Bit like climbing Everest in 1920s gear. Why should modern pilots be less than as safe and as comfortable as possible when flying these beautiful old aircraft for our pleasure?

I share in the confusion, to some extent. It is unclear why flying was suddenly resumed last time when there was no substantial difference in the pattern of the ash dispersion in that period of an hour during which it was decided to resume flying, allowing the in-bound BA flights to land at LHR.

There seems to have been confusion, obfuscation and not a little communication breakdown last time. Let us hope the problem is better dealt with this time.

Indeed, and I don’t think that interviewees in this type of documentary programme are paid a fee anyway. If they are asked to be interviewed somewhere to suit the production company I have no doubt that their out of pocket expenses are reimbursed.

One or more of the parties begging for our votes will scrap this iniquitous requirement. Although how they can do so, since it is required under EU legislation, I am not sure.

Well I suppose he is only repeating the same mistake our “esteemed” Meteorological Office makes.;)

Ah, yes – that really will provoke them!:D I like your way of dealing with it – reminiscent of my reaction to yet another telling off from my mother years ago….

Just a thought. Would the exterior varnishes you can buy for yacht and fence protection be any good? Perhaps they would not work on plastic………

I was hoping they could have used expenses scandal MPs as live subjects in the shelter, for greater realism.

Yup. Last week it had been knocked over and half the milk was spilt out and Tony R righted it in the same position. This week it was unaffected by the scaled down V1 explosion.

It was a bit of a cheat, although an unavoidable one, I suppose. There are restrictions on the volume of sound which can be produced on the range and affect local dwellings. The calculation of the sound footprint based on wind direction and velocity on the day prohibited an explosion simulating the V1, so the amount of explosive was scaled down and the charge placed nearer the street to produce, theoretically the equivalent blast. I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to be there and the occupants of the Anderson Shelter would not have survived.

But it is the moving voices of recollection from the time which are really affecting and, to my mind, successfully balance the slightly gung-ho team at Blitz Street.

spitfireman/wingcommandrflap – I think you both behaved with more courtesy and patience than this “trespasser” deserved. People like that are not worth wasting your valuable breath on and had I been there I might not have displayed such equanimity towards this ignorant fool.
