HQCUXI4

I chose this from reading review and advice on websites to include a full set of keys and a large display. USB port for updates and pre-programming. Rechargeable batteries. And a number of useful operating facilities like close call. Detachable BNC aerial and headphone socket. It comes with the batteries and charger. Charging takes place with the batteries installed.

Do allow plenty of time to read the manual and play with it, it took me some time to understand some of the facilities and then as I only used it at air shows needed to brush up again each time.

I cannot compare with other models but I have been happy with it. You will need a second set of batteries if in use all day.

I do find it useful to find out what’s happening next, or what has gone wrong etc, directions of approach and sometimes the odd amusing quip from pilots.

Suggest taking it to a GA airfield at weekend where you can easily see registrations and get to understand the various procedures. DX is good for this as it also has plenty of GA especially on show days.
Also at DX on non show days it gives you more warning than the PA of something interesting making a pass. The PA seems to leave it far too late and you have no chance of getting out of a hanger or the café:D

    Hope this will help.

    Thanks suthg, much appreciated.

David, really not sure exactly what he was expecting at Coventry it is a difficult site for an air show. I don’t think it is now reasonable to expect anything that isn’t in the manual whatever we might want to see. I don’t think we are going to see that 360 roll on the last day we were all secretly hoping for, however unrealistically. 😀
