Andy, no flies on you mate. Indeed that is the ID of this Spit.

If you have been naming parts then that would be my mate. We both have quite a few parts in our flats and quite a lot more in a yard we have use of.

For the rest of you this one is Spitfire Vb AR403 65 Squadron.

Again thanks to you all as without you I wouldnt have a clue what half these parts are. I love what we do regards the history, research and the final recovery or not as the case may be. I ca generalise what parts may or may not be but because I dont know each aircraft inside out thats where you lot come in. Thanks once more.

I will try and upload more tonight.

Keep an eye of for it.

Thanks to all that replied so far.

A few good ids so far. Most intresting as I would never have known half of it without help.

The mystery black round item could well be one of the 2 things you mentioned so far. Is it possible its part of a bottle? Were bottles fabricated in this way or are they usually all welded seams.

I will post more when I can. I was at our store today and got a few more parts to clean and photgraph.

The hinged lid is the remnants of the IFF destruct button assembly.

The first item is one of the balance weights from the DH bracket-type prop assembly.

The throttle lever is, to me, quite interesting and shows clearly that the wooden handle was painted white and marked ‘Throttle’. There was recently some debate about this in certain quarters!

We have the main face of the IFF which still clearly shows the red segment.
How would these units destruct?

Glad to know what the weight is now. All sorts had been suggested from something to do with machine guns to fuel none of which tied in that well. Interestingly we have 2 of these and only 2 prop blades survived the crash.

What was the debate about the throttle. I would have thought there would be several different ways of doing it depending on the mark and location of the spit. I am sure our spitfire shows at least 2 types of interior paint.

Thanks Ian,

I am guessing the slider is the brass looking part and the catch is the shiny part. Although there is no working parts on it and it looks more like a stopper than a catch.

The brake pressure part. Would this have the 3 needled affair as the gauge face? If so I have this also pretty smashed up but with 2 needles still attached.

My most amazing find was finding that there was an airbase left at all to find.

At Drem my mate told me of a WAAF toilet door that was still on the base. I have since seen said door and have a photo somewhere. And how do we know it was the WAAF’s toilet door? Well the faint lettering on it read “WAAFS ONLY”. It was last seen being used as a fence in a small holding that is now in the site. The toilet block being used as a garden shed.

More lucid today and still banging on about getting a couple of rabbits (he used to breed and show rabbits in his youth).

It is said that the older we get the more we return to memories of youth. I know this is especially true in cases of dementia having seen my grandad go through the same thing.

My thoughts are with you all Kev. Hoping for all the best for all of you.

I dont suppose this comes in the same category as your but the thing that made me mad yesterday didnt even happen to me but something that was observed on the news online and is rather shocking and sad too.

A young 16 year old girls body was found in a back alley of Blackpool near the south pier area of the town. While that is bad enough she was found burning.

Bad enough that they (whoever that may be at this point) killed her but to set her on fire too. What is this world coming to. I just dont know anymmore.

I want to help end things like this. I would like to help tortured children and adults the best I could. I would like to end poverty of our citizens and a whole range of other things too.

I feel helpless. What can I do. Or do I leave all this to the usless lot that are in power just now. Given the powers to do something about it could I run the country any better? Probably not as your hands are tied by all the rules and regulations.

Hanging is too good for some folks.

The world is a deeply disturbed place. Not that I ever thought otherwise but sometimes things just hit a chord with you and it annoys you beyond belief.

Was he flying alone that night or was someone else flying with him?

I have neither of these books so havent seen any of the information you have posted.

Thanks once again the information is fantastic.

I think one day soon I might go take a look at the crash site to get his perspective on how he thought he was at Drem and in actual fact was at East Fortune. I suppose an easy mistake to make at night. Although the 2 airfield are very different in construction.
