he’s not just any tiny little man – he’s a Leprechaun – it is an ex Irish Air Force Spitfire after all
Methinks no Leprechaun, but maybe the worlds first authentic photo of a real Gremlin, (making fast his escape) ๐
How I hate seeing this sort of title to a thread.
Why?
And now it’s not just our wartime pilots who are leaving us, but the jet-age pioneers too.
Combat is combat, whatever the conflict.
The caption under the first photo in the article reads:
“Restored: The Spitfire flies above the Biggin Hill airbase having been rebuilt four decades after it crashed”
Whatever happened to accuracy?
Coronation Day 2nd June 1954: 144 Meteors lead by Duxford Wing (64 & 65 Squadrons) 24 Sabres of RCAF5:30pm over Southend Pier
Queens Coronation was 1953 surely!
Sweet!!!!:D
Fly free Sir. . . .
Vive la France!
Currently reading this thread again ๐
Although not an ‘Air Force’ poem in its strictest sense, this poem will, however, always be synonymous with RAF Tempsford and its close association with Voilette Szabo and S.O.E.
The life that I have
Is all that I have
And the life that I have
Is yours
The love that I have
Of the life that I have
Is yours and yours and yours
A sleep I shall have
A rest I shall have
Yet death will be but a pause
For the peace of my years
In the long green grass
Will be yours and yours
and yours
OK, thanks for the explanation, very much appreciated.
IMHO XS458 is one of the last remaining, shining examples of this countries engineering at it’s finest.
Long may her engines roar. As long as she breathes, the boy in me will never die.

Please excuse my ignorance, but why ‘the last ever’?

Does anybody know Millerโs movements before the fateful flight? I seem to recall that he and his manager (?) had lunch in a pub before the flight; Twinwoods Farm is only a few miles from here and I wondered if it was any of the local pubs.
I’m led to believe that ‘The Queens Head’ (still existing) in Milton Ernest was a regular drinking place for Glen Miller etc whist they were billeted at Milton Ernest Hall.
Yes, I know, but I was wondering what US Army Air Force aircraft would be flying out of Twinwoods Farm in 2011? ๐
Of course it doesnโt have to take-off from there. ๐
How can an aircrafr ‘fly out’ of somewhere without ‘taking off’ from there??
Gonna have to be a helicopter or Airship owing to a lack of runway.
I’m a bit confused.
