Just been informed that apparently a spitfire was being transported through Bedford (Bedfordshire) South along the High Street,on a flat-bed lorry with the wings on a trailer behind, around lunchtime today.
Anyone know what aircraft this is, where it came from, where it’s going????
When things like this go missing, sorry but who else do you know that would stoop so low as to thieving something like this? Perhaps an apology is in order to some other posters…
I personally don’t know anyone who would do such a thing. However, if you look in the papers, or watch the News, you will find there are thieves in every walk of life and every class of society!
It’s both unfair and dangerous to point an accusing finger at one particular section of society without a single shred of evidence.
I fear for this Country and its legal system if the attitude displayed by most of the posters on this thread should pervade the jury room. 🙁
Whoah!!!!
Yes, the theft of this and any other memorial is just plain immoral. I have read this thread thoroughly, yet have not come cross any proof as to who was responsible.
It appears that unfounded accusations have been made and a witch-hunt is taking place. This is sad to see in a country wher one is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty beyond all reasonable doubt.
Previous posters on this thread seem to be fast forming a virtual lynch-mob, . . very scary, especially on what has up until now been a respectable forum and one that has always strived to maintain its dignity.
Shame on us 🙁
VC 10 flying Southwest over Silsoe in Bedfordshire last Sunday (11th Apr) around midday. Beautifully silhouetted against the blue sky.
Another amazing tale
Charlie Brown’s story
Charlie Brown was a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot with the 379th Bomber Group at Kimbolton, England. His B-17 was called ‘Ye Old Pub’ and was in a terrible state, having been hit by flak and fighters. The compass was damaged and they were flying deeper over enemy territory instead of heading home to Kimbolton.
After flying over an enemy airfield, a pilot called Franz Steigler was ordered to take off and shoot down the B-17. When he got near the B-17, he could not believe his eyes. In his words, he ‘had never seen a plane in such a bad state’. The tail and rear section was severely damaged, and the tail gunner wounded. The top gunner was all over the top of the fuselage. The nose was smashed and there were holes everywhere.
Despite having ammunition, Franz flew to the side of the B-17 and looked at Charlie Brown, the pilot. Brown was scared and struggling to control his damaged and blood-stained plane.
Aware that they had no idea where they were going, Franz waved at Charlie to turn 180 degrees. Franz escorted and guided the stricken plane to and slightly over the North Sea towards England. He then saluted Charlie Brown and turned away, back to Europe.
When Franz landed he told the c/o that the plane had been shot down over the sea, and never told the truth to anybody. Charlie Brown and the remains of his crew told all at their briefing, but were ordered never to talk about it.
More than 40 years later, Charlie Brown wanted to find the Luftwaffe pilot who saved the crew. After years of research, Franz was found. He had never talked about the incident, not even at post-war reunions.
They met in the USA at a 379th Bomber Group reunion, together with 25 people who are alive now – all because Franz never fired his guns.
Would seem quite rare and yours for a Grand.
Sorry if already listed.
Useful if rebuilding a Merlin?
Just get yourself one of these . . .
Just get yourself one of these . . .
There was an original 306th BG history presented to the town when the 306th left and Squadron diaries.
Which particular library?
When would this have been?
I don’t recall ever seeing those at the Bedford Central Library but do remember seeing a photocopied version of the attached (about 15yrs ago), at the County Library which used to be at County Hall, along with a few photocopied combat reports from the 306th’s first combat mission.
Are these what you mean?
Here’s a sad/frightening thought.
My Grandaughter (She’s only three now), I’m sure, will be of the generation that will witness the removal of all the WWI & WWII war memorials from every City, Town & Village etc, because it will be deemed (by European Parliament) as ‘no longer relevant’ or ‘politically correct’ (maybe even embarrasing) to be reminded that so many lives were lost, whilst at war with our ‘European Brothers’
I’m convinced that this will happen. Especially when the last immediate family of the veterans (Grandchildren) have also passed on and there will be no-one left who remembers or cares anymore.
What do you think?
I personally hope that I will be long gone before this ocurrs.
Yes :mad:and all the 306th BG books have disappeared from the Bedford Library .
Which books are you refering to?
Any idea roughly when they went missing?
Thanks for the input chaps, much appreciated.
I recall seeing the copy in Kimbolton Church (in a small glass case?) some years ago. I do hope that no-one could stoop so low as to steal, what would amount to a memorial, from a church.:(:(:(
