after all it is only a name.
Isn’t that the point, it is only a name and the name was….
Recently watched the 1955 film again and was very impressed how it had withstood the test of time. I truly hope that any new film does justice to the subject as I feel the original does even with any inaccuracies. I would hate to see the new film over “commercialised” for today’s “market”, but then again I suppose that may be the only way it will get made today.
Easy way to create PDF from Word documents. Once you have created/opened your Word document in Word select “SAVE AS” from the “FILE” menu. In the window that opens there is a box labelled “SAVE AS TYPE” use the drop down arrow to see a list of file types. Select “PDF” then hit “SAVE” and the file will be saved as a PDF. Has always worked well for me but not sure how it would handle any heavy formatting or embedded items.
Great to hear that you have hopefully solved the priming pump and were rewarded with a very well earned successful 4 engine run, congratulations.

A schematic would surely help. If one is not to hand maybe a separate post on the forum might yield results.
Is it the case that any pressure relief device would need a pipe connection returning fuel to the tank? If the device is integral to the pump would this mean that there would therefore be three pipe connections to the pump which should be fairly obvious. From what Bruce is saying this isn’t the case, for his pump, so presumably a separate location for the pressure relief valve which may not be so obvious. As cypherus says in his excellent post the purpose of the composite gear within the gearbox is likely to be as a safety device as noise reduction would hardly seem applicable in this application.
I have some photos but for some reason cannot upload any photos.
Had same problem but successful when both image and file size reduced. Success with image width of 1000 pixels and file size was just below 500KB. Think it is all explained “somewhere” in the stickies.
BBC report on inquest
I remember the Carrier Bantam runway control caravan with the big greenhouse on the back at Valley. Don’t know if they still use runway caravans these days.
Yes they do at Valley June 2013. I believe it is based on an Iveco truck. Can somebody please confirm what these are called and a date?
Very sorry to see this problem persisting and spoiling the proposed 4 engine run up.
Just a couple of thoughts which you have probably had already.
Does the Lancaster have a similar system? If so maybe the engineers running these four aircraft might be able to throw some light onto this problem.
If the pressure relief is built into the pump and you have changed the pump several times it would seem likely that the problem is another part of the system, however,if all the gears are of a similar age then they could all be suffering from the same problem. Which would bring us back to the Lancs again and their experience and age of pumps, assuming they are similar that is.
Found the pictures you posted of the brake overhaul very interesting and would be interested in seeing the disassembled pump and offending gear arrangement.
The image here shows more clearly how the guns articulate, scroll right down it is the last image, although the rest is very interesting as well.

No doubt Rich will let us know why WR963 looks a little different.
Rich, no doubt like many others I watch this thread with great interest, thanks for all the updates they are much appreciated.
A nice colour picture of the Active has been posted in post #7 here

Hi LEHAVRE,
Great colour pic of the Active. I was seeking info on this Active a while back.

The red and white check scheme with the narrow red back we concluded was after 1963 and before 1977. At this time the aircraft was operated by the Tiger Club which was based at Rochester. The picture at Lydd was felt to be April 1969.
The present owners, The Real Aeroplane Company, may well be interested in a copy of your picture!
– so if the money was found to do a good job of recovering, conserving and displaying the remains of the P38 – would you still say don’t do it?
Do you have the right to?In the UK, you may (or may not) have noticed that we are hardly over burdened by P38s in museums – despite their contribution to UK based war effort.

A lot to agree with, the only proviso regarding the last section being that no alternative better solution was forthcoming.
it shows value of manufacturing output in the UK since just after WWII.
Isn’t the key word here “value”. But how does this relate to numbers employed, quantity produced and apprentices in training? Surely the decline referred to is that perceived from when this tiny island produced much of the engineering for the world. Is it not that the UK produces less but at a higher value using fewer people? (For clarity that’s a question not a statement.) The program the other night about Rolls Royce was very interesting and heartening not only designing here but also building here and apparently competing in the world market. They clearly see the need for an apprenticeship scheme to meet their future needs for a skilled workforce. However, they too very nearly went to the wall and if that had been allowed to happen they couldn’t now be held up as an example of a great British company.
