A sad sight for which to make my first post! I think it is the combination of B/W, weeds growing, and the photo taken from the rear, with the aircraft facing away. Whatever it is, it is a very evocative picture.
Looking around there are some wonderful photos in these forums – both old and new. What a treat!
I can only add that although she flew on Saturday at Biggin Hill, she failed to materialise on Sunday. And two members of my party were only there to see the Vulcan.
OK, Hurn. I was merely making an observation as an ardent fan, but a disappointed one. I wasn’t being critical, so don’t jump down my throat. Safety must be a crucial factor and if the aircraft is not safe to fly it must not be flown. That’s obvious.
And until arriving new to Key and reading the 89 pages of posts I had no idea that the Vulcan could arouse such passion. And I can also see why the huge sums of money already spent and potentially huge sums still to be spent to keep her in the air might be difficult to justify, however much we would like to see her this display season.
That’s a terrific website, curlyboy – many thanks. Talk about whetting the appetite. And I will take your advice and see how we both get on.:)
Definitely sounds like two bites of the cherry. I don’t he’ll forgive me if we miss the BoB Hangar, though.
Will do – sounds like good advice.:)
I remember it. It was my first “serious” magazine as a youngster, passionate about aircraft. Later on it was Flight and the original Aeroplane.
Is there a bus service??
Thanks very much, chaps, for all this info. I know we will have a great day there and only wish it was nearer so that it could become “our place” as well.:)
am I the only one that will be totally gutted to never see her fly again?
I just think she needs a new management team…
No, you are not. I will, so will certain members of my family. But, I am already resigned to the fact that she probably won’t fly for her 50th Anniversary.
I have the impression from all the knowledge in this thread that perhaps it’s too late for a new team to achieve anything in the time available. Come on all you billionaires – show us the colour of your money!:D
Interesting – never realised they were built by companies other than construction firms. And I was growing up during those dates. Did the home builders of the day also construct them or were they specifically made by firms like those you mentioned to keep the workforces employed?
Haven’t read it yet but there is a long article in this month’s Aeroplane about the history of Bristol, its aircraft and its engines.
Is the US still selling off stuff at Molesworth which came back from Germany as well as from closed UK bases?
I got plastered with some mates in a club in Sunderland and fell off the balcony onto the stage where Hylda Baker was in full flow with “Cynthia”. Needless to say we were all ejected ( not Hylda and Cynthia ) and I remember little of it except the severe bruising!
Incredible. Go to the Key Forums and you are sure to find memories jolted. I recall this incident so clearly and always had the thought that just tens of feet lower and he would not have been so incredibly lucky to escape with serious but not terminal injuries. I didn’t know he had resumed his flying career.
