I never like to think of myself as anything religious at all. I dont care for the many labels society gives those without religion in their lives. Why does everything have to have a label? Why cant it simply not just exist in its own little world?
Anyhow I am not religious in the slightest and am certainly not christian. I do however believe I have christian values as well as my own set of beliefs on how I like to treat others and be treated.
I also have many stories of homeless and charity cases having lived and worked around Edinburgh for all my years.
Bumblebee I believe you acted correctly and should you meet the young man again (who is my age and I often think if I had stayed in the army this could have been me.) that you should do exactly the same again and help him. However if you never see him again put him out of you mind and think of him no more. You did something good and whether he was out to fleece you is neither here nor there as he didnt con you in any way in the end. He either was as genuine, distressed and suffering as you thought he was or he thought better of stealing from such a kind person. Either way you will have your reward in heaven.
I remember several times in Edinburgh but here are a few of my favorites.
The girl who was begging for money on Lothian Road who was wearing a brand new pair of Armani jeans Nike trainers which were £120 at the time and a mobile phone. She also had a bunch of other stuff hidden in her backpack which all lay under her dirty old blanket. Needless to say I didnt give her any money.
The old guy and his buddies who asked if I had any change and I said no but they could have this bottle of coca-cola I had just bought. I had only bought the bottle of coke so I could get change for the phone. So no he couldnt get my change. Imagine my surprise when he took the bottle but when I looked back I saw him putting it in the bin. I laughed as I knew they were the real homeless wino’s.
Then there are the hundreds of other beggars you see on the street. All of whom I never give money to. My future mother in law is far too kind and gives them something in Edinburgh whenever she sees them. Something I dont agree with but if I can help in other ways then at some point in my life I will. I always do talk to them though if they ask if I have any spare change I always reply to them I never just walk past and ignore them. The genuine beggars usually always say thank you but the con artist normally say nothing or just give abuse under their breath.
It is hard to tell if someone is genuine or not so I always take a cautious approach. I am just like that and I have more problems financially than they ever will have. So maybe once I have sorted my life out I can dedicate more time to helping them.
My heart goes out to everyone of the genuine homeless and I couldnt care less about the wasters and thieves.
Just my opinion.
Direct and to the point. Thanks for that.
So the question is will this be refurbished and restored or will it be a write off.
This is a slightly different case than the usual recovery and restoration stories.
Warbird is in itself a broad term. An se5a or Camel as well as Spitfires, Mustangs and then of course we have the Vulcan, Jaguars and Tornadoes oh as well as Bucaneers. These are all what could be classed as a warbird. Lets do what we do best and let everyone call them what they like. No need for new names for anything.
Oh and one last thing.
“Dont mention the war”
Actually, they dont – they set the rules by which aircraft can be allowed to fly, and as we have seen, sometimes that will make operation of a particular aircraft prohibitively expensive.
Welcome back by the way.
Bruce
Fair enough Bruce I see what you are saying. Maybe I worded my post wrong then.
Expense can be overcome if you are able and willing enough but sadly this does limit the amount of people able to do this. Lets face it if I was operating an aircraft and it could either be one expensive jet or have a couple of vintage classics I know what I would do. Or even maybe even have a jet but because its more cost effective I can still operate my Tiger Moth etc.
And thanks its nice to be back albeit in a smaller capacity.
I find it rather sad and pathetic to see that this thread has gone from an informational thread about the demise of a prestigious and brave company to one that slates their maintainence record and become a thread that merely bitches and moans about which aircraft should be flying and which should not.
The fact of the matter is that they are closed and we will all know in due time what is going to happen to the aircraft. Who even says they will be sold. The commercial operation is closed but there is nothing saying the aircraft wont be kept privately or in a local museum so put that one in your pipe and smoke it.
As for spits and hurris being slow and not complexed. You ever seen the mess one makes when it ploughs into the ground?
All aircraft are complexed and I for one applaud the CAA for taking the informed decision of which aircraft can be allowed to fly. In saying that I dont need to agree with the choices or decisions they make but I dont envy them their job in making these choices.
Its always going to be the wrong decision for someone.
Lets just enjoy whatever someone manages to get flying or keep flying.
As for accidents they are going to happen come whatever may. Some are preventable some are not lets just learn as much as we can from them.
This thread reminds me of quite a few of the reasons I hardly ever post here anymore.
Thats a bit of a ******. This excavation is very very close to where I live I mean like a matter of a 10 maybe 20 minute walk depending on how fit I feel. 2-3mins in the car and I cant believe I didnt know anything about this. Talk about lost oppotunities.
Have contacted the poster by email explaining my situation and am hoping to receive some info from him.
Just interesting to see if they found much having done a few site near edinburgh myself.
Just wondering if his digger chum mentioned in his post has a licence to recover the items from a crash site. Clearly they know it is from an aircraft and without said licence are commiting an offence. Not one for really complaining about this too much but I dont like it when detectorist go on about their site. Its not surely its the nations.
No nappy changing tho’…….:D
Except maybe his own occasionally. lol.
Nice car love American V8’s

In my opinion and thats all it is.
An artefact, such as a bent rod and piston or even a staright one for that matter, can be put away on a shelf and as long as it is preserved and kept clen and dry can be left for as long as you want it to be on a shelf. However an item which could be flown again having passed all tests on it suitability to fly should be given more due care and attention because if it is handled in the wrong manner it can cost someone their life.
Just my thoughts.
Both items have worth and are deserving of care and attention its just some need more.
How do I post a link? When I try it just defaults back to the start and not the image I am looking at. Thinking I may have to do a screen capture unless one of you can tell me how. I have quite a few areas of interest and could easily have a quiz or 2 for starters.
Anyone interested?

I love the quote by the 15 year old.
“I heard a crash and looked down and it was a plane on its roof. It was really low – I was a bit nervous.”
Your bloody right it was low. lol. it was on the ground.
Inverted flight should not be tried at zero feet as sudden deceleration sometimes result in the crashing of ones aircraft.
Glad to hear everyone got out safe.
“Jeez, do you people know nothing?”
And don’t forget the London bus. They’ll need some means to get around.

Hey Kev
That was around the same week in the paper that the Freddie Starr ate my hamster story appeared.
That paper was great for some of the headlines it pulled.
