Very nice set, many thanks for posting.
Ah Green Line another nostalgic name.
I have been in Bromley/Biggin Hill area for several weeks and have not seen or heard anything of this. There was a large car show on the 8th of June and saw plenty of advertising for that about. It does appear on participants’ appearance lists. Does anybody know anywhere this was advertised other than on the bhfof site and Global? The Sevenoaks Chronicle had a piece on the 6th. I could have easily gone had I known about it. Used to go to what I think was the RAF Battle of Britain Days back in the late 50’s early sixties. Then nearly went in 2010 but didn’t make it and that, of course, was the last show.
Interesting flying display slots arrangement going through to 19:20. Gates open 12:00.
Maybe it is better to retain the memories of those air shows when things were a bit more, er, memorable!
Sorry should have realised, 3 page spread on Broussard MH.1521. Bit of a coincidence that you should post at this time.

I do not know how much it costs to put on any event. I do know, however, that at £27.50 on the day this would seem to me to be extremely good value for money when compared with other forms of paid entertainment. Alton Towers day ticket for over 12s £48. Whether you personally can afford it applies to all activities. Assuming that a profit is made then presumably this in some way goes towards the planes not into someone’s pocket.
Personally I even feel uncomfortable paying the reduced senior price when available or using the buy one get one free vouchers at museums, I did that once and ended up donating the second entrance to fund the good work. Of course, I am fortunate in being able to do so, others may not.
Veterans are, of course, another issue and possibly could be handled by applications made directly and in advance and funded by an increase in the entrance fee. Should we also be offering concessions to service people on production of ID again funded by increase in standard admission? Remember, however “right” this respect to members of our armed forces, past and present, is, it does have to be funded.
Is the Title Register together with any covenants not viewable for a small fee at the Land Registry?
Were there no conditions attached to the £1 sale, like keeping it as an airfield?
It will be all right as long as nobody mentions the war.
I remember my Dad reading a Thomas The Tank Engine story to me as a child and throwing the book in the bin in disgust. It was Henry The Green Engine, the story of Henry’s Sneeze, where the good Reverend Awdry tells of clag being blown from the smoke box at a gaggle of miscreant stone throwers on the bridge and leaving them …‘as black as niggers’ . This has been changed now, to match modern patterns of language. This is the way of things, even if it distorts history.
Looking back now, that was more than likely a first edition that he dingied. Damn you, Father!
Are we not looking at two different things here? Modern day usage and historic representation. I would agree that it is unacceptable today to call your dog nigger, have a Black and White Minstrel show, use the word nigger in a book published now entitled 10 Little Niggers (or though I wonder why Indians was considered acceptable as well!) or to include text to mean a soot covered child, or produce Golliwog soft toys or badges. However, the film is recreating a factual event and at that time Nigger was a common name for black pets and I therefore assume it was not directly meant as a derogatory statement.
I have to admit that I was very wrong about the origin of the word so if nothing else this thread has made me look this up. According to the OD, for use in English anyway, it would appear to have always been used in a derogatory sense. Please correct me if I have this wrong!

If the word has always been derogatory then this makes me wonder why it was common to call black pets Nigger.

I grew up collecting Golliwog badges and using expressions like “Nigger in the wood pile” and watching The Black and White Minstrel Show without putting or realising that there was any derogatory context. In contrast I was very aware that the Coon jokes doing the rounds in the 60’s were offensive.
Whether the naming of the dog and the use of the code word had any racist connotation at the time is still not clear to me, however, either way the correct words should always be used if for no other reason it shows how things were at the time, and that is the most important thing.
Having watched a few American programs where words that they might object to are bleeped out why not just bleep out the so called offensive words for their consumption and let everybody else who is not so sensitive enjoy the film and the full soundtrack for what it is.
This or Trumper’s suggestion get my vote. Surely this is easy to do, none controversial and historically accurate for those who want it.
Journey Into Space was on the Light Programme .
Did you know it was David Jacobs who did the echoing voice intro? ….(plus some of the other voices, Lenny?)
Yes thanks for the correction which highlights the dangers of assumption. Lenny was first David Kossoff and later Alfie Bass, “Bootsie”. Only knew about Jacobs as Radio 4 Extra have had some programmes about the series, I think;)

Thanks for the correction, Charlie, at least I didn’t say the Home radio which is what it was of course when Journey was first broadcast. I did mean Radio 4Extra, Radio 7 as was and pre-set 5 on my radios!! I have corrected my post.
“If they are worried about that I wonder what else will concern their PC sensitivities.” … and is that not the important point? Will it be a straight forward portrayal of how it was seen at the time or as is becoming fashionable now questioning the cost, in life, and whether the raid was worthwhile? This is certainly not a camp I fall into, however, those seeking the publicity brought about by such a view point may well think this is the most financially sound way to go.
Journey into Space… In my case behind the settee on occasions! Are we showing our age here? Journey is repeating on Radio 4 Extra without that effect on me! Do the younger generation listen to Radios 4 and 4 Extra? I know my “children”, late 20’s, do not nor any of their friends.
What is it we see, forumites, in the 1955 film? Is it in our case the site of original equipment and locations together with iconic characters from real life in our field of interest and a truly epic storey? What are today’s cinema goers going to want from a remake? An accurate portrayal or just an action movie? Are we going to be as happy with 100% CGI and mock ups, as good as they are?
The radio series is excellent with a much larger remit than the film, certainly a “must listen” in my view. Surely both excellent in their own way.
